[00:03:43] Kenny Thunder: Do that.
[00:03:44] Ronnie Jams: All right, Kenny, the moment you've been waiting for. It's the week three pre or week. Oh, it's preview week three recap.
[00:03:50] Kenny Thunder: Going back to the preview.
[00:03:51] Ronnie Jams: Yeah, it didn't seem real. So we got to start this over.
Yeah. So the Browns win, obviously.
Do you have is as mixed feelings about this one as we did last week?
[00:04:07] Kenny Thunder: I mean, it's. It's not as enjoyable as it could be. If this were headed towards something, I'll say that. Look, credit Todd Monken and this coaching staff.
There were. There was week to week improvement from week one to week two to week two to week three.
This team is getting better. There's a lot of things to be excited about.
I don't know that DeShawn played his best game this week. I think he was genuinely kind of bad for most of the game outside of the two touchdown throws.
[00:04:38] Ronnie Jams: And I was. I was there, so I'll have insight on this.
Just more to talk about this.
[00:04:43] Kenny Thunder: He put three balls in harm's way. One was picked off but called back on a penalty for roughing the passer, which was kind of a toss up, roughing the passer play. I think he sold it more than anything that kind of got the call. So, you know, good for him. But.
But I think if you had three picks on the day, no one is walking away from today feeling like this was a good game for him. But that being said, he got the. He got the dub, got the job done. So, you know, for the most part, outside of the balls that were in the hands of defenders, he played mistake free football. Didn't really put it on the ground.
And it was good enough to win. Right. Which again, like the long history of the Browns has always been, hey, we feel like we have talent on this team. We've got a decent enough defense and enough pieces around that we could win some football games if we just had very mediocre quarterback play. And we've had such poor or quarterback back play for so long that, you know, desean Watson playing very, very average football is enough to win games right now, which is good. Right. Winning is better than losing. So I'm not sad that we won by any. By any stretch. It's just, you know, at some point you're going, what's, what's the, what's the end game here? Because I still have two young quarterbacks on this roster that I either need to see playing time this year or at some point in the future or they're not a part of the plan. And at least to this point, Deshaun Watson really hasn't been thought to be a part of the plan.
So I'm going to draft a quarterback next year, but if we keep winning games, I'm not going to have a great draft pick to begin with. So I just. There's a lot of like, what do what, what's the long term strategy here? Am I just hoping for, am I hoping for a Super bowl this year? Is, is that where. Is, is that where what we've come to like, this is the, this is the moment. This is our moment.
[00:06:41] Ronnie Jams: We're gonna.
[00:06:41] Kenny Thunder: Deshaun Watson's gonna lead us to the promised land and then we cut him and move on and draft a rookie next year.
[00:06:47] Ronnie Jams: Like rides off into the sunset.
[00:06:49] Kenny Thunder: You know, I guess all questions for a different day. But I think that's the reason for the semi mixed emotions, which is just like, know what is the long term play here? Like, this team stands a very good chance just based on their schedule of starting 4 and 1. If you start 4 and 1, you start asking some real questions about the legitimacy of this team as a contender and if this team is being looked at as a contender. I don't know how we shirk away from the conversation about what is Deshaun Watson's future with this, with this football team. Is there, is there a legitimate chance that we're talking extension with desean Watson based on how this team does this year?
[00:07:31] Ronnie Jams: Yeah. And it's a, it's a tough spot to be in because obviously he's been really bad for the last four. And I mean it. I just, you know, it's. The NFL is a very, very much a what have you done for me lately League almost to a detriment.
And I think we're approaching that now is, is I don't want them to, you know, we won. Like you said, I'm happy they won. I cheered, was excited that they won when we were there. We'll get into booze and cheers here in a minute. But I was excited that they won. But the, I mean, you're not wrong. The more you look at it, you're like, but you still got this lingering over and every, every when we get, we're one step closer to them resigning him and having to deal with this for another however many years.
So hopefully, at least this time it'll be at a discount because he's not very good.
[00:08:29] Kenny Thunder: So what's, what's really disappointing is that if they were doing what they're doing this year right now, with any other human being on the planet, I'd be ecstatic. Over the moon, excited. I'd be going with 2 and 1. We got a young team. We've got promising wide receivers. The offensive line looks like it's coming together. The run game was alive for the first time all year. The defense looks good. Like I would be over the moon.
But the fact that it's being done with Deshaun Watson at the helm right now is just. There's something flat about it. Trying to figure out what, what does that mean for the rest of this year? What does it mean for the, the Browns going forward? What are we doing here?
[00:09:13] Ronnie Jams: Yeah, no, I agree. Let's, let's. Before we get too far into this topic, let's, let's change gears a little bit. I actually just want to. I had a couple notes here, things I wanted to talk about because I did go to the game this week.
It was a great game to go to. Beautiful weather.
Couldn't ask for better up in Cleveland for the home opener.
Never seen him win a home opener. Don't know if it's been done since I've watched him. But yeah, like, I mean, I'm actually being serious. Have they won the home opener since they came back?
[00:09:46] Kenny Thunder: I want to say once or twice.
[00:09:49] Ronnie Jams: One other time, maybe.
Yeah, I was, I was trying to. I was trying to. I mean, obviously we all have Google in our pocket, but I, you know, forgot about that. But we were talking about it at the game. I was like, I don't know that they've. They've won since they came back. Like, it might be like 1994, the last time they want a home opener.
You got it, so you're taking care of it. But anyways, a couple, a couple notes from being at the game. Nick Chub day. Big day.
Nick Chubb was able to retire as a Cleveland Brown this week. They brought him out. That was the loudest. That crowd was. Well, the second loudest, actually. That crowd was all day. I'll get to that in just a second.
But they, I mean, yeah, they really let Nick Chubb feel it. I mean, you know, to the point where we all know Nick Chubb, but we know that he doesn't Like, a lot of praise. He just. He's just like, I'm just trying to be me. I'm trying to do my thing. Like, I don't need that.
[00:10:43] Kenny Thunder: It looks like he could still play.
