[00:01:16] Speaker A: It's time.
[00:01:17] Speaker B: Time for the Burning River sportscast. Two simple words wide right have single handedly pulled a season of fanbase and its football team back from the brink in roller coaster fashion. The nauseating ups and downs were mitigated by a single of an incoming front off of our great lake. Maybe we ought to rethink that dome in the words home field advantage after all. For a game that came down to a foot and a ball, how nice was it to have Philip Dawson in the house smashing guitars? This may have been one of the most emotional Browns game I can ever remember. No one truly believed you had any shot to hang around, decimated by key injuries in the face of a Super Bowl contender. No one gave you a shot to even keep this thing close. Yet somehow this team rallied and showed us all a glimmer of hope as.
[00:02:04] Speaker A: To what could be.
[00:02:06] Speaker B: But still missing your $230,000,000 man. Can this team continue to win games? Can the defense continue to stifle our opponents? And do we need an upgrade at the quarterback position? Or can XFL keep our Brownies at the top of the division until oops, I dropped my towel returns?
[00:02:23] Speaker A: We'll break it all down for you.
[00:02:25] Speaker B: Next on the Burning River Sportscast.
But big is beautiful.
[00:02:30] Speaker A: That's true. I agree with you.
[00:02:32] Speaker B: Except you because my wife and know she likes it a little hard. I like it a little soft.
[00:02:38] Speaker A: Gators bitches better be wearing Jimmy's.
[00:02:41] Speaker C: I've been riding that since Sunday at 04:00.
[00:02:44] Speaker A: Or has he been riding it?
[00:02:46] Speaker C: No, I don't actually know him.
[00:02:49] Speaker A: If you do know him, potentially.
But you're full masked. I got it in London. Oh, you talk like this.
[00:02:59] Speaker C: It's not my fault I have bad taste.
[00:03:02] Speaker A: Please, sir.
[00:03:05] Speaker D: One of my favorite pictures of my playing career is I'm running out of the tunnel and just seeing the crowd behind. And that was a feeling that never got old. No matter what our record was, no matter what the situation was, the fans always showed up and supported. And that's one thing that I loved about the city and I loved about.
[00:03:26] Speaker A: Playing there quit knocking my goddamn crown over, you son of a I won't. You up.
[00:03:40] Speaker B: Welcome into the Burning River Sports Cast, presented by Tapid Media and brought to you by the Cleveland Browns Fan Cruise. And if you haven't bought your tickets to the Fan Cruise yet, you're wrong.
I'm your host, Teddy Thunder, joined by my co host and the man who instantly pees every time Mercury is in retrograde, the one and only Red Hot Ronnie Jams.
And a great big hello to Tapin Media's only paleo archaeologist, the man with the many sacks, but only one big bone. The big bone man. How many bones have you dusted this week?
[00:04:12] Speaker C: Just one, sir.
[00:04:13] Speaker B: Nice.
[00:04:14] Speaker A: Just one bone.
[00:04:15] Speaker B: Back to red hot. Two questions.
[00:04:16] Speaker A: Yo.
[00:04:17] Speaker B: If you could Greco Roman wrestle one Browns alumni going on the Fan Cruise, who would it be?
[00:04:22] Speaker A: Probably John Greco.
[00:04:23] Speaker B: Probably John Greco. And after John Greco beat you into submission, where can all the followers of all ancient Roman sports find the latest and greatest in Browns potting?
[00:04:33] Speaker A: I like how you assume, just because he was a superior athlete at one point in his life and played lineman in the NFL, that John Greco would beat me in wrestling.
[00:04:43] Speaker B: And Greco Roman wrestling. His name is a part of the name.
[00:04:45] Speaker A: I don't care if it was accurate. I don't care. I'm not as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as John Greco ever was.
[00:04:51] Speaker B: If it was red hot Ronnie wrestling, I'd be like, yeah, Ronnie would probably win.

[00:06:02] Speaker B: John Greco.
[00:06:03] Speaker A: Yep. And finally, we've got the Week Seven preview of the game against the Indianapolis Colts. It's going to be a good one. So let's kick things off the right way. Let's start with the Burning River news story of the week. However, we're not going to do that.
Kenny has been shopping. He's got a semi large purchase that he's been shopping for, and he wants to talk about it.
[00:06:46] Speaker B: I'm semi large.
[00:06:47] Speaker A: You're a large semi.
[00:06:49] Speaker B: Thank you.
[00:06:50] Speaker A: The biggest man I know. Thank you.
[00:06:54] Speaker B: He just can't stop.
[00:06:55] Speaker A: You're at least three times as large as any other man I know.
[00:07:00] Speaker B: Thank you.
[00:07:01] Speaker A: Do you know how big you are?
It doesn't matter how big you are because you're really big. All right, go on. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. You're not that big. You're just pretty big.
[00:07:09] Speaker B: Welcome to the Ronnie Jams Show.
[00:07:12] Speaker A: I'm your host, the delightful Ronnie Jams.
[00:07:16] Speaker B: I am going to keep this short and sweet just because I'm pissed off about it and I want buyers to.
[00:07:19] Speaker A: Beware are you mad that I was calling you big?
[00:07:21] Speaker B: No, you can't get mad over something, you know.
[00:07:26] Speaker A: You are what you eat. Billy, give food. A lot of it.
[00:07:28] Speaker B: Billy Give called you ugly, and you were like, that hurts my feelings. I'd be like, Why?
[00:07:33] Speaker A: I take it back. I'm not really this mean to Kenny just right at this moment.
[00:07:39] Speaker B: Who's canceled now? Who's canceled now?
[00:07:41] Speaker A: Probably me.
[00:07:42] Speaker B: You making a photo of fat people.
[00:07:45] Speaker A: I'm not just you.
[00:07:47] Speaker B: We're a whole race, basically.
But big is beautiful.
[00:07:52] Speaker A: That's true. I agree with you. Except you have you seen beautiful? Yeah, but you're not beautiful.
[00:07:59] Speaker B: I'm not beautiful.
[00:07:59] Speaker A: But you got nice long hair, though.
[00:08:02] Speaker B: Becky with the good hair. Anyways, Kenny with the good hair.
[00:08:05] Speaker A: Anyways, tell your story about the mattresses.
[00:08:07] Speaker B: So anyway, we're doing this whole home rental thing. We know we talked. I didn't have ceiling for a while or walls for a while. It was pretty awful. But you had no roof.
[00:08:14] Speaker A: You had no front porch. Your front porch got knocked down.
[00:08:16] Speaker B: Well, it did get knocked down. Got imploded by the builder. But that's a different different story for a different day.
But we are now at the point where we're like looking at furnishings to finish out this kind of remodel of our house. And one of those is a mattress. So it's a big purchase, right?
[00:08:31] Speaker A: Because nowadays it's like a month's paycheck.
[00:08:35] Speaker B: They're expensive. Yeah.
[00:08:36] Speaker A: If not more like a couple of months paycheck.
[00:08:38] Speaker B: They're a lot of months paycheck, which is why many mattress places offer zero interest financing for up to 48 months. Those are four years of basically same as cash payments because they're so expensive.
So anyway, I feel like I should have a good mattress. This is one of those things that people buy expensive cars, and you think about how long you're in your car each day, maybe an hour, hour and a half. You're in your mattress for 8 hours a night. A mattress. The way you sleep has a direct impact on the way you feel the next day, the amount of things you get done, unless you're, ronie and I, you just team. No sleep. We don't sleep.
[00:09:10] Speaker A: We sleep, like, 2 hours now.
[00:09:11] Speaker B: Just too much going on, but much.
[00:09:14] Speaker A: Not enough time on our hands.
[00:09:16] Speaker B: Exactly.
[00:09:16] Speaker A: Yeah, that's what I was going for.
[00:09:18] Speaker B: Yeah, too much. Not enough time.
Anyway, wife and I go do our due diligence. We're sleeping. None of these are paid advertisements, by the way. They just happen to be names of brands that we looked at.
[00:09:29] Speaker A: We recommend none of them.
[00:09:30] Speaker B: We recommend none of them. We did the tempurpedic. We did the beauty rest, we did the but if one of you guys.
[00:09:34] Speaker A: Want to spawn for us, we'll recommend you.
[00:09:36] Speaker B: We did the sleep number. We wanted to try out all these different things because my wife and I, she likes it a little hard. I like it a little soft. So we got to try and find, like, the right bed, she said, exactly. And so anyway, we go and we go to Sleep Number store. We try out all these mattresses, and we get to the point where we're going through the numbers of some of these, and we walk in there, and I said, point me to your most expensive mattress. And she did, and it was great. And we laid on it. And it has an automatic heating element, an automatic cooling element. Kind of like ventilated seats in your car. Wait, heated seats in your car for each side of the bed.
[00:10:11] Speaker A: Wait.
[00:10:12] Speaker B: Yeah. Wait. It was amazing.
[00:10:14] Speaker A: No, seriously, you could put a breeze right up your balls.
[00:10:18] Speaker B: Right up your balls.
[00:10:19] Speaker A: Oh, my God. This sounds like the greatest thing that's ever been invented.
[00:10:22] Speaker B: The big bow man would love it.
[00:10:23] Speaker A: Does it vibrate, too?
[00:10:25] Speaker B: The sleep Number does not actually vibrate, but many of the other adjustable bases from the other companies did.
[00:10:30] Speaker A: Christine, I feel, hated the vibration of the car running up my leg.
[00:10:38] Speaker B: Christine hated the MSI feature, by the way, so for whatever that's worth, I liked it a bit. I just like things.
[00:10:49] Speaker A: Who knew a bed could be so sexual?
[00:10:51] Speaker B: We get on this bed, and it's great. I'm like, I love this bed. How much is it? She's like it's a lot. And I was like, okay, point me to your next most expensive bed.
[00:11:00] Speaker A: Instantly, she talked you out of it.
[00:11:02] Speaker B: And then we go to the point me to the next most expensive bed. So we finally end up on a bed we're going to buy.
[00:11:05] Speaker A: How much was it? I want to know.
[00:11:08] Speaker B: It was a few thousand dollars. Few thousand dollars?
[00:11:10] Speaker A: A few thousand, as in we're talking four figures or five figures.
[00:11:14] Speaker B: Like, less than ten.
[00:11:16] Speaker A: The most expensive bed was the most expensive one.
[00:11:18] Speaker B: Well over ten.
[00:11:19] Speaker A: Well over ten.
[00:11:20] Speaker B: Easily over ten.
And I was like, I love this bed. But that's just even the same as cash for four years.
[00:11:27] Speaker A: I can't do it.
[00:11:28] Speaker B: It's a lot of money. It's a car payment, basically.
[00:11:30] Speaker A: Free hot dogs for life. No drinks.
[00:11:34] Speaker B: So anyway, we finally had a bunch of mattresses. Kind of suits both of us and that we go through numbers. We like the numbers great. But we were like exhausted. We were beat, tired. Sleeping on mattresses all day. So exhausting. Mattress shopping.
[00:11:45] Speaker A: Kenny and his wife literally just go to the store and take naps on mattresses all day.
[00:11:48] Speaker B: The one guy, Ashley Furniture, we were laying the purple mattress back there and we were just laying there and we were both just exhausted. And we probably laid there too long. And he was like, hey, you guys look comfortable. And we were, huh?
[00:12:01] Speaker A: I wasn't sleeping.
[00:12:02] Speaker B: You're sleeping?
[00:12:04] Speaker A: Do you guys need anything while you're there?
[00:12:05] Speaker B: We were exhausted by this time. We got to go home. Let's sleep at it. Think about it. We looked at and priced out a bunch of different mattresses. Anyway, we decide we're going to go back and buy that mattress at the sleep member store.
[00:12:14] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:12:14] Speaker B: Not the most expensive one.
[00:12:16] Speaker A: No.
[00:12:16] Speaker B: Two or three tiers down.
[00:12:18] Speaker A: If you get the most expensive one, let me know.
[00:12:20] Speaker B: Yeah, come try it out.
[00:12:21] Speaker A: I'm going to steal your bed.
[00:12:23] Speaker B: There's be three of us in there.
[00:12:24] Speaker A: No, I'm going to steal your bed.
[00:12:25] Speaker B: Oh, you're going to steal it. Okay, great.
We go back and there's this lady in there with the gray hair and she looks like Tyne Daley from American sitcom. TVs sitcoms.
[00:12:38] Speaker A: Who the hell is Tyne Daily?
[00:12:40] Speaker B: Time Daily. She was judging Amy. She was in she's been in a bunch of stuff. You look up Tyne Daily's credits like they're a mile long.
[00:12:47] Speaker A: You keep talking, I'm going to look.
[00:12:48] Speaker B: She'S been like everything you've ever seen.
[00:12:50] Speaker A: I'm going to look that up.
[00:12:50] Speaker B: While you keep talking, you'll recognize her face immediately.