[00:10:47] Ronnie Jams: Yeah, he was. He's a big dude, but he came out and he was, like, waving to the crowd. You could tell, like, after the first 30 seconds of being cheered for, he's like, I'm uncomfortable now. I need to get out of here.
Just, you know, the same old Nick job that we know and love, and it just. To me.
And hold this thought. We're going to tie this back into all of our desean discussions. I'm sure, but just the. We've talked about it before on this show, and I'm mentioning it here again, is the dichotomy between Nick Chubb and everything that he stands for and does and was his entire professional career. And then desean Watson is just. It's like night and day.
And I think that's where people want to focus on right now and everything that's happening and what's. You know, and they want to say, you got to stop the booing, all that stuff. And it's. It's because they lose sight of things like this. Like, no, this is the guy. Listen, I have young kids now.
I have a young son.
Nick Chub is the guy I want my young son to model himself after. It's not Deshaan Watson. It will never be Deshaan Watson. As a matter of fact, I want my son to be the kid that the friend of. Of maybe somebody who may be thinking about doing bad things. And my son's the one that stands up and says, hey, that's bad. You shouldn't do that.
[00:12:08] Kenny Thunder: Well, I think, unfortunately, the precedent that we've set is that if you can do anything really well, you can pretty much do whatever you want and get away with it.
[00:12:17] Ronnie Jams: So. And I. And I think that's the problem. I think that's what we've been talking about. We've. We haven't got this deep into it on our show, but we've been talking about it. We've been talking around it for the last few weeks. And that's. That's exactly it. It's the fact that the booing and all that stuff goes deeper. And you. I know you've mentioned it and you said, like, that's where it all comes from, is. Yeah, it's personal. Yeah, it's. It. It has to do with more than just football.
But how do I sit here and Tell my kids, like, this guy's really good at throwing a football, which he's not. He's just average at best.
[00:12:51] Kenny Thunder: In DeShawn's case, you can go 16 to 30 for 140, and people forgive you for whatever you've done. So.
[00:12:57] Ronnie Jams: Yeah.
[00:12:58] Kenny Thunder: So, yeah, I mean, the whole thing is just. Again, like, I go back to, like, you know, Todd Monken, JW Jimmy. Like, they're the ones that built this and put us in this position. Andrew Barry, like, you guys have made this our reality, and, like, just.
I. I will never. I will never come to. To grips with any of that, with any of these guys for making us live this.
No, just. It's just really an unfortunate circumstance all the way around. But, hey, yeah, we're winning football games right now. Right? And that's important.
[00:13:31] Ronnie Jams: Yeah.
[00:13:33] Kenny Thunder: Like, I don't want to be Debbie Downer. We're two.
[00:13:35] Ronnie Jams: No, it really is. I mean, that's. That's why we play the game. Right? That's why we play the game is to win. It's.
[00:13:39] Kenny Thunder: It's just. It's just this, like, little annoying.
[00:13:43] Ronnie Jams: It just gnaws. That is.
[00:13:46] Kenny Thunder: That goes along with this entire season now that we have to continue to play out this Deshaun Watson experiment again.
[00:13:53] Ronnie Jams: Yep. So anyways, Nick, Chub day today. That was awesome. They also.
I know there was some confusion about this. Alex Mack was in the building. He was not added to the Ring of Honor. So. So the Browns actually have, like, two levels of this thing, right? They have their legends, and then they have their Ring of Honor, which is like, those are the guys.
And so he was honored. He was enshrined as a legend for the Cleveland Browns. He. I. I. From what I saw, it wasn't. They. They weren't adding him to the Ring of Honor. They were adding him as a legend, a Cleveland Browns legend. So big difference, because he's not getting his name up there like. Like Joe Thomas.
[00:14:32] Kenny Thunder: So I must have missed that entirely. So I didn't even realize he was in the building today.
[00:14:36] Ronnie Jams: Yeah. Good fan.
But, yeah, they did that because I was. I saw. The reason that I brought it up is because I saw a lot of people online going back and forth, like, I don't think he should be in the Ring of Honor. I mean, he spent half his career trying to get out of Cleveland.
I'm like, I agree with that. But then I looked into it a little bit more, and it's like, he was. He's not in the Ring of Honor. He's. He's a legend for the Cleveland Browns,
[00:14:59] Kenny Thunder: which there's a difference in the Ring of Fire.
[00:15:02] Ronnie Jams: Yeah, yeah,
[00:15:06] Kenny Thunder: Ring of Fire.
[00:15:07] Ronnie Jams: But anyways, and then a couple more things from the game. The best damn band in the land played at halftime, and it was pretty dope.
They did Aladdin songs.
The first formation they did. They. They made a boo, and then they wrote out a flag that was his piece of bread, and he was holding it.
And then the second formation they did. During the Genie song, they made the genie lamp, and then the genie, uh, they switched back and forth between formations. Then they did scripto for everybody. So script.
[00:15:40] Kenny Thunder: I don't.
Can't even begin to try and think about, like, how they come up with these ideas. But what. But what I do think is probably way more impressive is when they probably did this stuff over the last, like, 25 years before, they had, like, AI programs that could help you map out, like, where everybody needs to stand and walk. Like, it's probably a lot easier today than it used to be. But the fact that they've been doing this for decades, like, is very, very impressive. That, like, manually, somebody was scripting out where everybody to walk.
[00:16:12] Ronnie Jams: Yeah. Well, if you watch Script Ohio, too, I mean, they did. They did that to close everything out. And Script Ohio is such an impressive thing because the. The number of times they cross over each other and you could just see them. Like, one guy lifts his horn, the other guy goes down with it, and they have to go in between each other while they're walking and still doing this whole thing. It's just. It's pretty wild.
[00:16:32] Kenny Thunder: This is the burning of a sports cast where you break down marching bands.
[00:16:35] Ronnie Jams: Well, I'm just telling you guys all the things that happen at the game here.
And then finally, I. I did want to get to desean being booed because he was booed. It wasn't as relentless and as. As bad as I thought, but I think that's because they were. He did what he had to do. As far as if we're in the game or winning the game for most of the game, the fans will stay at bay. But it's kind of like you said, it's this gnawing thing because we did start to slow down there in the third quarter, and they started coming out and they got louder and louder every possession. We had the ball that we didn't do anything with it, and that desean was throwing balls into the dirt.
[00:17:10] Kenny Thunder: So,
[00:17:12] Ronnie Jams: yeah, I mean, they're. I don't think that's going anywhere. I think that's Going to continue all season as he continues. If he doesn't play well and we at least hold leads or at least are in close games, you're going to continue to hear that the entire season. I don't think that's. That's going away.
And then finally, Shador Sanders did get in for one play that was the loudest pop of the night. I felt like I was at a. I felt like I was at WrestleMania.
Dude came out and the entire place just instantaneously. It was insane.
And it. It was pretty fun.
And then he came out, and then there was a mixture of booze.
Yeah, he. There was a mixture of boos and cheers when he came out.
[00:17:54] Kenny Thunder: For a moment, we were delivered again, but that was not to be the case.
[00:17:59] Ronnie Jams: And I was just sitting there. I was like, I think the fans this time were very careful to not misconstrue anything with anybody's feelings. Number four in.
[00:18:11] Kenny Thunder: We wouldn't want to make it personal.
[00:18:12] Ronnie Jams: They waited till he got to the sideline, and then Shador ran in. And then ever. Like I said, it was just huge pop. It was. It was like a WWE Superstar.
So he couldn't confuse that for us. Cheering that he was hurt.
[00:18:29] Kenny Thunder: Well, that's good.
[00:18:30] Ronnie Jams: At least you just a few notes from the game, and then my wife had me take a picture of the scoreboard at the end of the game that said Browns win. Because she's like, I don't know if we've ever been to a game together where the Browns won. And I've been with my wife for 11 years.
[00:18:48] Kenny Thunder: Not very many opportunities for that.
[00:18:50] Ronnie Jams: Yeah, we're coming up on 11 years here and.
Yeah, coming up on 12 years, actually. Whoa.
But, yeah, we don't see a lot of Browns wins. But anyways, back to the actual game here in the offense. Like we said, DeSean Watson, not a very good game. 16 of 30144 yards. He did throw for two touchdowns and did not turn the ball over. That's always a huge positive.
Took two sacks for 17 yards, and then he added 11 rushes for 45 yards. I will say some of them were very well timed. It was on key third downs where we needed to move the chains and keep things going, and he was able to do that. So in that regard, there was some good things.
But overall, this. It's like you said, it was a very average game.
[00:19:40] Kenny Thunder: Yeah. I mean, again, like, credit to Sean Watson. Right. Like, take us back a couple of weeks. His whole world was. Was falling down around him.
Public enemy number one. Everybody Hated him. We were talking about the two week tryout all the way up until literally kickoff of Tampa Bay, where we were like, this is it for Deshaun Wats.
And for the last two weeks, he's come out and taken care of business, whatever that means. He was the exceptional. No, but he wasn't bad enough to get himself booed off the field or to lose his job. And he's won a couple of games here. So, like, credit to that guy for, you know, putting together whatever mental fortitude that he has and, and just picking up and going to work and getting the job done.
You know, I think especially after the press conference, most of us probably assumed that he was maybe too fragile for that to even be a possibility. So, you know, good on him for proving us wrong in that regard and moving forward and getting a couple wins on the board and, and look, I think they're well positioned right now, right? You have a short week, but you have Pittsburgh, who's not very good, you have the jets coming up. This team very well could start 4 and 1.
And that changes the entire conversation around what this season is.
[00:20:55] Ronnie Jams: Yeah, yeah. And I, I just want to, just for context here, and again, I hate, I, I hate keep.
To keep going back to this. And like you said, I don't want to be a Debbie Downer. We did, we did win, but I think we're, we're, we're losing sight of some things here too, is this guy's a $230 million quarterback.
And yeah, we won the game, and that's great. And we want wins. You know, we love to win. We want to win. That's why we're here.
But at the same time, like, I just find it so odd these last couple weeks that we are.
There's so many fans that are so over the moon that he's throwing for 230 and 144 yards just because we won the game. Like, it's almost like we won the game in spite of it. Like, the defense really won the game, to be honest with you. He had two plays. Give him that.
[00:21:49] Kenny Thunder: But you're paid like one of the best quarterbacks in the league, right? Like, you're paid like a Josh Allen.
[00:21:55] Ronnie Jams: Like, he's up here still playing down here.
[00:21:57] Kenny Thunder: Josh Allen is running for two touchdowns every week.
[00:22:00] Ronnie Jams: Like, yeah.
[00:22:03] Kenny Thunder: So, yeah, I mean, look, I guess, you know, the reality is he's coming off the injuries. He's just not the player he once was. Like, we have to swallow that. But like, to your point, right, like, the, the Expectation the bar should be higher, but because we're in Cleveland that by default the bar is so low. For what we will accept is like, this is good enough.
When you're not paid like a good enough quarterback. Right. You're not, you're not paid like one of just another guy. Like you're paid like the guy.
[00:22:34] Ronnie Jams: Yeah.
Moving on here from, from quarterback talk, though, unless you had anything else to add.
The Browns running game actually showed up today.
[00:22:46] Kenny Thunder: Signs of life, proof of life.
[00:22:48] Ronnie Jams: Yeah. So I was excited to see that we kind of put it on him last week. We put a little bit of a challenge on. Not that they listened to us, but that we put last week and said, hey, what is going on here?
And it was mostly on Quinn, Sean Judkins, to be honest with you, because Quinn, Sean, basically since after the first three, four weeks of last season, has averaged like 1.9 yards of carry.
And so we really, you know, we said we want to take a closer look at this because, you know, is it him? Is it the line? What's going on here? And not that he, you know, lit anything on fire tonight, but he went out there. He, I thought he ran hard tonight. He had a couple runs that were around that 10 yard mark or whatever.