[00:12:53] Speaker A: How do you spell Tyne Daily?
[00:12:54] Speaker B: T-Y-N-E-D-A-L-Y. You don't even know D-A-L-Y.
She's probably done a standing like EO got her, like every show ever made.
[00:13:04] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. Tyne daley. I know her. Yeah.
[00:13:06] Speaker B: So anyway, she looks like Tyne Daley, but she doesn't sell like, Tyne Daily because when we went to go through, we were like, this is the mattress we want. We talked to Becky with the good hair last week. This is what we want. We want this and that and we want this sleep cover, this thing and that and mattress and pillow, whatever. She does it all up. Okay, here, where's your credit card? I said, well, what's the minimum I can put down on this? Because we're going to do the same as cash financing for four years. And she said, well, you can't buy that. You can't use that.
[00:13:33] Speaker A: Here, you can't use that.
[00:13:35] Speaker B: I said, what do you mean? I said, that's what Becky with the good air quoted us.
[00:13:39] Speaker A: Your money's. No, good here.
[00:13:40] Speaker B: She says, that's not it. So she gives me a number that's much closer to, like, $10,000 by the away. And she's like, this is just an all cash transaction one time. And I'm like, no, it's not.
I'm like, literally, I spent, like, 8 hours in your store last week, and I could sell every mattress in the store to you. I'm not making this up.
[00:13:55] Speaker A: This is my first basically went through employee training.
[00:13:57] Speaker B: This isn't my first day. I know all the terms on your financing.
[00:14:00] Speaker A: HR is writing up my contract right now.
[00:14:02] Speaker B: The first question I actually asked before.
[00:14:04] Speaker A: I'm actually going to make my own commission.
[00:14:06] Speaker B: The first question I actually asked Becky with the good ear when we walked in was, what are your financing offers and specials right now?
[00:14:12] Speaker A: And she gave it to me before.
[00:14:13] Speaker B: We laid on any bed. Yeah, she wanted to make sure they're consistent with the other stores we go to. So anyway, she gives me this wild ass number. She's on the phone with her regional manager, and they're like, yep, this is the price. Becky with the good hair is wrong. So we're like, well, I guess we're not buying a bed here tonight. So we go home, feels bad, disappointed, and wife goes back today while I'm at work and talks to Becky with the good hair who's back from vacation.
[00:14:34] Speaker A: She's got gray hair, by the way.
[00:14:35] Speaker B: Becky with the good hair does not have gray hair.
[00:14:37] Speaker A: No, not gray hair. Great hair.
[00:14:39] Speaker B: Yeah, great. Yeah, great hair. Great hair.
Way too nice for you.
Nicest hair.
[00:14:47] Speaker A: That's always the judge. If she's got really nice hair, she's got too nice of hair for you.
[00:14:51] Speaker B: Not suitable for Ronnie. So anyway, she offers us the same deal.
[00:14:55] Speaker A: My wife has the best hair.
[00:14:56] Speaker B: She offers us the same deal, and it's way better than you deserve. You outcake your coverage there by like, a mile and a half.
[00:15:02] Speaker A: I will punch you right in a dick.
[00:15:04] Speaker B: Here's the thing.
Becky with the good here, she offers us the same deal and says, you know what? Because Time Daily went and screwed everything up last night and didn't let you guys just buy the mattress last night, I got my third as extra discount. So the point being, these mattress stores just I don't know what the markup on a mattress is anymore. Like, I have no clue.
[00:15:21] Speaker A: 75%.
[00:15:21] Speaker B: But it's literally got to be huge. It's got to be like, the most of the price is just markup because this lady is like, here's an extra, like, $1,000 off just for your troubles. And we were like, okay, so ultimately we get a better deal than we were promised the first time. After I told the first one was wrong by the Time Daily. So we walked on. They're pretty happy, right? Like, I'm good with sleep number. We're going to try it out. I'll let you guys we'll do a little review once we get it in and see how it is, but just an overall kind of just piss poor experience to go to the same store and have them try to tell you that the mattress today, it's $3,000 more than the mattress was sold to you initially.
[00:15:53] Speaker A: I'm surprised that you bought the one from what's her name, becky with the good hair, whatever her name was. Yeah, I'm surprised you even bought it from her. With the store giving you different prices.
[00:16:03] Speaker C: What if they just did good cop, bad cop on you?
[00:16:07] Speaker A: They're like, we're really going to fuck this guy. Listen, you tell him a really low price. I'll tell him a really high and then they'll come back and you give them the low one again. We're going to sell them like that.
They got you, man.
You never thought of that?
[00:16:21] Speaker B: No. The MSRP of a bed is a thing. I mean, you could buy the same bed online, and it would cost you.
[00:16:26] Speaker A: You know what MSRP means?
[00:16:27] Speaker B: A specific number?
[00:16:28] Speaker A: Nothing. It means nothing.
[00:16:30] Speaker B: Okay, but it's the manufacturer suggested retail.
[00:16:33] Speaker A: Listen, besides Tyne Daley, did you have any other bad salespeople?
[00:16:38] Speaker B: We had some not great sales people. And the thing is, if I have a great salesperson here's the thing. I respect great salespeople because I was a salespeople for a long time, and I led a team of salespeople for a long time. And I am a sucker if you come in and do your job right, I'll just fucking buy whatever you're selling. You could be anything.
[00:16:53] Speaker A: So you'll buy whatever I'm selling?
[00:16:55] Speaker B: Well, no, you're the worst salesperson.
[00:16:57] Speaker A: All right, thank you.
[00:17:00] Speaker B: But anyway, I'm a sucker for a good one. So when I meet a bad one or one that's just, like, not into it, I'm just like, Why are you even here? You don't want to eat, do you?
[00:17:07] Speaker A: Fair.
[00:17:07] Speaker B: So anyway, so we buy it from back into goodaire. Had a not great experience with the guys over at mattress firm, but they were fine. They gave us decent pricing and all that, all those things, and it was fine. But my point is moral of the story the moral of the story is buyer beware, because they can apparently just jack up and down the prices of beds whenever they feel like it, however much they feel like, and terms and conditions. So if you don't like the salesperson you're talking to, ask for another one. Don't feel and using the guy or girl that they give you, go to a different store. If you want to go to a different mattress firm store, there's like 800 of those all around.
[00:17:36] Speaker A: How are there so many mattress stores in car washes?
[00:17:41] Speaker B: Big money makers because no one knows how much they cost. Car wash is like $0.18.
[00:17:45] Speaker A: There's literally some of them are, like, $24. A new car wash opens in my neighborhood, like, weekly.
I just don't understand it.
[00:17:51] Speaker B: But what's the markup on a car wash?
Just water and soap, man.
[00:17:55] Speaker A: You're just water and soap.
[00:17:57] Speaker B: I don't even know what that means.
[00:17:59] Speaker A: All right, well, I'm sick of talking about mattresses. Let's move on to the Week Six recap.
We did it. The Cleveland Browns did it. They did it. They did the unthinkable. They came in this last weekend and they beat the previously undivided 49 ers.
[00:18:23] Speaker B: Well, how does this even happen? I don't know.
[00:18:25] Speaker A: I'm so lightheaded right now. Oh, my God. We did it.
[00:18:29] Speaker B: Let's go.
[00:18:33] Speaker A: Okay, maybe not Super Bowl, but I'm really excited about this. We beat the San Francisco 49 ers, 19 to 17. And as always, we're going to start with the San Francisco 49 ers and their offense.
[00:18:43] Speaker B: We're going to start with the opponent. We don't play well.
[00:18:45] Speaker A: Yeah, we're going to start with the opponent, which was the San Francisco 49 ers and Brock Purdy. Mr. Irrelevant himself was absolutely irrelevant. Twelve of 27 for 125 yards, one touchdown, one interception. We actually forced a fumble out of him that we almost recovered, but he got it back. He's lucky.
[00:19:00] Speaker B: Came right out of his butt, went back in.
[00:19:04] Speaker A: That's what happened. You didn't see it rewind it went back in?
No. But, yeah, he didn't look like anything special whatsoever. And I think a good chunk of those yards came on the last drive.
[00:19:17] Speaker B: Right when they were 50 or 60 of those yards. Came on the final drive, which I.
[00:19:20] Speaker A: Will say he was at his best. I'll give him credit for that. He was at his best completely.
[00:19:25] Speaker B: And our defense was at nowhere to.
[00:19:27] Speaker A: Be found the entire game until their final drive. And then all of a sudden, he reeled off, what, like 40, 50 pass yards, and was like, I'm going to put us in position, try and win the game.
[00:19:36] Speaker B: I don't know. Because the defense played so well up until that point. I don't know what defense they were. I mean, it was clearly some kind of weak ass prevent, but it was, like, too weak.
[00:19:44] Speaker A: Too weak.
[00:19:44] Speaker B: They let him catch everything. Two weeks, and it was bad.
[00:19:47] Speaker A: It didn't matter in the end, so we're not going to talk about it right now, but next up, Christian McCaffrey. Eleven carries, 43 yards, three receptions for nine yards and a touchdown.
[00:19:55] Speaker B: One injury and one injury.
[00:19:56] Speaker A: One big injury to his oblique.
But no, I mean, he looked decent before he went out, but our defense was just relentless. They were swarming everything.
[00:20:10] Speaker B: And you say decent, but he averaged four yards of carry.
[00:20:14] Speaker A: Well, it just seemed like he was making plays.
[00:20:17] Speaker B: He was just having an average game, though. It wasn't like he was doing anything. I've seen this dude put up 125 yards in the first half before.
[00:20:24] Speaker A: I mean, I agree, he wasn't phenomenal.
[00:20:26] Speaker C: The Browns defense beat the hell out of him. He looked defeated. I think one of you guys already said it like when they panned the camera to just he was beat.
[00:20:34] Speaker A: Yeah. He just looked dejected. He had his hands on his knees. Hands on his hips. Hands on his head. Like he's just like, oh, my God, this is terrible.
[00:20:40] Speaker B: He's doing the Casper sludge.
[00:20:43] Speaker A: Hands on your knees. Hands on your knees.
Yeah. I don't know, but he did look like he just didn't want to be there where he's like, My God, I'm done with this.
[00:20:51] Speaker B: And I think the same for Debo Samuel. I know we didn't talk about him.
[00:20:54] Speaker A: Yet, but we're not going to. He didn't really do much.
[00:20:55] Speaker B: He got injured in the game, but he's another big playmaker.
[00:20:57] Speaker A: Right?
[00:20:57] Speaker B: I mean, true. And he got beat up. And then today, the MRIs came back clean on him. So he just basically was scared to go back in.
[00:21:04] Speaker C: Big playmaker. Starting shit before the game.
[00:21:07] Speaker B: Yeah. Turned into a big bitch.
[00:21:08] Speaker A: Don't start no shit. Won't be no shit, bro.
[00:21:11] Speaker B: Gator don't play no shit.
[00:21:12] Speaker A: Gator's bitches better be wearing Jimmy's.
But Jordan Mason came in in relief of Christian McCaffrey after he went out, and he had five carries for 27 yards and a touchdown. And then Brandon Ayuk had four receptions for 76 yards. But again, most of his receiving yards were on that final drive. Right?
[00:21:32] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:21:32] Speaker B: I mean, before that, he had three catches for 40 yards.
[00:21:34] Speaker A: So I think you mentioned it before the show when we were just talking about things. And this is one of the better offense in the league, right?
[00:21:42] Speaker B: Yeah. Depending on how you rank Miami and San Fran, based on the statistics. I mean, this was, by the NFL standard, the second best offense in the NFL.
[00:21:50] Speaker A: Yeah. And our defense completely shut them down.
[00:21:53] Speaker B: Shut them down.
[00:21:53] Speaker A: So San Francisco's defense is pretty good, too. They did have two sacks and two interceptions in this game. But I will say this, they were playing against a third string quarterback that's been on our team for all of, what? Twelve days.
[00:22:04] Speaker B: Six days, I think.
[00:22:05] Speaker A: Six days, yeah. He hasn't been here long.
And they also were playing against two second 3rd string offensive linemen, because defensive linemen were gone.
[00:22:16] Speaker B: You're missing an All Pro right tackle, and you're missing hall of Fame left guard and a generational talent at running back.
[00:22:23] Speaker A: Yeah.
They better have played well against us, because if he didn't, then what's wrong with you? Especially if you're supposed to be one of the better defenses in the NFL. But anyways, special teams for the 49, ers, Jake Moody, one for three on field goals, including a missed field goal to win the game. That was, as you said, at the top of the show wide. Right? And it really sucks for him because his whole family was watching. He had about 15 to 20 of them in the stands cheering him on. And listen, Sam Fran, I hear Kate York's looking for work so he can miss them, too. Yeah, he can miss them for you, too. Who could miss it better?