And so today his final stat line was 18 for 70 for 3.9 yards per carry. And I mean, it's again, not lighten up the stat sheet or anything like that, but it's a marked improvement from what he's been so far, at least since the first four games of his career.
[00:23:52] Kenny Thunder: Again, like, we just haven't seen anything happen to this point. The, the leading rusher for the first two weeks was Deshaun Watson. And DeSean Watson had another 45 yards on the ground today. So it wasn't like he wasn't in the mix.
But to at least see Q, you know, make his mark on the game today, I think was important.
Which again, like, we've given credit to desean for showing up, taking care of business, credit to this coaching staff because the defense non existent in week one, showed up in week two and week three.
The running game really non existent in weeks one and weeks two, weeks three. We've now seen the running game show up. So, like this team is making strides, getting better week to week, where we're seeing legitimate improvement from, from really all sides of the ball to where this team looks like they are just, they're moving up the ladder, they're getting better as a group, which is good. And that's what you expect from A coaching staff and season long progression. So, you know, I, I don't know. Look, we've talked about Todd Monkin as kind of this placeholder.
You know, maybe, maybe he's got more longevity here than, than we thought initially because he handled the quarterback thing so poorly this offseason. But, but something is, is clearly going right in that building at the moment.
[00:25:18] Ronnie Jams: Yeah. And I will say this, this is the first week and I think this goes back to the press conference from after last week's win. Right when he said Browns is the Browns or whatever he said f that like between then and right now, this is the first full week where I'm like, Todd Monkin's not that may. May not be as bad as I thought he was. I might have to drop the sleepy Todd moniker because I mean I, I will say this, if nothing else, I will take this all day over the energy that Kevin Stefanski brought when he was here.
[00:25:58] Kenny Thunder: Sure.
[00:25:59] Ronnie Jams: Like just the fact that he does get fired up. He gets involved with the fans. Today he did a victory lap around the entire, through the entire dog pound, giving high fives and yelling with, with fans and getting excited.
[00:26:11] Kenny Thunder: He did that last week too. Enter Tampa Bay.
[00:26:13] Ronnie Jams: But, but that, yeah, you're right. And, and that's stuff that you would have never saw with Kevin Stefanski. And I think it does resonate with the team. I don't know if you saw earlier this week there was a video that came out.
They played Don't Stop Believing during their practice and it, they cut it off as they were ending practice and the whole team as they're coming in to break it down at the end of practice, just kept singing together.
It is small things like that that don't look like a lot when you see them. But that's the signs. Those are signs of a, of a team that is together that at least is buying into something that the coaching staff is bringing to the table. And I think like I said, it's just the first time that I've opened my, I've. It's opened my eyes to the point where I'm like, I, Todd Monken might be okay.
[00:26:56] Kenny Thunder: I think that's the important phrase there is the buying in. Right. Because every coach is selling themselves in their program and not everybody buys it.
And you know, Kevin I think had some buy in for a while and the team had some success, obviously two coach of the year awards. So like they won some games during Kevin's tenure, but it didn't ever seem like it was a cohesive unit that was totally bought in on all the kind of like egghead coach speak that we got from Kevin all the time.
Where it does feel like this team is, is maybe more bought into the, you know, rough and tumble, blue collar, like, let's, let's go kick asses mentality that's coming from, from Todd Monken, at least to this point that we've seen.
[00:27:44] Ronnie Jams: Yeah, yeah, no, and I think that's exactly it. I think that the.
Kevin Stefanski had his own, his own version of accountability. And his version of accountability was gotta get better, we gotta, we gotta improve and we will get better.
But there was no real.
Like, that doesn't mean anything when Todd Monkin goes out there and he's like, yeah, like we won the game. And that was great and it was awesome and I celebrated with everybody. But then he also in his press conference says, in the third quarter, we played pretty bad. We didn't give our fans anything to cheer about. And that can't happen because we need these fans. We need them in at the end of the game.
And to acknowledge that and to, to voice that, I mean, it ingratiates you to the fans, but I think it also, it's that accountability on the other end. It's like, yeah, we won, but I also see these things and this is where we can improve.
[00:28:35] Kenny Thunder: So, yeah, he's still got a long road with me.
[00:28:40] Ronnie Jams: I'm not saying he's great right now. I'm saying I, I'm. It at least has opened my eyes to possibility that he might be okay here.
[00:28:47] Kenny Thunder: But hey, two and one is a good start, coach. It's a good start.
[00:28:50] Ronnie Jams: This is the best start in a while, right? So, yeah, on offense, the, the young receivers, Boston and Concepcion, this is the first game where they were, I mean, more or less non existent. There was a couple good catches there for Boston, but for the most part they were non existent. They did a pretty good job bottling up all of our receivers today, which is good because you talked about they're improving in different facets of the game as we go on week to week. And Harold Phantom was like, that's okay, I got you guys this week. I'll take care of it.
Seven.
Seven for 51 and two touchdowns.
[00:29:25] Kenny Thunder: Yeah, I mean, Fan had the two big scores, but even the.
His stat line wasn't, Wasn't one that would make you do a double take. We threw for 140 yards at the team. Right. Like there wasn't a lot going on through the air. So I don't know that it was anything that, you know, stood out in terms of, like, how they were playing. What did stand out to me is that we have another week where Jerry Judy has not been targeted one time, which I kind of love, by the way.
[00:29:53] Ronnie Jams: Yeah. I'm ready for them to. To trade him away and his. And I will say, seeing it in per. You see it on, on tv, it's not like it's hidden or anything, but his body language is so terrible.
He just. Which I don't know if it's just simply he's. He's checked out to this point. He's. He's fed up with the facts, which is his own doing, because he's not that great, but that the two rookie receivers have passed him up in the depth chart and are showing him up just as players. And he's like, well, I don't even know why I'm here.
Which, I mean, we don't either, to be honest.
But yeah, I mean, he just. I will say it's a lot better than last year when he was screaming on the sidelines and stuff because at least he's keeping his mouth shut.
He's not causing drama on the sidelines.
[00:30:39] Kenny Thunder: I just really. I don't know if him were closer, but.
[00:30:43] Ronnie Jams: Well, I just, I. I'm wondering. We just talked about Todd Monkett and how he's more of a blue collar, like, almost like no nonsense type of guy. I wonder if it's already the games. Well, he's just already made it clear before the season even started. He's like, we ain't doing it this year if we see that. Like. No, because you haven't, you haven't seen it out of Judy at all. He's just, he's quiet about it. He's. It's. It's still very poor body language. He's not coming off as a very good teammate right now, but at least he's keeping his mouth shut. So flipping over to the defense here. Defense played much better in this one.
I mean, they, they had them bottled up all, all afternoon. I know the actual stat line from Bryce Young says 291 yards passing, but it took 48 attempts to get there. He was 26 of 48 for 291.
Chuba Hubbard had 19 carries for 82 yards.
[00:31:40] Kenny Thunder: They did sack him three times.
[00:31:42] Ronnie Jams: Yeah, and they did sack Bryce Young three times. And Mason Graham is coming on like gangbusters, man. He's just. He's having a year. He's already up to four sacks. He had two more in this one.
I mean, you said he was on pace for 17. Well, now he's on pace for 18, so maybe more.
[00:31:58] Kenny Thunder: Very clearly a beneficiary of just like Miles not being in the mix now.
[00:32:04] Ronnie Jams: Right.
[00:32:04] Kenny Thunder: Because I think there were a lot of those last year where even if you were getting to the quarterback, so was Miles, so you end up kind of splitting.
[00:32:13] Ronnie Jams: He was there. So. Yeah.
[00:32:14] Kenny Thunder: Like, how many times did we do the half sack thing, like, during the stat line during dog stuff?
[00:32:19] Ronnie Jams: Highlight that comment right there from Kid Wilson.
So I will say this. Does it seem like Miles not being here really doesn't make a difference?
I am. I'm gonna disagree with this. Take pretty hard, because I think we do notice that Miles isn't here. I mean, the first game.
It's only been two weeks since week one.
The first game, we got embarrassed. On the defensive side, I would say that they're playing much better as a team, just like you just said, like, it's. It's a team effort now getting to the quarterback. Whereas last year it was basically like, miles will do it.
But we can't forget. I mean, Miles had a stretch last year where he went 12 sacks in three games or four games or whatever. It was like, yeah, it's. It's different. There was a lot more pressure.
But I don't. I don't know. I mean, I get where you're coming from. I think the defense is still coming together right now.
[00:33:17] Kenny Thunder: I think it's hard. I think it's apples and oranges a little bit because it's a different. It's a different scheme. It's a different coaching staff.
And they relied on.
[00:33:25] Ronnie Jams: They tried to keep the scheme the same as what they were saying, but it's still a different defensive quarter. He's got his own wrinkles on everything.
[00:33:31] Kenny Thunder: They. They relied on Miles so much last year to create all of the pressure.
And if other guys got home, great, but Miles was always going to be there as well.
And this year, you know, you don't have that guy. So I think there's a different level of desperation, a different level of need from a production standpoint for each of these guys on that defensive front.
And it's just a different type of game. I think they have to do more conceptually with, you know, blitzing backers and stunts and things that they're doing to try and get different. Create different looks versus, like, I think it was easier when you could just take Miles and line him up anywhere, just like, stand him up and put him at nose tackle. Like like, you could do all kinds of stuff. Just moving Miles around where it's just a very different game plan now.
[00:34:19] Ronnie Jams: Yeah, Highlight. Highlight that last one, too. I actually think that plays into what we're saying here, Kid Wilson, is the fact that our defense was on the field so much last year and we still were as dominant as we were on defense is kind of what we're talking about. We haven't. I'm not saying this defense can't get there either, as a team, I think, but where I'm coming from with this is if you have Miles Garrett on this defense instead of Jared Verse right now, I think we're much better.
[00:34:49] Kenny Thunder: Sure.
[00:34:50] Ronnie Jams: I mean, Jared Verse still has yet to kind of establish himself on this defense, so I don't think you start
[00:34:57] Kenny Thunder: a sluggish week one if Miles is here.
[00:34:59] Ronnie Jams: Right. That's kind of. My point is. I don't. I don't think that it's.
I. I wouldn't go so far as to say it doesn't make a difference. I think there is a diff. A difference is made.
But I do think the defense is starting to gel and start to come together.
[00:35:13] Kenny Thunder: And that's why I said apples and oranges, too, though, because that last point, I think, brings it home. Right. Which is the offense was putrid last year, and the defense was on the field for the majority of every game, and they still were carrying their water and doing their job, and a lot of it was Miles. So. Yeah, just a testament to, like, what his excellence truly meant to a football team, which this year, the defense doesn't have quite the same burden. I mean, the offense isn't great, but it's. It's moving the ball.
[00:35:42] Ronnie Jams: It's actually moving the ball.
[00:35:44] Kenny Thunder: And they're scoring points, so, you know, it's hell.
[00:35:48] Ronnie Jams: That's two weeks in a row we scored more than 16. We did that like, twice last year.
[00:35:51] Kenny Thunder: It's just very different all around.
[00:35:54] Ronnie Jams: Yeah.
Rod Dog checked in on Facebook, too. Just so you know, Kenny. So he's here. He said we look and sound good, so he's. He's attracted to us.
[00:36:05] Kenny Thunder: We know our Dog's looking good.
[00:36:07] Ronnie Jams: Yeah, Rod Dog's always looking good. But anyways, no.
Yeah. So on defense, though, like I said, just overall, much better play this week.
Ronnie Hickman with the game ceiling interception there at the end. Quincy Williams was all over the place this week. Saw his name come up a lot.
Emmanuel McNeil. Warren finally got some playing time in there and some decent playing time. He had five tackles today.
Mason Graham had two sacks. Isaiah McGuire had another sack today.
Not another for him, but he was the other sack, is what I'm saying.
[00:36:45] Kenny Thunder: Smart.
[00:36:47] Ronnie Jams: Yeah. Anybody else on defense stand out to you today?