[00:22:57] Speaker B: I mean that jake Moody or Kate York. That kick going wild because I was so elated at the fact that we went up with a minute and 40 left.
[00:23:05] Speaker A: Oh, it was classic Browns game and classic Browns game. You're up, you're down, you're up, you're down. And then you're mad because we can't score a touchdown on the previous drive. But we kicked a field goal. And then we got the ball about three and out. We got the ball back. We're like, oh, we got it back. We got the field goal, which I didn't think was going to happen, but we ended up getting the field goal. And then they get the ball back. And you're like, okay, our defense has been solid.
[00:23:24] Speaker B: Yeah. No, I'm like, they're going to go three and out. This is the game.
[00:23:27] Speaker A: No.
[00:23:28] Speaker B: And they marched right down the field. Well, they got some help from a poor penalty, too. Officiating in this game was bad overall.
[00:23:33] Speaker A: We'll get to that.
[00:23:34] Speaker B: But they got some help from a penalty there, but then marched right down the field. And when you get into that, like, 40 ish yard range, I'm like, most kickers are going to make this, except in Cleveland with nasty outside.
[00:23:47] Speaker A: And there actually is a picture from right before the ball was snapped. And Jake Moody is looking directly at the flag that is on top of the upright, which, if you are a Cleveland Browns fan and you pay any attention to kicking, you don't look at that flag. You look at the American flag that's in the gap in the stadium. And that's the one that always tells the true direction of the wind, as Phil Dawson will tell you.
[00:24:12] Speaker B: Phil Dawson flag.
[00:24:12] Speaker A: And it was blowing hard right? And the one on top of the uprights was dead still. And of course, he misses at wide right.
[00:24:20] Speaker B: Swirling winds. Man, I'm telling you, like I said in the open, I know a dome is nice for all the events you can host all year long, but, man, that was a difference maker in the game. Being the fact that you were on your home turf on a swirly winds on the lake. It doesn't end better than that.
[00:24:36] Speaker A: No, that was phenomenal.
[00:24:38] Speaker B: And that all goes away in a dome.
[00:24:39] Speaker A: And then you know what we got to do after that? Victory formation. Oh, how sweet it is.
[00:24:45] Speaker B: The food tastes a little better. The drinks taste a little sweeter. The sex feels a little better.
Yeah. Just victory Monday.
[00:24:53] Speaker A: Man, my day was good.
But anyways, let's go ahead and move things over to the Cleveland Browns here. Let's start on the offensive side of the ball. PJ. Walker, third starting quarterback of the season for the Cleveland Browns.
Nobody starts more quarterbacks than the Cleveland.
[00:25:09] Speaker B: Browns, especially ones from the XFL.
[00:25:12] Speaker A: Yeah, but he actually didn't. Play. I mean, he didn't play good. That's not what I'm saying. But he was okay. And he kept us somewhat in the game. He didn't give it away.
[00:25:23] Speaker C: He tried to.
[00:25:23] Speaker A: He tried to. He did. We'll get to that too. We'll get to that. But 18 of 34 for 192 yards, zero touchdowns, two interceptions. Again, didn't play good.
He tried to, but he didn't give the game.
[00:25:40] Speaker B: He was the definition of game manager in this game.
[00:25:43] Speaker A: Probably a little bit below that. But he didn't give the game away.
[00:25:47] Speaker B: But because he didn't give the game away, I think you get game manager. You get to be Trent Dilford today.
[00:25:51] Speaker A: Three carries for 1. Technically, he was my player to watch in this game because my player to watch was Deshaun Watson. But you told me last week, you said, well, he might not play. So your player to watch is any quarterback that plays for the.
[00:26:05] Speaker B: Player to watch was Deshaun Watson. That was a boring player to watch.
[00:26:08] Speaker A: In this case, it was PJ. Walker. Like I said, not a great game. But he did enough. That's all we needed from him. He needed to do enough.
[00:26:16] Speaker B: I will say this. I will say this in terms of he did enough. And he had some opportunities. Things that almost went really bad for him.
He was steady back there. The game in the moment never got too big for him.
[00:26:31] Speaker A: He didn't look and I hate to throw DTR. Under the bus because we all know that situation was not 100% his fault, but DTR.
Looked like he was just a deer in headlight.
[00:26:41] Speaker B: Well.
[00:26:41] Speaker A: DTR.
[00:26:42] Speaker B: Looked like he was running an offense made for an All Pro quarterback. Which is what he was put into.
[00:26:46] Speaker A: So it was nice to see that. And again, that's not DTR's fault. That was the situation he was put in. But PJ. Walker, even when he threw the interceptions, even when things weren't necessarily going our way, he seemed composed and he seemed like he was confident that they were going to bounce back and make a play.
[00:27:02] Speaker B: Kevin Stefanci ran the ball 30 times in this game.
[00:27:07] Speaker A: The way we should probably run our offense, but we never do.
[00:27:09] Speaker B: What I'm saying is the way they should have ran the ball when DTR was absolutely I mean, they didn't ask a lot of PJ. Walker until there was absolutely, you have to do something now because we're out of time.
[00:27:20] Speaker A: Yeah. And so running the ball 30 times in the game. That's a really good segue right here. Jerome Ford, 17 carries for 84 yards. Decent day out of him. And Kareem hunt. Twelve carries for 47 yards. And I got to say this. I know we were all excited to bring Kareem Hunt back. And I believe he got the start in this, if I'm not mistaken.
[00:27:39] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:27:39] Speaker A: He did.
[00:27:41] Speaker B: Which was smart.
[00:27:42] Speaker A: Yeah. But here's the deal. I mean, am I the only one that is as excited as I was to bring him back. Kareem hunt's past his prime. Man, he looks slow. Both running and processing information. He looks easy to bring down. I just really was not impressed with Kareem Hunt in this game.
[00:28:03] Speaker B: I feel differently. I thought he looked better than he did the first week. He didn't get a whole lot of action, but I feel like he ran really hard. We got a lot of really good, strong carries out of him.
He always runs hard, and I think he was just gassed. I think he was gassed by the second half.
[00:28:24] Speaker A: Is it more of not necessarily past his prime still? He's still getting back into game.
[00:28:30] Speaker B: He's in game shape yet at all. But, man, there were some carries there in the first half that I was like, yeah, this is why we brought him back.
[00:28:39] Speaker A: Like I said, he doesn't have the.
[00:28:40] Speaker B: Fast twitch that Jerome Ford has, but I didn't think that. I've never really been that kind of guy anyway.
[00:28:46] Speaker A: I'm just a little I you make a valid point about being in game shape. That's a big deal. And it's hard to get back into game shape if you didn't start the season and go through the whole season with the in a little concerning.
[00:29:02] Speaker B: And I think especially in short yardage like Kareem has enough experience to know when you need to put your back into it and just get that extra half yard because you could do what.
[00:29:10] Speaker A: Put your back into it.
[00:29:11] Speaker B: Yeah. Where Jerome Ford tends to fall short of those a little bit. Like Kareem knows where he's at in the field, has hyper awareness around getting to the first down markers. I still like Kareem's hands out of the backfield. So I just think it's a matter of him getting into game shape. But I thought he ran really tough until he was guessed. But the thing that I noticed about he was and I texted this to the group text was, he looks guessed, but he knows he has to be out there. Yeah, because I'll tell you what, this team fought all day long, both sides of the ball, all three phases of the game. They fought all day.
[00:29:41] Speaker A: I think that's why it was such a fun game to watch is because you could see it. You're like, these guys are supposedly, according to all of the media and everybody else, these guys are supposedly outclassed and outmatched, yet they're giving everything that they possibly have to stay in this game.
[00:29:56] Speaker B: And I'll say this, this was a game that if you rewind it and play it back with some of the other coaching staff and some of the other rosters that we had over the last 20 years, this is a game that you do automatically lose every time. This game, for whatever reason, was different from the start.
[00:30:12] Speaker A: These guys came out even from the it's funny. So before the game when the fight happened.
What's his name?
The guy calling the game was like, oh, why would the Browns do that? I don't like this. They poked the bear. Yeah, they poked the bear.
[00:30:27] Speaker C: That was Jimmy Johnson in the studio, I think.
[00:30:29] Speaker A: There you go. It was Jimmy Johnson. So not the guy calling it Jimmy Johnson in the studio, but f Jimmy Johnson. F him all. And I know, Bone, you mentioned it before the show, you said. I think it actually had the opposite effect, right?
[00:30:41] Speaker C: Yeah, it pumped up the Browns team. I think it kind of gelbed those guys where they were just laser focused on putting a beat down on San Francisco, where it was like their anger was just fueled and it just created.
[00:30:53] Speaker B: And that's what it was. I'm telling you, it was an emotional win, start to finish. Never seen a Browns team carry themselves for four quarters on emotion and not have something bad happen. I mean, they believed they could win the entire time.
[00:31:06] Speaker A: And to take it one step further, I think they were actually already there mentality wise, because we talked about it. They came out with the boombox, right? They came out with the boombox. Out of the out of the tunnel. The defense came out, and we're taunting the 49 ers from the get go. And then the fight happened. And I think it just took it even further. It took it to the next level where the Browns were like, no, fuck this team. FM. FM, and we're just going to take this one. They took it. Yeah. And it was awesome to watch. But let's move on here with the Browns offense, wide receivers, I'm only going to talk about Amari Cooper. Everybody else was kind of in that like 40, 40.
[00:31:43] Speaker B: Not going to talk about your boy?
[00:31:44] Speaker A: Fourth and four, david Bell did have a hell of a catch.
Saved the day. I guess we will talk about that. But Amari Cooper had four receptions for 108 yards.
And speaking of guys who look slow, did you guys see him get just absolutely hawked? Like, it wasn't even close.
[00:32:06] Speaker B: That's why we said we would need a number one receiver, because he's not a speedster.
[00:32:10] Speaker C: It was like a linebacker that hawked him down.
[00:32:13] Speaker A: Look, I like Amari Cooper a lot, but that dude must run the best routes of anybody ever. Because with that type of speed, the fact that he was able to get Hawked down by a linebacker, like you said so easily, you have to be the best route runner on the planet.
[00:32:29] Speaker B: Well, you know what it is about.
[00:32:30] Speaker A: Because he's always open.
[00:32:31] Speaker B: You know what it is about. The best receivers, too, is the best receivers have a way of making incidental contact and drawing incidental contact to where a lot of guys that push off or shove off before the ball gets there, shove off. They're not good at it. Where Amari excels, he can push someone off with his hip, with his shoulder, and create separation where I'm not extending an arm into you. And that's what the great receivers do.
[00:33:01] Speaker A: Is he does create body control. He does the lean and then like.
[00:33:04] Speaker B: The yeah, I mean, you run almost into the guy and make them try to disrupt your route, and then you break off of him. So he does a really good job of that because he's always wide open.
[00:33:14] Speaker A: Wide open. Well, that's a perfect example.
The one that he got Hawked on, like, nobody was right. I was like, yeah. Touchdown. No, just kidding. So I was a little disappointed.
[00:33:25] Speaker C: He made a little juke move inside, right? And then he kind of had to restart.
[00:33:29] Speaker A: Maybe he's just real slow off the start.
[00:33:31] Speaker C: I still felt like he was down.
[00:33:33] Speaker A: I was disappointed, though. I was like, that's a for sure touchdown. And then the guy came. It looked almost like Amari Cooper was standing still. I was like, oh, God.
Well, they caught him, so I guess we'll keep running plays.
But I digress. I mean, he had a great game. Amari Cooper with another strong showing. And like you said, David Bell, the Venus fly trap. He catches everything that comes his way. Saved the day.
[00:33:58] Speaker B: I was shocked that Kevin Sam Fancy went to David Bell on the most important play of the game.
[00:34:03] Speaker A: I wasn't. And guy catches everything.
[00:34:05] Speaker B: And he caught it and fell right across the line.
[00:34:08] Speaker A: He was like, Here you go. First down, bitches.
[00:34:09] Speaker B: Man. And it was a dart throne by TJ maxx, whoever.
[00:34:16] Speaker A: You just called him. TJ.
[00:34:17] Speaker E: Maxx.
[00:34:17] Speaker B: Three day quarterback XFL out there. Yeah, I mean, it was a great ball timing throw. He just caught him on the turnaround and he just leaned into it. What a play to keep the drive alive.
[00:34:28] Speaker A: Let's talk about the start of the game here, though. The defense, my God, I don't even know what to say about this defense anymore. But I have a lot to say, so I'm going to keep saying it. Five out of five so far this season. Once again, high energy from start to finish, bodies flying all over the place. Defenders swarming the ball. Almost held a QB under 100 yards, passing it again, we talked about it the last drive, put him over and gave him like two thirds of his passing yards.
[00:34:54] Speaker B: And let's pause real quick right there, because if they had managed the game better, the Browns on offense on that last drive, brock Purdy doesn't get one more drive with no clock.