[00:36:52] Kenny Thunder: I think you covered most of them. Sorry, I was just looking through the injury report to see if there was anybody new that was significant and I don't think there was, that was, knew there wasn't a game time decision already.
[00:37:06] Ronnie Jams: Yeah, so, so, but by and large, defense, much better effort this week. I, I do think they're going to continue to grow. I think it's going to continue to be good.
I, I think, I do think we have a top 10 defense. I just think they had a slow start.
[00:37:20] Kenny Thunder: I, I, I'm really encouraged by, by Mason Graham. I mean, I, Mason is, you know, we were a little unsure of him coming into this year and again, a lot of that is in that same front, but I think our expectations were really high for him because of where he was drafted and he's done nothing but deliver all year long to this point. So hopefully he continues that momentum and, and, and just continues to, to ascend into a really great player.
[00:37:54] Ronnie Jams: Yeah, Titus Howard, Is that who he's talking about?
So what do we do about Titus? Titus?
Yeah, that's.
First of all, I just want to say this. One of those false starts was not a false start.
I was standing. They showed the replay on the big board. He literally didn't move like, he was just, he was in his stance, didn't flinch. I was expecting like the slightest flinch, just enough to get a false start and him standing there like, why did I get a fault? No, it was nothing. It was nothing. So I don't know. I mean there was that false start. He had another one a few minutes later.
[00:38:37] Kenny Thunder: Overall, the sloppiest part of this whole team right now is still operations and pre snap assignments and getting guys set and getting guys aligned properly and snap count, I mean there's, what did we have to, I mean it was, was, was it 14? How many penalties do we have today?
It was a lot. I feel like we had, I will tell you, keep talking 12, 12 for 84 yards. So, yeah, another day where it's like we talked so much about, we had
[00:39:09] Ronnie Jams: almost twice as many penalties as they
[00:39:11] Kenny Thunder: did and we still can't get it right. And some of these are in pretty crucial times where it's like you, you're in the third and one and all of a sudden now you're backing up five because somebody wasn't lined up right, which is just Inexcusable. Todd. And Todd. Todd owned that a little bit at the end.
[00:39:28] Ronnie Jams: Well, and the biggest one was we were. Is this what you just. We were third and one. Went all the way back down, back to third and 11. Like it was, it was the, yeah, the, the air in the stadium was completely sucked out at that point. Everybody. That was kind of the moment when a lot of the booze started happening. Everybody was like, are you serious? Like what is going on right now?
[00:39:46] Kenny Thunder: Yeah, I think. And Todd kind of owned that. In the press conference after the game, he said, browns have to stop hurting Browns. Kind of a hurt people, hurt people thing.
But, but they've got to get that cleaned up. So that has to be the next shoe to drop. I think if you're Todd Monkin tonight and you're going home and thinking about what do I address as we come into this week, into this short week, which is, hey, look, running games going, defense is going. Sean's, you know, playing decent football at the moment.
We've got to get things cleaned up because these self inflicted penalties, these self inflicted wounds are going to catch up to us if we're playing a better team, a better coached team.
[00:40:26] Ronnie Jams: Yeah. And yes, some of the roughing, the pastor calls were BS on both sides. They got the Browns for one, where they barely touched Bryce Young after he let go of the ball. And then on the flip side, DeSean Watson got his head completely turned around on a face mask. That wasn't called today.
It was blatant. Like I was watching. I was in the 500 section, guys. I was, I was not close and I, as soon as it happened, I was like, he's literally facing the opposite direction. How do you not call that?
And then there was an.
[00:40:57] Kenny Thunder: It was a bad one too, because the referee was three feet from it.
[00:41:02] Ronnie Jams: Yeah.
[00:41:02] Kenny Thunder: Staring directly at him to the point where it's, it, it's in the screenshot like from, like from the game. Like you can.
[00:41:10] Ronnie Jams: And there was one shortly after that same frame. There was one shortly after that. Hold on. Right before.
[00:41:15] Kenny Thunder: Still on that. Still on that one.
[00:41:16] Ronnie Jams: Still on that one. Yeah.
[00:41:18] Kenny Thunder: Not only did he get his face ripped off before the defender wrapped and took him to the ground, he looked directly at the referee and said, hey. And he literally grabbed his face mask. He was like, did you not see the guy that was pulling on my face mask? Which again was standing directly in front of him the entire time. So he didn't see it.
[00:41:38] Ronnie Jams: He didn't see it. It's just, it's just out like don't get me wrong. I know everything that comes along. We talked about it already, this episode. I know everything that comes along with Deshaun Watson. That doesn't mean you don't call penalties.
And there was one that happened later in the game, too, which was right before the one they. They finally did call, and he had thrown the ball, and it was. It was well after he had let go of it, and he got basically smacked in the face by the defender. And they didn't call that one either. Like. Like he got a jab to the face.
[00:42:09] Kenny Thunder: Although I think it worked out for us, though, because I think because of the no calls earlier when he threw the pick in the end zone towards the end of the game, which would have been. We got the interception, we got the call, and I thought that one was very ticky, tacky, very light.
[00:42:24] Ronnie Jams: Yeah. The one in. The one that you're talking about, Kid Wilson, was when our guy landed on him, and he was literally already in the process of making a hit, and there was absolutely no way that you land any differently than he did.
That one was the most egregious one that I saw, because I remember even from the stadium, I was texting you and Bone Kenny, and I was like, apparently you're not allowed to hit the guy anymore.
[00:42:49] Kenny Thunder: Who hit it? Was it Verse that hit him on that? I can't remember.
[00:42:52] Ronnie Jams: It was either Verse or McGuire. I want to say one of those two. It was one of those guys. But what I did think was super
[00:42:58] Kenny Thunder: impressive to that point, which is like, look, I mean, we've. We've had these conversations in the past, too, about, like, how do you even tackle a quarterback in today's.
[00:43:05] Ronnie Jams: You got to be able to contort your body midair.
[00:43:08] Kenny Thunder: You can't hit him high, you can't hit them low. You can't land on them.