[00:35:05] Speaker A: We'll get to that. That's my whole sticking point.
[00:35:07] Speaker B: They probably do keep him under 100 yards if he gets the ball back with 22 seconds back.
[00:35:10] Speaker A: Yeah. And I've said it before and I'll say it again. They were confident, they were disruptive, they were relentless, and they're just so freaking good.
And if they continue to play at this level, I don't care who our quarterback is. I think we got a shot in every game this season.
With that being said with that being said, imagine if Deshaun Watson could even show any semblance of the quarterback that was in Houston because sky's the limit, man.
[00:35:40] Speaker B: This is what I said when I made my pick last week. I thought if Deshaun Watson is in that game, I think they win by multiple scores. True, san Francisco did not look better than this team. Were they a good matchup? Sure. And if they played the chiller 100 times, are they probably somewhere in a split range of 50 50? Probably. But they didn't outclass this Browns team, even down Key Players all over the field. If Deshaun Watson plays that game and doesn't have the two picks and throws for 300 yards, they easily win this game by three scores.
[00:36:14] Speaker A: At the very least, Deshaun Watson would have got him in fuel goal range a few more times.
[00:36:18] Speaker B: And even without Deshaun XFL let him down the field on a game winning field goal drive. So, look, I think this defense is.
[00:36:26] Speaker A: The real shocking cotton. I feel shocked.
[00:36:29] Speaker B: This defense is the real deal.
Everybody likes to every time a defense starts good starts well, everybody wants to go 2000 Ravens, 85 bears. I don't know if we're to that point yet. The numbers are starting To Back that up because I know you probably have them in here somewhere.
So I won't steal the thunder, but the numbers are starting to look that way.
[00:36:49] Speaker A: You're Thunder. So you're always stealing thunder.
[00:36:50] Speaker B: I am Thunder. I'm Thor.
[00:36:52] Speaker A: No, I'm thor. You're Thunder.
[00:36:53] Speaker B: I'm thunder.
I'm getting thunder.
But look, I agree. Just everything you struck your couch.
[00:37:03] Speaker A: You just threw my king of the north crown on the ground. We are no longer friends. I know that you're pissed that you're in laughing.
[00:37:09] Speaker B: This defense is really good.
[00:37:11] Speaker A: They are very good. So let's talk about some of the players that made plays on this defense in this Game. Taki, taki and JLK, they each got a sack in this game. We had a team sack. I don't even know what that means.
They couldn't figure out who that one was supposed to go to. I guess Miles Garrett. He did not get a sack in this, but I think Miles Garrett actually played well. I saw Him in the backfield. I saw Him kind of taking on double teams to free up other players the entire game. He hurt Trent Williams. So, I Mean, he seemed to be doing a good job all night. And he actually looked like we've complained here and there about Miles Garrett motor and how he just takes plays off. It looked like he was going hard on just about every play in the.
[00:37:51] Speaker B: He was so hard, he had to use the waistband trick nice and look. Dodge miles I would say that whole defensive front, across the board, every one of those guys was disruptive and winning matchups all days, to the point where if Brock Purdy didn't get rid of the ball quick, I mean, he was done.
[00:38:11] Speaker A: And it's a good thing that that's what that whole offense is built on. If it was any other quarterback and our defense had that day, it would have been a slaughter.
[00:38:19] Speaker B: And he took a ton of shots. Even if they didn't get to him before he threw the ball, he was taking shots right as he was releasing the ball, because they were there every time.
[00:38:27] Speaker A: Absolutely. And next up here, Martin Emerson. First career interception for Martin Emerson on the board, baby. So that's good to see. I mean, he's been phenomenal since he's been here. He spent time last season taking over for injured Greg Newsom. Has played well the whole time he's been in Cleveland. Huge surprise last year, continuing it this year, and it was nice to see him finally get that interception.
[00:38:52] Speaker B: He did get turned up a little bit on that last drive.
He was the one that they kind of went after. But outside of the last drive on Sunday, he's been money.
[00:39:01] Speaker A: Yeah. But I will say this. The Browns held the 49 ers to only 215 total yards, the second best.
[00:39:08] Speaker B: Offense in the game.
[00:39:09] Speaker A: Yeah. So, again, this defense is phenomenal, and we will talk more about them here in just a little bit. Next up, special Teams dustin Hopkins. Another solid day out of Bone man's favorite Cleveland Brown. Bone, how do you feel about oh.
[00:39:23] Speaker C: He looked great after that. After did he miss the second kick?
[00:39:27] Speaker A: He did. I texted to you jokingly cut him.
[00:39:31] Speaker B: It was his kick, wasn't it?
[00:39:32] Speaker A: I think it might have been his first kick, actually.
[00:39:34] Speaker C: I regret to say that I texted back, I hate him. And so bad.
[00:39:39] Speaker A: Less than, like, ten minutes later, though, you texted back when he made his next kick and said, I love him.
[00:39:42] Speaker B: I love him.
[00:39:43] Speaker C: Yeah, he's up and down. Up and down. But, man, he was four for five, right? Four for five.
[00:39:47] Speaker A: Four for five, including a 50 yarder. Yeah, one for one on extra points. Where's your confidence meter?
[00:39:51] Speaker C: Like, it's super high. He made the kick when he needed to make it at the end of the game.
[00:39:56] Speaker A: Full Mass. I know. We measure confidence. Full Mass.
[00:40:00] Speaker C: I've been riding that since Sunday at 04:00.
[00:40:02] Speaker A: Or has he been riding it?
[00:40:05] Speaker C: No. Well, I don't actually know him.
[00:40:11] Speaker A: Potentially.
But you're full masked. I got it. No, but he had 13 of the team's 19 points. And I will say this, Bone, you were almost even harder than full masked because he almost won Dog of the Week this week. It was very close.
But we do have a burning river sportscast first for Dog of the Week, which we will get to here very soon.
[00:40:35] Speaker D: The Week.
[00:40:35] Speaker B: Dustin Hopkins, the White d Hop wins. Dog of the Week. Zach has to do the segment.
[00:40:40] Speaker A: Oh, he's going to be so excited.
[00:40:42] Speaker B: Bone man, he's going to be so excited.
[00:40:44] Speaker A: Next up here, we got Coaching Stefanski, or Stefanik, as we like to call him. Look, I know we won, and I hate to get turned down on a show where I have been so turned up so far. I'm just elated. We're riding this wave, whatever, but this.
[00:41:02] Speaker B: Is what drugs feel like, I think.
[00:41:03] Speaker A: I think so.
[00:41:05] Speaker B: If I could turn the Browns on every week and make it feel like this, I would.
[00:41:08] Speaker A: Yeah, I agree. I agree. And again, I know we won. This was fantastic. I'm feeling great, everybody. The whole city's feeling great. But I did see a lot of chatter after the game quotes kind of like this, like, you got to give it to Kevin Stefanski. He called a good game. There was a lot more like this. A lot of people owe Kevin Stefanski an apology.
I'm going to be honest, though, I'm not sure what these people that are saying this were watching, because I hate to come down on him after a win, like I said, and I'll try not to come down on him too hard because we did win the game. But there were multiple times throughout this game that I was once again questioning play calling. And I'll just give you a couple of examples here. Off the turnover, when Martin Emerson got his first career interception, we started basically in the red zone. We weren't quite in the red zone, but we were like the 35 yard line or something like that.
That drive, we went three and out. And what was the first play we called after the turnover?
[00:42:09] Speaker B: The patented fancy reverse run backwards.
[00:42:12] Speaker A: Yeah.
The end. Around to Elijah Moore. That went for negative yards, negative six or negative seven. I don't remember exactly what it was.
So all in all, though, on this drive, we went three plays for negative 19 yards. We started in field goal range and we're driven backwards out of it all because we can't just play fundamental football and off a turnover. You run like normal plays to keep you in field goal range, to keep you in scoring range so you guys can get points.
That one was mind boggling to me. And then I think the more obvious one here is the drive at the end of the game, when we were going down to kick the field goal, we did get the field goal and we did end up taking the lead and ultimately winning the game. But there's no reason whatsoever we should have let the 49 Ers get the ball back with that many timeouts, especially like, if they get the ball back, but they're out of timeouts.
[00:43:09] Speaker B: That's one thing here's the thing about that whole way that played out is your defense played so well all game long, put you on their back all day long. And instead of giving them a break, where you manage? The clock properly at the end of the game and leave them with no timeouts and a Dwindling clock. You left them with plenty of time to do something and put it like.
[00:43:30] Speaker A: A minute and a half or so.
[00:43:31] Speaker B: It was like minute 44 with two timeouts, I think they still had, and unreal, you let them make it hard on your defense to finish the game.
[00:43:40] Speaker A: And it was no. You want to have things that he should have told the team. That's all you should be saying in the huddle before the drive starts.
[00:43:46] Speaker B: I'll give Stefanik credit for this is this was the first time Stefanik thought twice about being aggressive on every drive. He played a little bit of trussle ball where he was like, the punt is not the worst play here. Let's play the field position game because the defense been playing, like, out.
[00:44:02] Speaker A: But the best example of that is when they took the field goal, the second to last possession to at least give them a shot to get the ball back after that, three and out and kick a field goal to win.
Think usually Kevin Stefaniel would go for it on fourth down, go for it. Yeah, but he did the right thing.
[00:44:19] Speaker B: Screwed up.
[00:44:20] Speaker A: He did the right thing.
[00:44:21] Speaker B: So I liked that, that he did play some trust the ball and was like he accepted the punt and that was great. But because you were playing trust the ball, you pretty much said on a lot of those late drives, all right, we're going to put it on our defense. Defense got to come and make a play. And they did, over and over and over all night long. And then you put them in an ass tough position with almost two minutes left, with a good quarterback with plenty of weapons still around him and Kittle and Ayuk to make something happen, and they just about, damn, did the absolute.
[00:44:49] Speaker A: Worst position to be in an ass tough one.
No, but I mean, seriously, it was basic things that he should have been preaching that he should have been preaching to the team going into the drive. There were backs running out of bounds. We were throwing passes when they don't need to be thrown, dive on the ground.
[00:45:08] Speaker B: And those are all coaching things, right?
[00:45:10] Speaker A: That's what I'm saying.
[00:45:11] Speaker B: And I know TJ. Maxx hasn't been around that long.
[00:45:13] Speaker A: Well, and I will say this, like I said, we threw a risky pass in the end zone that could have cost us the game and should have cost us the game.
[00:45:20] Speaker B: Should have.
[00:45:20] Speaker A: And I know PJ. Walker you keep calling him TJ. Max, but I know PJ. Walker said he was instructed not to throw the ball, and he did anyways.
But here's the deal. Why is your third string quarterback, even in a position where he has an option rolling out, throw a ball into the end zone in traffic at the end of that game.
[00:45:43] Speaker B: If you wanted to roll him out naked and let him get a yard or two, then fine.
[00:45:45] Speaker A: But there shouldn't even be a pass option. He's just been no receivers. This is a run all the way. No receivers in real close. Just dive on the like, what are you um, so, again, I know we won, but that doesn't excuse these things. These are still really glaring coaching issues. And so for just all I have to say is he's still Kevin Stefanik.
[00:46:06] Speaker B: Yeah. I think it's way too soon to be calling for apologies to Stefanik about his play calling and his coaching, because.
[00:46:13] Speaker A: To your point, it's just so annoying. Every time we win a game, they're like, you need to apologize to Kevin Stefan. No, I don't. He still makes bad calls. Bowen, you got any thoughts on this?
[00:46:24] Speaker C: I feel like it's still, like, in clutch situations, something goes wrong, and it usually can go back to him. Just poor play management, poor time management, whatever it is. It's just like I don't know if.
[00:46:35] Speaker A: He'S just really bad under pressure or what the deal is.
[00:46:39] Speaker C: I think he's so immersed in the play sheet, and it's just like he's not paying attention to some of the other stuff.
[00:46:43] Speaker A: Like, I should have told him this, or I should have called this time out, or I should have done this.
[00:46:48] Speaker B: It's just the way he reacts to plays is smug. Like, when they don't go, they get a penalty, and he just has this stupid grin on his face.
[00:46:56] Speaker C: And that reverse worked in practice.
[00:46:59] Speaker B: I don't get it.
[00:47:00] Speaker A: Works every time we run it. Nobody's allowed to tackle us.
[00:47:04] Speaker B: But yeah, look, I think Stefanik is still a long way from being Stefanski. I think the bigger thing, though, is that we do have a coach on this team that I think is capable of leading men. Good segue, my friend, and his name is Jim Schwartz. He wears Jim Schwartz.
[00:47:21] Speaker A: From Stefanik to Jim Schwartz.
Can we just get this guy a statue already?