I thought Mason Graham, on his first sack, did a tremendous job of like, lining him up in the, you know, proverbial strike zone and making sure that it was a clean hit. I mean, it was. It was as textbook as it could possibly be.
[00:43:26] Ronnie Jams: Yeah. So, yeah, I mean, they just had no idea how to call roughing the pastor today. Just none whatsoever.
And then last thing here, as far as just, like, game opera things that were going on throughout the game. Special teams. I said, we love our special teams here on the Burning River Sportscast.
So Andre Schmidt remains perfect on the season. Two for two today, one of one extra points.
Did not miss. Corey Bajoraquez.
Five punts for 243 yards. That's a 48.6 yard average and put three of those inside the 20. So
[00:44:01] Kenny Thunder: you were at the game, so you probably didn't see the.
You definitely didn't see the graphic that they put up, which was Corey Bajoraquez has had something like. I can't remember the exact number now. It's 110 or 115 punts inside the 20, which I think is a Browns record, which is kind of hard to believe because we've had a lot of punters come through.
[00:44:20] Ronnie Jams: There's been some decent ones.
[00:44:21] Kenny Thunder: We've had some good ones, you know, like Chris Gardacky's of the world that were, like, pretty good punters, like, and it feels like they were here for. Maybe Gardaki wasn't here all that long, but I felt like some of the punters that have been here, like, a while or for a while and punted the ball a lot.
[00:44:35] Ronnie Jams: I feel like we had a really good one just before Bajora Quezo was here for a while.
[00:44:42] Kenny Thunder: Britain Colquitt. Right?
[00:44:43] Ronnie Jams: Yeah, Colquitt. Or was it here for several years?
[00:44:46] Kenny Thunder: Dustin. I can't remember the cold.
[00:44:48] Ronnie Jams: Whatever his name was. Yeah, but I'm just saying we've had good. We've had some good punters, and the fact that he's put that many inside the 20 and that's a Browns record is pretty. Pretty awesome. But Andre Schmidt. I just want to point out one more time that we kind of Schmidt all over Schmidt at the beginning of last. Last season when he came in.
[00:45:06] Kenny Thunder: We'll own that.
[00:45:07] Ronnie Jams: We'll own that. We were skeptical at first. He didn't do very well his first few games. Since then, dude's been lights out. Like, he does not miss.
And he's. He's kicking for Cleveland like it's a hard place to kick, and he does not miss.
[00:45:21] Kenny Thunder: He needs a shirt.
[00:45:22] Ronnie Jams: Yeah. So hat tip to Andre Schmidt. And we actually have an autographed Andre Schmidt photo that is over there in the. It's somewhere in there. I think it might be on the desk. Look next to you. I don't know.
[00:45:36] Kenny Thunder: It's somewhere.
[00:45:37] Ronnie Jams: It's somewhere in there. We got. We got to get that put up.
[00:45:40] Kenny Thunder: I got a Pokemon card here from our Browns backers.
[00:45:43] Ronnie Jams: Rod Dog. Rod Dog. He's watching.
But yeah, so good job, Andre Schmidt. But that. I mean, that was. That's pretty much the game. I don't think there was any big injuries.
Fumble was the only snafu our special teams has made.
Yeah, it wasn't Good.
And it basically instantly gave them at least a field goal, so it's never good.
[00:46:07] Kenny Thunder: Yeah, that escalated quickly at the beginning. At the beginning of the second half.
[00:46:11] Ronnie Jams: There we went. So we went down.
You know, as you do at halftime, you go to get your concessions, you go to the restroom, do all that stuff while you're there. By the time I came back, like, they had already scored and they had the ball. We're about to kick another field goal, and I was like, what the hell? Just. I. It's literally been like a minute and a half in the second half. Like, what is going on?
[00:46:30] Kenny Thunder: Yeah, yeah. That was not a deal.
[00:46:34] Ronnie Jams: So.
But luckily they got their feet under them quickly and stopped the bleeding and. And got going, so.
But yeah, Kenny, dog of the week. We gotta do our nominees, so I'll let you take it. First you got nominee for dog of the week.
[00:46:53] Kenny Thunder: I'm gonna go Harold Fannin, obviously, he had all the points today, so big, big week for Harold Fannin. Two touchdowns and was leading receiver. So look, we. And we said early on, especially after week one, which is like, he's one of your best weapons. You have to get him involved. And, you know, we're giving all the credit and all the flowers tonight, credit again to Todd Monkin, which is the last two weeks. Harold Fannin's been a much bigger part of. Of the game plan and production of this offense.
[00:47:23] Ronnie Jams: Yep. I'm gonna go. Mason Graham, we've been kind of joking these first couple weeks. We're like, oh, if he gets a sack a week, that's 17, that's pretty damn good for a defensive tackle. Well, today he got two, so it's going even better. Now.
[00:47:39] Kenny Thunder: We're.
[00:47:39] Ronnie Jams: We're up to.
He's probably gonna get, like, 20 now. So, you know, we're talking. We're starting to sniff the record here, but wouldn't that be something if Mason
[00:47:52] Kenny Thunder: Graham's at the Zach record the year after Miles did?
[00:47:55] Ronnie Jams: That would be bonkers, man. But, yeah, I'm going Mason Graham in this one, and I think we got to pick one for Bone. He fell asleep on us, apparently, and didn't get Give me a dog of the week. So I think it should be. What do you think, Andre Schmidt, or should we go.
[00:48:10] Kenny Thunder: I was gonna say Ronnie Hickman. He had the game ceiling pick. I mean, look, it was a little touch and go there at the end. That Panthers offense can score points, and this defense kept him in check all day long. So I was a little worried when they got the ball back with A minute left and that this team could move the ball quickly and the defense
[00:48:26] Ronnie Jams: got real quiet for like, like not quiet. They were loud because we were on defense. But it got to tell. It was tentious. It was.
[00:48:35] Kenny Thunder: We. We didn't take the points and we tried to go for it and then turn the ball over.
A very good idea like that.