Like, seriously, how hard is it to get a statue in Cleveland? The Browns are putting up historically dominant numbers through five game five games. Let's go through some of those. They've only given up 1002 total yards this season. That's the least yards through five games in 50 years.
The Browns as a team have allowed 77 points on the season. And let's just go through those again. 14 of those points were given up by the offense.
14 more of those points were given up by the defense. But it was because they started off of turnovers, and the opposing team was already in the red zone.
[00:48:05] Speaker B: Well, that was that run by Mason what's his face eight yards out.
[00:48:09] Speaker A: Exactly. So if you take those out, the Browns defense has only legitimately given up 49 points through five games, which is unreal. They still rank at or near the top of the league in every statistical category for defense. They're number one in first downs allowed with 52. They're number one in opponent third down conversion percentage with 23.1% on third downs for opponents. And I just said it, but they're number one in the league with total yards allowed at 1002. In case you're wondering, they're almost holding teams under 200 yards per game. It's at 200.5 is the number.
[00:48:47] Speaker B: I've never seen a Browns defense play this well.
[00:48:50] Speaker A: And now they just played, like you said, arguably the second best offense in the league right now. So they're doing it against good teams.
[00:48:59] Speaker B: Well, that's what during life.
[00:49:01] Speaker A: If we make a deep playoff run, jim Schwartz is going to be the.
[00:49:03] Speaker B: Reason we do it 100%. And it's the reason why I picked the Browns to win this game this week was I said, I think Jim Schwartz probably is one of the only guys in the NFL that has the secret sauce or whatever it is to stop Brock Purdy. And if they play as well as they've been playing, they absolutely he has this defense on another level right now. Who knows if it's sustainable or not five games, right? If something happens to one of your good players, heaven forbid, knock on all the woods, knock on boners wood.
It would be terrible. But as it stands right now, this defense is damn scary.
[00:49:44] Speaker A: Damn scary. And then finally, for coaching, I got Bubba Ventrone. No notes. And no notes are good notes.
[00:49:51] Speaker B: Hey, look, white DHOP made four out of five kicks, made it from 50 yards, hit the game winner, bajorquez kept they played trussle ball. Like I said earlier, he didn't do anything.
[00:50:02] Speaker A: He didn't do anything wrong.
[00:50:03] Speaker B: Embarrassing. I think you're getting good play out of both specialists, and nobody tackled anybody making a fair catch this week. So there you go.
[00:50:12] Speaker C: Who was that practice guy they brought up to Damien? He did all right.
[00:50:16] Speaker B: He got darden. Yeah, Darden. What's his name? It's Darden. Darden?
[00:50:21] Speaker C: Yeah, I think it was Darden.
[00:50:22] Speaker A: Yeah, which we were he was one of our preseason players to watch, and it looked for a minute like he was he on the practice squad before this game?
[00:50:29] Speaker B: I think he was.
[00:50:31] Speaker A: So he didn't end up making the team. We thought he might, but then he didn't end up making but they brought him up. But anyways, I mean, the good news.
[00:50:37] Speaker B: Is that was growth, right? Because we've been talking about how bad DPJ looks back there. And so for them to at least start to say, okay, we got to figure out another solution here that shows growth and maturity and willing to make an adjustment out of the coaching staff, which is good.
[00:50:53] Speaker A: Yes. So, overall total yards, San Francisco, 215. The Cleveland Browns with their third string quarterback, their second string running back, their second and third string offensive linemen had 334. So. The Browns with all of the injuries. I know everybody likes to talk about San Francisco's injuries that happened in this game and how they're making excuses for the 49 Ers and this, that, and the other thing. The Browns were down far more players than the 49 Ers were, and we weren't the second ranked offense, and we had 334 yards.
[00:51:24] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:51:24] Speaker A: First down, San Francisco 15, Cleveland 18. Time of possession, San Francisco, 26 57, cleveland, 33. Three penalties, and this is where we'll talk about the refs. Actually, we'll wait a second, but twelve penalties for 105 yards for San Francisco. You think that's a lot. Cleveland had 13 for 119 yards. And then finally, turnover, San Francisco one and Cleveland two. So still having trouble winning that turnover battle, but it doesn't matter if you're not giving up any yards.
[00:51:54] Speaker B: Look, I just know that as the end of this game came near and I'm looking at these stats, going time, possession, first down, total yards, I'm going, how in the world are the Browns going to pull a loss out of the jaws of victory again?
[00:52:08] Speaker A: Because they didn't do it. Maybe that's a sign that this is.
[00:52:10] Speaker B: A different team, and maybe it is. I don't know what the future holds given your quarterback situation right now and the other injuries you have. Sounds like, I think it was Michael Dunn replaced Vitonio this week, and he already had a calf strain that he was playing through. So, look, this team is you're far from being crown champions. But look, this is a huge win. I said it during the Open last week that this was a measuring stick game. This is the kind of opponent that you want to play to see who you are inside, what this team is capable of doing. And you know now that even in adverse situations, this team has the ability, the potential to come together and win.
[00:52:47] Speaker A: Yeah, absolutely. And I will say, I know everyone talks about this and it affects all teams, but we mentioned it already. Why are the refs so damn bad?
Why are they so bad?
[00:52:59] Speaker B: I mean, let's go back to the measurement on the first down.
[00:53:04] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, it was clearly a first down. And then the guy a couple of things. It was clearly a first down. The guy holding the chains leaned the stick to try and get the ball to not be past it, and it was still past it. And they still said it wasn't a first down.
[00:53:18] Speaker C: And then the commentators covered for him, whoever that dude was they brought in, they literally covered for the guys on the ground, like, trying to compensate for their freaking terrible call.
[00:53:28] Speaker B: Dean Blandino came out as his own. You know, the angle we were at, maybe it was difficult to tell.
[00:53:32] Speaker A: Well, even the actual announcers, though, were like, that was the first down, right? Like, everybody saw that. Everybody saw first down. And even did you see the Browns player I don't know which one it was, but the Browns player in the background as they're measuring, he's like, what the heck? It's literally past it. He's, like, pointing at it. He's like, It's past it by this much. What are you talking about?
[00:53:50] Speaker C: There's video evidence.
[00:53:51] Speaker B: The sad thing is about that is that that's kind of the world that we live in, right? Like, we see things that are wrong that aren't right, and you're like, wait, but then people just tell you it's true, and we're just stuck believing it.
[00:54:02] Speaker A: That's where we're at.
[00:54:04] Speaker C: They literally called the penalty on the wrong team and almost started the play.
[00:54:08] Speaker A: There's a lot of memes that came out about that, about like, this one's too bad, even for us. We can't do it. We can't do it. We got to fix this one.
I just don't understand it.
[00:54:19] Speaker B: It was so bad. Here's the thing, too. Even if you want to give credit to the referees and say, look, it's a hard job, I get it. Subjective calls. You're running, chasing these big, fast, strong guys around. Try not to get your ass run over yourself.
25 penalties between a team that is number one in defense and number two in offense. These aren't poorly coached units. 25 penalties.
[00:54:45] Speaker A: 25. 25 penalties, five.
[00:54:48] Speaker B: Trust me, referees in the NFL, part time assets, hats, part time assets. Nobody wants to see 25 penalties called in any game ever. If you see something, don't say something. Yeah, this isn't an airport.
[00:55:03] Speaker A: It was just terrible. So bad.
[00:55:06] Speaker B: Excellent.
[00:55:08] Speaker A: And so in other Browns news, when the Browns started, PJ. Walker, I mentioned it earlier in the podcast, it was their third quarterback that they've started this season, and it was their 36th starting quarterback since 1999. By far the most by any franchise in that time frame.
[00:55:26] Speaker B: I'm just immune to it at this point.
[00:55:29] Speaker A: We all are.
[00:55:31] Speaker B: They're like, oh, is it 1500th quarterback the Browns have played this year?
[00:55:34] Speaker A: Okay, yeah, here's the craziest part about this whole thing, though. PJ. Walker started the season as the presumed backup quarterback for the Chicago Bears. However, before the season started, he was released in favor of journeyman Nathan Peterman, an undrafted rookie. Tyson Badgent. Yeah, I don't even know his name. That's how good he is. So obviously we should have had no chance, right? I mean, we should have had no chance in this game.
But he did call Jacoby Brissette, so that helps a lot.
[00:56:05] Speaker B: Jacoby Brissette, I don't know why.
I don't know why the Browns aren't on phone with Washington right now trying to cut a deal to get Jacoby Brissette back, because it's clear that clearly.
[00:56:15] Speaker A: We don't value picks anyways.
[00:56:17] Speaker B: Give them I mean, what do you possibly want for Jacob?
[00:56:20] Speaker A: What's a 7th rounder to you?
[00:56:21] Speaker B: And it's not like they're going anywhere this year. I mean, Sam Howell's getting experience or whatever his name is out there, and Jacobi's not going to play. And if he does, it doesn't matter for them. This team could use Jacoby in a pinch like this.
[00:56:32] Speaker A: I agree. I agree. I don't know why we haven't haven't reached out. But next up, Kyle. In other Browns news, kyle Shanahan has been very successful in the NFL. However, Jim Schwartz seems to have his number. And after another loss, Shanahan is now one in eight against Jim Schwartz.
And Shanahan seemed so, so salty in his post game press conference. I don't know if you guys saw.
[00:56:56] Speaker B: That, but oh, well, you know, this they asked him.
[00:56:59] Speaker A: They said, what happened? And he kind of explained. He's like, well, we had some injuries, blah, blah, blah. This happened, that happened. Somebody else asked him, so why were the Browns so effective? He's like, well, I just said, why? They're so good. Yeah, look, that was his answer.
[00:57:11] Speaker B: You knew coming into this game that this was personal for Kyle Shanahan. He only spent a year here, but it was one of the toughest years here with Johnny Manzel. And the guy had to make, what, a 36 point PowerPoint to get himself out of here.
And so this was very personal for him. And I don't think he came in here thinking that this team was going to do shit. And to end up on the wrong side of that feels real bad.
[00:57:36] Speaker A: Yeah. So it feels good for us that Jim Schwartz still has his number.
[00:57:39] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. Jim Schwartz is Jim Schwartz. Buy some.
[00:57:41] Speaker A: But you know, that takes us to yeah, the Burning River Sports, guys.
You gotta play tough people in the National Football League.
[00:57:52] Speaker B: You got to be ready.
[00:57:53] Speaker A: And we got to be the dogs.
[00:57:54] Speaker B: That we are every time we step on them.
[00:57:57] Speaker A: And be ready in a burning river sportscast. First, the Burning River Sportscast Dog of the Week is the entire Browns defense. You heard that right. We're giving the entire defense the Dog of the Week award.
[00:58:09] Speaker B: They are the dogs.
[00:58:10] Speaker A: Dogs of the week. 107 passing yards allowed. 108 rushing yards allowed. 215 total yards allowed. Three sacks, one interception, which was Brock Purdy's first of the season, forced several key three and outs late in the game, handed Brock Purdy the first loss of his career, handed the 49 ers, their first loss of the season. And the defense kept us in a game that we had no business winning and allowed the Browns to be opportunistic enough to win this. In the end, it was just everything.
[00:58:39] Speaker B: That happens bad to the Browns happened to them.
[00:58:42] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:58:43] Speaker B: And it felt good.
[00:58:44] Speaker A: It was awesome.
[00:58:45] Speaker B: I will say this.
[00:58:46] Speaker A: This is the best I've felt watching a Browns game a long time, even though I did have the roller coaster at the end.
[00:58:50] Speaker B: This defense is so good. They're so much fun to watch. I can't wait just from a week in, week out basis at this point. I used to just look forward to Nick Chubb running people over. And that was my high for the weekend.
[00:59:01] Speaker A: Now I just look forward to the Browns defense just humping.
[00:59:04] Speaker B: Now I'm just like, what can these guys do to make quarterbacks more uncomfortable?
[00:59:07] Speaker A: Well, it's exciting, too, because the Jim Schwartz effect, they're all like, as soon as something happens, they're all out there celebrating.
It's just so much fun to watch. I've literally never had more fun watching the Browns than I do watching this defense in particular.
[00:59:22] Speaker B: And like you said just a minute ago, this is now a good team that they've beat. This is a signature win for this Cleveland Browns group.
[00:59:29] Speaker A: Yeah, absolutely.
So, once again, the Burning River Sportscast Dog of the Week.
[00:59:34] Speaker B: Dogs.
[00:59:35] Speaker A: Dogs of the Week are the entire Browns defense. And that'll take us to the division roundup.
Yeah.
So Pittsburgh was on by this week.
[00:59:57] Speaker B: So I picked that one, right?
[00:59:58] Speaker A: Yeah. Good job, buddy. We all did.
So Baltimore beat the Titans in a close one over there in Europe. In London. In London.
[01:00:12] Speaker C: It's not my fault I have bad teeth.
[01:00:15] Speaker A: Please, sir, please, can I have some more? More gruel?
More.
Anyways, enough of us talking like British people.
[01:00:26] Speaker B: Wasn't only 24 to 17.
[01:00:28] Speaker A: Yeah, it was close.
[01:00:29] Speaker B: Oh, is that close?
[01:00:30] Speaker A: In today's games, it was a touchdown.
[01:00:31] Speaker B: We won 19 to 17.
[01:00:33] Speaker A: I mean, that's close as well. But they only won by a touchdown. They were supposed to hump the Titans. The titans is ass.
[01:00:40] Speaker B: Titans is ass.
[01:00:43] Speaker A: It doesn't matter. We all picked the game, right? We all picked Baltimore. So everybody was right there. Cincinnati takes down the Seahawks. This is where it got good. I was right. You two idiots were wrong.
Bone man is not happy about that. But you guys got me back. I picked San Francisco, and you both picked Cleveland in this one.
Kenny, you actually swung Bone Man in this one.
[01:01:06] Speaker B: I did.
[01:01:06] Speaker A: Bone man originally picked san Fran. And then you swung him.
[01:01:09] Speaker C: I swung live on air.
[01:01:11] Speaker A: He did.
[01:01:12] Speaker B: Yeah. When the news to TJ Maxx came out to call Zach so bad and be like, I am so sorry.
[01:01:18] Speaker A: But it worked out for both of you. In the end, everyone goes two and one this week, and the standings remain the same. I am in first place right now at eight and nine. Bone Man's in second place at seven and ten, and Kenny is in last place.
[01:01:32] Speaker C: Tight race.
[01:01:33] Speaker B: We're getting there.
[01:01:34] Speaker A: It is tight. Tight like a toy guy.
[01:01:36] Speaker B: Tight butthole.
[01:01:37] Speaker A: All right, so that'll take us to around NFL.
[01:01:54] Speaker B: I'm ready to go.
[01:01:56] Speaker A: I'm standing here outside your door. I hate to wake you up and say goodbye.
Let's come back to that at the.
[01:02:06] Speaker B: End of the show, maybe.
[01:02:07] Speaker A: All right, so there are no longer any undefeated teams in the NFL.
[01:02:11] Speaker B: You're welcome, NFL.
[01:02:12] Speaker A: In addition to the Browns beating the 49 ers the Milk Hunter himself, zach Wilson and the jets beat the Eagles. Rumor has it Zach Wilson was hanging out outside the Eagles locker room after this win, talking to any woman aged 40 and up that had ties to Eagles players. Take from that what you will.
[01:02:33] Speaker B: Okay.
[01:02:34] Speaker C: I've heard that rumor. It's really going around.
[01:02:36] Speaker A: Yeah. Started somewhere in northeast Ohio.
[01:02:39] Speaker B: They went to the Cheesecake Factory afterwards.
[01:02:41] Speaker A: Oh, man.
Next up, Justin Fields left the Bears game in the third quarter with a bruised thumb and is doubtful for their week seven, game. One, that's really bad for my fantasy team because he's my quarterback, so feels bad. But two, not the sophomore season that he or any of the NFL analysts had envisioned. He had a lot of hype coming into this season, and I don't think it was unwarranted. I think Justin Fields a good quarterback, but to Kenny's point, all season long, he plays for the Bears.
Yeah.
Not going well for him. Next up, Rams cornerback Dion Kendrick was arrested and booked into jail after the team's win over the Cardinals. The arrest came hours after he started and played 68 defensive snaps in their victory at Sofa Stadium. What was he arrested for, you may ask? I have no idea. But he in jail.
[01:03:31] Speaker B: That's good reporting.
[01:03:33] Speaker A: He's in jail.
He is in jail.
[01:03:39] Speaker B: We'll follow up on S. Yeah.
[01:03:40] Speaker A: The Rams have said they're gathering information, so they're just as good as we are.
[01:03:45] Speaker B: You don't just go to jail for no reason. Usually.
[01:03:48] Speaker A: He was framed, I tell you. Framed.
All right, so Jimmy G, not to be confused with Johnny G, the greatest American actor of all time by far, exited the Raiders game at half with a back injury, and our boy Brian Hoyer helped win that game in the second half. Do you remember when Brian Hoyer showed up at halftime and the Raiders won the bourbon ball deal?
No. Nobody remembers that?
[01:04:11] Speaker B: Nope.
[01:04:12] Speaker A: Well, I remember Pepperidge Farm.
[01:04:14] Speaker C: Hoyer's great. I can't believe he's still playing. I had no idea.
[01:04:16] Speaker A: Yeah, he's out there just winning know, doing big things. And the team that Brian Hoyer beat in this one, his old team, the Patriots, which leads us to the fact that Mac Jones, Bill Belichick, and the Patriots are ass.
[01:04:28] Speaker B: More ass.
[01:04:29] Speaker A: So ass. I think Bill is done in New England after this one. I really do. I mean, they're literally, what, one in five right now?
[01:04:35] Speaker B: He's making it hard for them to keep him.
[01:04:38] Speaker A: He's making no one hard.
I think they're done, or I think he's done. They're done completely, but he's done for sure. And speaking of ass, the Cardinals are also ass. Can't wait till the Browns play them.
[01:04:50] Speaker B: What week is that?
[01:04:51] Speaker A: It's coming up in three weeks, I think.
[01:04:52] Speaker B: We got to get a schedule up in here that's just up all the time.
[01:04:55] Speaker A: Yeah.
Guys, the Detroit Lions are actually good this season.
[01:05:00] Speaker B: They are very good.
[01:05:02] Speaker A: They are now five and one and look, to be the real deal, it did help that the team they were playing was the tampa bay buccaneers. And although they've been okay this season, baker mayfield was absolute ass in this one.
[01:05:16] Speaker B: Okay. Did you watch this game at all? Are you just looking at statistics? Because statistically he did have a bad game. But did you watch this game? Don't care because I watched the start to finish.
[01:05:24] Speaker A: Statistically, he played worse than PJ.
[01:05:26] Speaker B: Walker and he played better than purdy.
He he was under more duress than brock purdy all day long.
[01:05:34] Speaker A: That feels bad.
[01:05:34] Speaker B: I mean, if you watch the game, I mean, that offensive line was a dumpster mean, it was bad. It was really bad. That being said, bigger didn't play great, but it's because he didn't have a chance to vita bay was in his face, not vita vay vita bay plays for the buccaneers, but they were in his face on every I was going.
[01:05:52] Speaker A: To let you keep talking.
[01:05:53] Speaker B: Aiden hutchinson was in his face on every mean that defensive line, which brings.
[01:05:58] Speaker A: Up a good point, actually. Aiden Hutchinson, the lions, when they drafted him, everybody told him they were insane. They were like, what are you doing drafting this guy? He's phenomenal.
[01:06:12] Speaker B: Yeah, he's good. And he's transformed that whole defense and that defensive line. Look, I know it's early in the season. I think that's the second best defensive line of football to the browns.
[01:06:23] Speaker A: Hell yes.
And as far as the baker thing goes, round and round we continue to go.
[01:06:28] Speaker B: Yeah. It's the center of all conversations.
[01:06:30] Speaker A: Yeah, absolutely. All things lead to baker. Next up, the colts got blown out by the jaguars. Gardner minshew looked like trash against his former team and turned in his first dud of the season. So minshew mania has not taken over.
And adding insult to injury, it was announced today that anthony richardson may need season ending know, we tried to tell him, you can't play that way in the NFL, but I guess if only anthony richardson listened to the burning river sportscast more, he would know you got to take less hits.
We were the only ones telling him.
[01:07:08] Speaker B: I am disappointed frequently by where the browns are, where their quarterback situation lies.
God, this would feel hopeless right now if I was a colts fan. It's so bad there because I don't know what you do with I mean, you take a high draft pick on a guy that you go, he could change the franchise, but, I mean, he's going to probably miss the rest of this season now. Who knows how he comes next, how he comes back next year. And if he doesn't change the way he plays, fundamentally, he's never going to.
[01:07:41] Speaker A: It's over.
[01:07:42] Speaker B: So you're almost in worse shape than oops, I dropped my I just have.
[01:07:49] Speaker A: So many nicknames for deshaun Watson on the show.
[01:07:51] Speaker B: I just would feel really bad. Look. I like garden minshew. I think he's obviously better than he played this week. He played he had a bad game.
[01:07:59] Speaker A: But he's garden Minshew's not bad.
[01:08:01] Speaker B: He's had a bad game, but he's a journeyman. I mean, that's that's what, you're.
[01:08:07] Speaker A: Know, we're talking about anthony Richardson so rookie quarterbacks, he's in the worst possible situation now with his injury and like you said, having to fundamentally change the way he plays football. But somebody who doesn't need to change a thing and needs to keep doing what he's doing is one of the other top rookies in this draft class, CJ. Stroud.
Bad news for him. His streak finally did end this week. He finally threw an interception, first interception of his career, but the Texans won anyways, and he once again looked very good.
[01:08:36] Speaker B: And if you look at the guys that have gone, the amount of pass attempts, their first go around as rookies without throwing a pick, I mean, it's a pretty impressive list. It's guys like Tom Brady on that list, and he's on top of that list now. He went, I think, 191 or 196 attempts without an interception.
[01:08:52] Speaker A: And you've talked about it before we got to see him firsthand at Ohio State. But he's just a next level processor of information, and he just reads defenses well. He takes what's given to him. He doesn't try and force things.
I think that the Texans are going to be okay because CJ. Stroud is, I believe, a star in the making.
[01:09:13] Speaker B: And I think they finally got some good leadership down there on the coaching front, at least, and they've got some young talent around him. So I think he's in at least an advantageous spot to grow, where if you look at the Colts right now, I mean, we'll get into breaking down the Colts game in a second, but, man, that defense is supposed to be better than it is, but there's just not a lot of guys around him outside of Jonathan Taylor that are like, yeah, those are good playmakers.
[01:09:38] Speaker A: No, but yeah. So that'll do it for around the NFL. Kenny, you want to do an interview?
[01:09:45] Speaker B: Who or what are we interviewing?
[01:09:48] Speaker A: Well, something that we started doing this year is our Brownsbackers Interview Series. As you may know, being the host of the yeah, yeah, so I've heard of that. Yeah. What we wanted to do was highlight Brownsbackers from around the country. We wanted to do this for several reasons. Obviously, these people are all diehard Browns fans and love our Brownies, regardless of their record. For sure, that part's obvious. The Browns have fans everywhere, and these people show up at their viewing locations week in and week out to see and watch and support the Browns. But we also wanted to highlight these Brownsbackers organizations because what most people may not know about these Brownsbackers groups is the fact that they do a lot of good work around their respective communities.
And so with that, let's talk about the next group in our series. From the backyard of our next opponent, we're going to talk to the Central Indiana Brownsbackers.
[01:10:40] Speaker B: Wait, do I get to answer? Do I want to do an interview now?
[01:10:43] Speaker A: No, we're going to do it anyway.
[01:10:44] Speaker B: We're going to do it anyway.
[01:10:45] Speaker A: Yeah. It doesn't matter if you want to do it. Doesn't matter what you want.
[01:10:48] Speaker B: It's okay. I do want to do it. I want to you one thing first, though.
[01:10:51] Speaker A: What?
[01:10:52] Speaker B: My mom is 63 years old.
I'm doing a whole interview series with Brownsbackers. Had no idea what a Brownsbacker was.
[01:11:02] Speaker A: See, this is why we do them.
[01:11:03] Speaker B: Been a lifelong Browns fan.
[01:11:04] Speaker A: This is why we do what we do.
[01:11:05] Speaker B: No idea the Browns backers even existed.
[01:11:08] Speaker A: This is why we do what we do. Yeah. So with that, let's get into the next interview in the series.
[01:11:27] Speaker B: By Riverside FM.
[01:11:40] Speaker A: So this week for our Browns backers interview series, we have the opportunity to talk with Heather and Victor from the Central Indiana Browns backers. Heather, Victor, thanks for joining us. How are you doing?
[01:11:52] Speaker D: Great.
[01:11:52] Speaker E: Yeah.
[01:11:53] Speaker A: Wonderful. Awesome. Again, thanks for joining us. We really appreciate it. We appreciate your time. So let's just jump right into this thing. Go ahead and tell us a little bit about your chapter. Where are you guys located? When were you established? Viewing locations, number of members, those types of things?
[01:12:14] Speaker E: Okay, so we're a pretty small group.
We're probably on a good day, maybe 40 or 50 members on a good day, but mostly 25. So we're a pretty small group.
We have been around since 1987.
We have two members that actually put in an ad in the newspaper around the same time. Their names are Phil Temple and Bruce Held. They are originating presidents and they put ads in the newspaper and then met up and then started the club back in 1987. Back in the good old years.