[00:48:42] Ronnie Jams: Yeah, well, hindsight's always clear. To be fair. To be fair. We talked about this while we were at the game. I've been at two games at Brown Stadium where we've gone for a field goal as time expired and it was returned for a touchdown after being blocked and we lost. So one of the most. I said this sentence today.
It was one of the rarest plays in all of football and I was at two of them live.
[00:49:07] Kenny Thunder: Yeah, I think you still have to play the percentages there. I don't think you can play the. This happened in Brown's history one time.
[00:49:12] Ronnie Jams: I don't know.
[00:49:13] Kenny Thunder: Or twice.
It's like lightning striking you. Right. It's hotter than the surface of the sun, but it's probably not going to happen to you twice.
[00:49:20] Ronnie Jams: Yeah, I mean, that's probably fair. I. As much as I say that now and I've. I've witnessed it, I mean, the chance. The chances are now exponentially worse that it's going to happen again.
So, like the fact that I've seen it twice in the last probably 10 years, it's not. It shouldn't happen again. So, yeah, I mean, to your point, I would have. I would have taken Wilson.
[00:49:42] Kenny Thunder: I take the points.
I forced them to go down and score seven to beat me.
[00:49:47] Ronnie Jams: I actually, earlier in the game, we ended up scoring a touchdown and it worked out.
However, there was a point early on in the game when they went up 10, I think it was 10 nothing.
And that touchdown, before it happened, they had gone for it on fourth down and I was like, I would have taken the points. It's a defensive battle up to this point. I would have taken it. I would have taken the points.
So, you know, don't listen to me, I guess. I don't know.
[00:50:14] Kenny Thunder: Ronnie Hickman, dog of the week.
[00:50:16] Ronnie Jams: That's the nominee for Bone.
What's up, hippie picks. Good to see you on here. Hopefully you catch up. We're probably way behind because you just got in, but watch the whole show anyways, Kenny, final thoughts here.
[00:50:31] Kenny Thunder: Final thoughts
[00:50:35] Ronnie Jams: again.
[00:50:35] Kenny Thunder: I'm staring down a Brown schedule where this team could legitimately be 4 and 1 and I have no idea what to make of that. At this point. So thank God for the Cleveland Indians Guardians and their playoff birth and hopefully
[00:50:49] Ronnie Jams: AL champs for the third year in a row.
AL World Central champs for the third year in a row.
[00:50:55] Kenny Thunder: You know, we've, we've talked a lot about the leadership and ownership of the Guardians and how we don't spend enough money and all these things, but consistently, year after year that that whole organization produces good baseball, a good product on the field, a good game day experience and they, they make the most of what they have to spend and is illustrated by another year where we now are looking at a postseason here for Cleveland baseball. So congratulations to them, good luck to them the rest of the way.
You know, fall baseball, anything can happen, right? Like, they probably won't.
[00:51:34] Ronnie Jams: Playoffs are wild. Maybe playoffs are wild.
I will shout out to them too, just because you're on that topic.
A couple weeks, it was about a week and a half. Two weeks ago they eclipsed the 2 million number as far as attendance for the season in their stadium.
And that's the first time that's been done since 93 to 95 for like it was three seasons in a row. That's the first time since 93 to 95 that's been done when they, you know, we're in two out of three World Series.
[00:52:06] Kenny Thunder: So it's because I went to two games this year.
[00:52:09] Ronnie Jams: Yeah, that's what it was. That must have been it.
And then also we'll talk more about this on our show this week, but I went to Banana ball at Progressive Field this week and that was pretty dope. So.
No, I don't know that. I think it's too early to tell whether Baker, whether they're regretting paying Baker.
Sorry, I'm answering a comment here. I saw it pop up. I think it's too early to tell.
That team's not very good. It's not on.
[00:52:34] Kenny Thunder: Yeah, that team's. I think the team is not very good. And he did dislocate a thumb today, which is not ideal. So we'll see how that, how long he's going to be banged up with that because it looks like it's just throwing his hand as well. So could be an interesting year for them. I, I think they.
[00:52:49] Ronnie Jams: I'm not saying no to your question. I'm just saying it's too early.
Yeah.
My final thought this week is go Browns.
Like, I'm just, I'm just like, don't get me wrong, I'm ecstatic that we're winning.
It's awesome. I love it when the Browns win. I actually was saying as we're leaving, we were leaving the stadium, I was like, I'm so excited. Everybody can have a good week this week.
And, yeah, I love it when the Browns win. But I'm just. I'm with you, Kenny Thunder, or as Bone likes to refer to you as, But I don't have enough respect for you. As Mr. Thunder.
I.
[00:53:27] Kenny Thunder: It just would be so much more enjoyable if it was anybody but desean. If it was anybody else, it could be anybody else.
[00:53:33] Ronnie Jams: Any name.
[00:53:34] Kenny Thunder: Pick any name and I'd be like, this is awesome. This is so good. We're gonna win the Super Bowl. Like, but it's Deshaun. So I'm like, what are we doing?
[00:53:45] Ronnie Jams: Nobody knows. Nobody knows. That's why I say it with a question mark.
But anyways, let me remind everybody to call the Burning response hot take hotline.
[00:53:55] Kenny Thunder: Yeah, call that. Call that.

That was pretty dope because Nick Chubb was there. I also wore my. My throwback Nick Chubb jersey. That's stark white. And I was terrified the entire game that something was going to get on it.
[00:54:51] Kenny Thunder: Yeah, it's always, always a risky move to take that into the stadium, but
[00:54:54] Ronnie Jams: I was like, I have to wear it. It's Nick Chubb. I have to. True.
But yeah, so that'll do it for us. Kenny, what can we expect this week?
[00:55:03] Kenny Thunder: What can we expect?
[00:55:05] Ronnie Jams: This isn't updated to be careful.

[00:55:33] Kenny Thunder: Yeah, I think that's pretty, pretty safe bet. So look for us live. I don't know what time exactly that's going to be maybe 11ish, 1130. But we'll hop on when the game gets done.
As soon as the game is done. So join us for that.