[01:12:55] Speaker A: That's an awesome story. Just origin story there. That's probably one of the better ones. We've heard that's how you guys started. So 1987, that's a long time to be around.
Where exactly are you guys located in Indiana?
[01:13:10] Speaker E: We are in indianapolis. We've moved around. I mean, not in my time with the club. We've not moved around. We've met at Georgia's Neighborhood Grill which is on the near northeast side of Indianapolis, but we've met several other places. But this is where we've been probably for the last ten years.
[01:13:32] Speaker A: Okay.
With that being said, was there any shout out that you can give to places of your past, like where you guys had been before? Do you know of any of the other locations?
[01:13:45] Speaker E: The only one I have here is Damien's on the southeast side.
[01:13:52] Speaker A: I know they bounce around a little bit as memberships increase or decrease or whatever the case may be.
[01:13:59] Speaker B: Now, where you're at now, do they have a dedicated banquet space for you or is this just like an open bar.
[01:14:08] Speaker E: Banquet space? It's actually really nice. I will out to our servers, Andy and Devin, they're always taking care of us. They've taken care of us for the last, so they're they're nice.
[01:14:22] Speaker A: Awesome.
[01:14:23] Speaker B: Now, the both the two of you, did you grow up in the Cleveland area and move or what led you to being Browns fans?
[01:14:35] Speaker F: Want me to start, Heather?
I was born and raised in Cleveland. Yeah, definitely.
I moved here in 2006 when I started working for the NCAA. I went to Benedictine High School in Cleveland and then I did my undergrad work at BGSU and my master's at Kent. So I'm all Northeast Ohio, even though I've been here for 18 years. Everything Cleveland.
[01:14:58] Speaker A: Yeah, we know all those names. Benedictine, the Powder blue up there.
[01:15:02] Speaker F: Yeah, that's right.
[01:15:03] Speaker B: The Bengals.
[01:15:04] Speaker F: Yes. Home of champions.
[01:15:07] Speaker A: What about you, Heather?
[01:15:09] Speaker E: I actually have lived all over. I grew up in Dayton, Ohio, but grew up going to Parma Heights.
Her family, my mom grew up in Ohio, in Cleveland, and so we grew up going there for Christmases, so I was just born a fan, so and got teased horribly by those terrible Bengal fans.
[01:15:31] Speaker A: Yeah, I can only imagine. And I was going to say, as most of us are born Browns fans, it's rare that you choose to live.
[01:15:40] Speaker F: This life that's right in our DNA.
[01:15:43] Speaker A: Yeah.
So with you guys, you guys like so many other people from Ohio or transplants, I mean, I know a lot of people move away from here, but they still keep that love for Ohio. So that's fantastic to see and I think that's a big reason why Brownsbackers organizations exist everywhere. So we appreciate you guys being out there and really keeping that Brown spirit alive out there in Indianapolis to that point.
[01:16:08] Speaker B: Do you see a lot of that within your membership or is it just kind of random or all over?
[01:16:16] Speaker E: No, I would say the majority of our membership is from it's a large.
[01:16:21] Speaker F: Variety as far as our membership goes, for sure. A lot of folks who've moved in and out, a lot of them are Clevelanders and some of know come from other cities. We've had stories of folks who their parents were Browns fans. They've never lived in Northeast Ohio, but they've been a Browns fans now all their nice.
[01:16:40] Speaker A: Yep, yep. And so with your chapter, I know Browns backers chapters do a lot more than just watch the Browns and root for the Browns. I mean, that's what a lot of, again, casual fans don't really realize is that there's these Browns backers chapters all over the place, but they do good things for the community. Guys, is your group involved with any community service or charity work out there?
[01:17:04] Speaker E: Well, when I took over as president, we started doing a different thing because I've only been president for the last two years. I'm definitely not like some of the other presidents that you've had in the last few weeks that I've listened to the podcast. I've only been around for a couple of years. So we started a thing. There was a great member that we had.
His name was Larry Mccubby and he was the greatest hype man. He would run up and down.
I mean a first down probably even. He would run up and down and get everybody hyped. And so he unfortunately passed away during COVID And so we have started an award, this started last year that we give to the backer of the year and so that backer will then get to choose what charity we're going to give to the following year.
So for this year we're doing Indie Humane. So all of our events this year will be donating money to Indie Humane.
[01:18:07] Speaker B: It's a great idea.
[01:18:08] Speaker A: Nice. That's a fantastic story too. What a way to honor somebody like that is through good deeds in your community. I mean, I can't think of a better way to honor somebody right.
[01:18:22] Speaker E: Welcomed me when I came to the group like five years ago. So he is the epitome of what a Brownsbacker is.
[01:18:35] Speaker A: Yeah, absolutely.
Next thing I ask, I know you're involved with these charities. Do you have any events coming up or are you guys hosting anything or looking forward to things where you're going out in the community coming up that have to do with these charities or even just other things that you have going on with the group?
[01:18:58] Speaker E: Well, of course we are going to have an invasion this weekend of Browns fans for the Colts.
I don't think you'll see any blue in the stadium. I'm not sure because I feel like every in the last couple of weeks I've gotten an email or something as somebody's coming to town. And so we are going to have a backer bash at the oldest bar in Indiana on Saturday night before the game and we'll have Dixon there.
We will have Great Lakes Brewing Company will have some beer there, which is not normal for around here. We're going to have fourth and goal there.
We're just going to have a blast on Saturday and that's all sounds like.
[01:19:46] Speaker A: A fantastic party where half of it.
[01:19:49] Speaker E: Will go to Indie Humane for our 50 50 at the event.
[01:19:54] Speaker A: Wow, that's great.
I've already seen a lot of people saying they're going to be in the area for the game looking to go to that and I believe have you guys already sold out tickets for that?
[01:20:08] Speaker E: Oh, yes, it's been sold out for several weeks now.
[01:20:12] Speaker A: I was going to say I thought I was seeing people say I didn't get to be a part of the pre game party but I still want to meet up with everybody afterwards. So no fantastic thing you guys are doing out there. I know Hanford Dixon is always a good time and Great Lakes is. Some of the best beer in great, great party that you guys have going there.
[01:20:36] Speaker B: Christmas sale.
[01:20:36] Speaker A: They did just crap tap the Christmas sale this past.
No, but that is awesome. And I think that that event is going to be huge for you guys. And I hope you're right about Browns fans in the stadium. I always love to see it when there's more Browns fans than home fans at away games for Browns.
[01:20:59] Speaker B: So that being said, so Minshumania hasn't quite taken over Indianapolis yet.
[01:21:06] Speaker F: It was pretty strong until this past, you know, I mean, he's won two know, which isn't know for a know. They were pretty excited going into Jacksonville because they were three and two tied for first place. So they're still hanging in.
[01:21:29] Speaker A: I mean, two games is a lot for a backup quarterback to win, especially, I believe it was his first two games that he so, uh but then the Jaguars and Trevor Lawrence came in there and kind of smacked him down into his place.
[01:21:42] Speaker F: Yeah, I think they've lost nine in a row to.
[01:21:47] Speaker A: Not the team you want to lose nine in a row to.
[01:21:49] Speaker F: Not at all. It's amazing because Jacksonville knocked them out of the playoffs one year when they had a strong team, but they lost to Jacksonville twice that year as well. They have their issues with Jacksonville. That's their kryptonite.
[01:22:03] Speaker B: Things have been rough there since Peyton Manning retired. You had Andrew Luck there for a.
[01:22:07] Speaker F: While, but yeah, quarterback. They've played quarterback roulette also, you know, in terms of trying to find that guy to replace Bluck. And they've had a hard time.
[01:22:17] Speaker A: Hey, nobody plays quarterback roulette better than the nobody.
[01:22:21] Speaker F: Nobody.
We won't go there.
[01:22:24] Speaker B: Please. National.
[01:22:26] Speaker A: We're already on three this season so far.
That's more than indy. I want to point yes, yes.
But I will say now that we're on to kind of the football side of things here.
Victor, what are your thoughts on how things have gone this season and especially how this last game against the 49 ers went?
[01:22:48] Speaker F: Like most fans, I was very pessimistic about this 49 er game after what they did the week before, the fact that we knew nothing about our quarterback, I was really disappointed in our front office.
When have you ever heard of a team that's supposed to be a contender, trade their backup quarterback the week before the season starts, and go with a fifth round rookie? So I was highly upset, not surprised at what happened with the Ravens, but thank goodness for that win yesterday. It's breathed life back into the franchise. The city's a buz. The sports talk shows were a buz when I was listening today. So we're excited about this game coming up.
[01:23:30] Speaker A: Yeah, absolutely. And with that in mind and you talk about this next game, obviously, you guys are kind of in the heart of our next opponent. You guys live right in the heart of where they are located. So you hear a little bit more local radio wise and things that they're talking about. So what are some of the things they're saying in Indy right now? What's the temperature? Are they high on their team? Are they low on their team?
For that matter, what are they saying about the know, the Colts fans are.
[01:24:01] Speaker F: Fickle, but listening to the media a little bit, they realize in the national media fuming the flames about how good our defense is.
They believe this is a game just like us. They believe that this was a game on their schedule, they could win, especially when Deshaun went down. They're counting on Taylor coming back. They're hoping he's getting his legs and then Zach Moss has been a huge bonus. So that's our biggest worry. If we stop their running game, we should be okay. They've got a good fast defense playmaking linebackers. That worry me a little.
You know, if we can get our quarterback back and if we run the ball, I think we can beat them by at least a touchdown in their own building.
[01:24:47] Speaker B: What kind of shape is their offensive line in in terms of is it a multi group and is it a strong group?
[01:24:53] Speaker F: It's been banged up a little bit. They've been giving up a lot of sacks. As athletic as Johnson was before he got hurt, he was getting banged around a little.
Hopefully, you know, that will work to our advantage if we stop the run because again, I'm sure they're going to try to come out mirror what the Ravens did a little bit and try to offset our pass rush by running the ball at us, trying to ball control that way.
[01:25:21] Speaker B: Is there a lot of skies falling panic right now around the quarterback injury there given Richardson, which was, sorry, I can't talk okay.
He only played a couple of weeks and he's been hurt multiple times.
[01:25:37] Speaker F: Not really the story came out today that he may need to have surgery, which would be season ending, but Minshu, he's an experienced backup and as I mentioned, he won one game. The game that Johnson was hurt, he came in and won that game and then one of the games he started, he also won for them. So they're not in panic know, because especially with Taylor coming back. But their defense has been a major concern. That was supposed to be one of their strengths and they've given up a lot of points. So they were talking about that today.
[01:26:12] Speaker A: Yeah. We've talked several times already this season on how just regarding the Anthony Richardson injury, about how you just can't nowadays play quarterback like that, but he seems to just want to. Every time he gets the ball in his hands, he wants to run down the field and try and run over a linebacker, and it's just not going to fly in the NFL.
[01:26:30] Speaker F: Yeah, he's a big kid, but yeah, in NFL that's not going to cut it because you got linebackers that run just as fast as you and are strong and big and it's a recipe for disaster for a quarterback to keep running like that.
[01:26:45] Speaker A: Absolutely. And I know after the preseason game that the Colts had against the Jaguars, trevor Lawrence actually tried to give him some advice and, you know, you got to get down. You can't take those hits. And here we are about a month and a half later and Anthony Richardson, like you said, we're talking about him possibly being done for the season because he did not heed that.
[01:27:05] Speaker F: Right, right. But part of know a little blame goes to that offensive line. So he was running for his life at times, but he's got to learn to slide. Hopefully he will from this point on.
[01:27:15] Speaker B: And they're almost in a similar position to we are in terms know we're missing. Nick Chubb and Deshaun Watson where they're missing to this point have missed their running back and now they're starting quarterback so they're on backups.
[01:27:31] Speaker A: The state of their offensive line is probably similar to ours with the two injuries to Pro Bowlers that we have there. Right, yeah. Like you said, both in kind of the same situation here on the offensive side of the ball, I think we're probably a little better off.
[01:27:44] Speaker B: But are there expectations there that's a playoff team there in Indy there wasn't.
[01:27:51] Speaker F: When they announced they were going to start that rookie quarterback. I think everybody was resolved to that. They were going to be in a little bit of a rebuild even though their defense they thought potentially was a playoff caliber defense. They'd been searching for a number one wide receiver for quite a while. They've got some young talent there. So there was a lot of question marks whether or not they were a year away if they could do something with the offense, but they thought the defense would perform better than it is.
[01:28:21] Speaker A: Got you.
[01:28:22] Speaker B: Fair.
[01:28:23] Speaker A: Yeah.
I guess with that being said, what are both of your thoughts? What do you think is going to happen this weekend with the game? Do you have score predictions for us, Heather?
[01:28:37] Speaker E: I don't know week I said we always win the ones we don't think we're going to win. And I'll still pick the Browns every week. But I'm going to say it's just game.
[01:28:56] Speaker A: What about a score?
[01:28:57] Speaker E: We'll say 17 to ten.
[01:29:05] Speaker A: Nice. Another low scoring game, which is how we have to win this season so far.
Victor, what about you, what do you think?
[01:29:11] Speaker F: I think it's going to be a little higher. I think we'll pull out a squeaker, unfortunately. I wish we could blow them out, needless to say, for bragging rights, but I think we're going to pull it out 27 24. We're going to score a little bit more than we normally do, especially if Watson's back. But unfortunately I think our defense might give up a little bit more than we've seen.
[01:29:35] Speaker A: Well, a win is a win in the NFL.
[01:29:37] Speaker B: That's right.
[01:29:38] Speaker A: I will say regardless of how good or bad you think this team or that team is, typically it has been a weird year with blowouts. There's been a lot of blowouts this year. But typically every NFL game is decided by about seven points or less. Yeah.
[01:29:53] Speaker F: You look at what happened last night with that game, everyone thought the Eagles will blow them out. They thought we were going to get blown out. And yeah, every Sunday. You just don't know.
[01:30:03] Speaker B: It's a weird year for sure.
Kenny, you have you know, I think it's important. We always like to highlight these Browns backers organizations all over. We've been doing this interview series with the alumni, and they can't speak highly enough about these groups and the things that you guys do in the community.
As Ronnie said, I think the conventional wisdom is a bunch of people that get together and just hoot and holler to Browns game. And there is that. But then there's also this kind of very civic minded aspect of the organization and the things that you're able to do as Browns fans in all these different communities, whether you're in Ohio or outside. So I just wanted to know. Thank you from us and for all the great things that you guys do. And hope you have a great holiday season here as we head into November and December.
[01:30:51] Speaker F: Thanks. Same to you guys. Go Browns. Let's win Sunday.
[01:30:55] Speaker A: Yep, absolutely. It's been fantastic having you.
[01:30:58] Speaker F: Thank you.
[01:30:59] Speaker A: Thanks.
[01:31:09] Speaker E: We are.
[01:31:31] Speaker A: The central Indiana Brownsbackers.
[01:31:34] Speaker B: Yeah. I mean, it sounds like they're going to have quite the party this weekend.
[01:31:37] Speaker A: Yeah. I wish I was not.
[01:31:39] Speaker B: I'm not.
[01:31:40] Speaker A: I'll be here. I'll be here. But they'll be there. And I wish I was there, but I'm not going to be there.

All cleveland coffee. All Cleveland Coffee is a coffee company that was launched in Cleveland earlier this year, as the name may suggest. That's what I drink as well. Kenny, what do you like?
[01:34:11] Speaker B: Medium.

[01:34:28] Speaker B: Do the right thing.
[01:34:35] Speaker A: All right. Now, before we get into the week seven preview, we are going to talk to another Cleveland Browns alum that will be going on the Browns Fan Cruise with Uside FM.
All right, so our next guest here was Ohio born and bred. His career statistics include playing in 132 games and 77 starts. He spent a ton of time on Cleveland radio. Boys help me. Welcome Browns alum. John Greco.
All right, John, thanks for joining us. How are you today?
[01:35:35] Speaker D: Hey, guys. I'm doing well.
[01:35:36] Speaker A: Thanks for having yeah, yeah, no problem. Thanks for being here. And so before we get started, we have plenty of questions for you, but I do have to talk about an event that we will be attending along with you and plenty of other Browns alumni and fans in March of 2024. And I'm talking, of course, of the Cleveland Browns Fan Cruise. I know you'll be there. You'll be there soaking in the sun and riding the waves with the rest of us. So we have to say, being that we are brought to you by the Cleveland Browns Fan Cruise, where the official podcast of the Cleveland Browns Fan Cruise will be on the Cleveland Browns Fan Cruise. And McGing, most of the events on the Fan Cruise, we are really looking forward to sharing that same Browns Fan Cruise with a legend such as yourself. So can you tell our listeners a little bit about what they can expect on the Fan Cruise?
[01:36:22] Speaker D: Yeah. First, guys, I'm really excited. I think it's a great opportunity for Browns fans to connect with former players. I know other teams, in particular the Miami Dolphins, and I think the Vikings and some other teams have done a similar event and it was wildly successful. So we are very excited to be part of that new initiative. And really, it's just going to give me an exciting chance to link with fans, connect with fans. See some of the former players that I spent time with on the Browns. Some guys, some legends that played before me that I looked up to that I wanted to play like. And some guys that wore Browns uniforms that played in a heck of a lot of games and played really well. So we're really excited to connect with fans first and foremost. And it's a lot less pressure now because I'm not playing, so I'm not directly under fire. We could just kind of reminisce about some of the good, some of the bad, answer some questions and talk past former, current and really just talk brown shop in general.
[01:37:25] Speaker A: So I'm really looking forward to yeah, absolutely, absolutely. And we'll get back into the fan cruise a little bit here later on in the interview, but right now let's talk about you a little bit. I know, like I said, you are raised in Ohio, you went to Boardman High School, kind of stone's throw from Cleveland down there in Youngstown. Can you tell us a little bit about your time?
[01:37:46] Speaker D: Yeah, yeah. So grew up in Boardman, Ohio, like you said, just out of Youngstown. So rich football tradition as it is anywhere in Ohio. We take pride in football in the state of Ohio. So, yeah, just grew up playing all different types of sports. Didn't start playing tackle football until I was in 8th grade. My mom said I was too small or she didn't want me to get hurt, which is kind of funny. But yeah. Played throughout high school at Boardman, won a lot of games, played some tough competition, played Cleveland, Ignatius, they were in our division at the time, so was used to playing some Cleveland teams. Played Maurice Clarette against him in high school, who went on to win a national championship with Ohio State. So some stiff competition, played in a lot of fun games, had a lot of great memories. And that was just kind of a small blip on the radar of my football career.
[01:38:38] Speaker A: You mentioned great memories. Did you have one that specifically stands out from your time at Boardman?
[01:38:43] Speaker D: Yeah, really? Just the homecoming game, senior night, definitely having my parents walk me out on the field and winning the game, but just spending time with friends.
It's funny when we watch kind of every now and then someone will send me a highlight tape of 2003 or 2002 and it's funny, it's like, oh my gosh, how was I that bad? Or why am I that slow? But I unfortunately say that a lot about my time in the NFL too. So it's just funny to see some of those old clips and laugh. But yeah, just the lasting memories of playing with my boys and winning games and having fun and being from a part of Ohio that has a rich tradition in football and takes a lot of pride.
[01:39:26] Speaker A: Yeah, absolutely. And I know you went from boardman and you stayed in the state and attended the University of Toledo where you played football. So can you touch on that a little?
[01:39:37] Speaker D: It was it was easy. We had a really talented offensive line. In particular, we had several guys go Division One, so the whole recruiting process was an exciting one. It seemed like every day there was a recruiter pulling guys out of class and visiting with had. Our center went to Georgia Tech. Our one tight end was a four year starter at West Virginia at the time when Steve Slayton was there, Pat White, they had some talented guys. They were really firing all the cylinders with Rich Rodriguez, our other tackle went to Wake Forest and was a four year starter. So we had some studs on the offensive. Know, our quarterback played professionally in Italy. He played at Youngstown State. Our backfield. Went to the Naval Academy. Youngstown State. So we had a really talented team. So it was a lot of fun. And throughout that recruiting process, it was way different than it is now. Obviously. I don't know how many stars I was and I didn't have a highlight tape out there. It wasn't as easily as accessible as it is now, but really it was in between Bowling Green and Toledo. And personally I wanted to go to Bowling Green. I thought I was going to go to Bowling Green and I took a visit there. And I'm not going to sit here and try to badmouth them right now because it was like five coaches ago. But Urban Meyer was the head coach at the time. It was right before he went to Utah and I was at a game they won. They beat like, Ball State or someone and I was in the locker room after the game and I just didn't feel the love, didn't feel welcome, like I was a part of the family, like they wanted me there. And that kind of rubbed me the wrong way just because I was really excited about the visit and the opportunity. And then along comes Toledo and I don't know where I was on their list and who knows how things shook out. But I went to a game there. My recruiter started talking with me and really conversating with me and I went to a game there and it was the exact opposite feeling right away. I felt like I was part of their family. I really felt wanted.
My uncle was a professor there at the time, so I knew a familiar face, the center that I was referencing that went to Georgia Tech. His brother played at Toledo, was a center.
So I had some familiar faces. You know, long story short, I committed, I red shirted. I started four years after that, met my wife there and never looked back. Created a lot of great memories.
[01:42:03] Speaker B: Now did you ever consider going out of state or was it important to you just to stay close to home?
[01:42:10] Speaker D: Really, guys I got offers from, it was mostly Mac schools and then some smaller out of state, you know, really the decision was kind of easy at the time, the Mac was Marshall, Bowling Green, toledo was having a lot of success, so I don't recall Marshall really aggressively recruiting me.
And it was mainly Akron, Kent State and more of the in state teams, but the majority of the Mac teams were the only ones that showed know, I was getting letters from other schools, but it really came down to it was in between Bowling Green and Toledo. So I don't want to say that was by accident or that I was like, oh, I have to stay home. It's just the way my hand was dealt and I couldn't be happier. I was very lucky to be a part of Toledo. I won a ton of games there and it worked out for me.
[01:43:06] Speaker B: Awesome.
[01:43:07] Speaker A: Yeah. And then I know from Toledo you were drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the third round in 2008. So could you tell us a little bit about your time in St. Louis?
[01:43:18] Speaker D: Yeah, so right away I walked into that locker room, I was drafted. Scott Lenihan was the head coach at the time. The whole draft process was awesome. Being the second pick in the third round, it was really exciting and it was a lot different then.
It's not like they do it now where there's all the rounds or the first round in the first night, and then they go from there or however they do it now. They did the first two rounds in the night, one, so I remember my agent being like, you're graded anywhere between second and fifth round and we were, you know, it's a big range. So we just kind know, had a clear mind. We're like, hey, whatever happens, all my work, my resume is complete at this point. We just got to hope a team falls in love. And I got that call from the Rams, showed up to the locker room and we started playing games and we did not have a lot of team success. And Scott Lenihan, coach Lenihan was fired week four in my rookie year. So it was a lot of adversity right off the rip there and they were still kind of had remnants of the Greatest show on turf and all the success that they had in their early two thousand s. There were still a lot of familiar faces in that building and for me, Orlando Pace was on that line. Rich, incognito, some guys that played a lot of snaps in the NFL. So I was able to learn from Orlando Pays. Being one of the best offensive tackles in the NFL history, I was able to learn from, you know, to be quite frank, I think I was drafted to play tackle, and I was more fit for inside.
You know, it didn't work out in St. Louis. I was ultimately traded to the Browns when Pat Shermer was the head coach who was my offensive coordinator in St. Louis, and the rest is history.
[01:45:10] Speaker A: And you mentioned the trade to the Browns that happened before the 2011 season. I know you ended up playing with the Browns from 2011 to 2016.
So once again, tell us about your time with the Browns.
I know all our listeners have been waiting to hear. How is your time with the Browns?
[01:45:29] Speaker D: It's funny, I tell people this a lot. And when I got traded, it was during camp. It was right after the collective bargaining agreement was signed. And free agents at the time because I got tendered, had to sit out of training camp for like a week or something. So I was just kind of hanging out, getting ready for training camp. And my agent calls and he's like, hey, I was going to get dinner during training camp. And he's like, hey, you've been traded. And I was like, oh, my God, 31 other cities, here I come. And he was like, Greg. I was like, to who? And he was like, the Browns. And I was like, oh, my God, you got to be kidding me. I was so excited to come back home because my whole family were Browns fans, all my friends, everybody back in Ohio. I grew up a Browns fan, so I was really excited. I literally got in my car. I went to the house that I lived in, grabbed a handful of things, kind of loaded the car up, left everything else in the house and left and drove to Columbus that night. And then I drove to Cleveland the next morning. So it was like, know, eight hour drive to Columbus that night. And I celebrated a little bit in Columbus and, know, got to work the next day in Cleveland. But it was a, know, the guys that I got to play with in, you know, we didn't have a lot of team success again, as Browns fans know. But I think the best part about playing in Cleveland is I think the team and the fans share the same kind of mindset, and it's grit. And a lot of fans feel like maybe people don't respect them or they're always the underdog. And I think that's what creates such a great aura about the city, about the grid of the fans, the team, and you're starting to see them have recent success with winning a playoff game. Know, we're hoping Deshaun and the guys now can continue the season on the right path. But for know, I got married when I was in, uh, we had our daughter when I was in Cleveland, we had my son when we were in Cleveland. We played with a lot of great guys, played with Joe Thomas Hall of Famer, played, Know, some potential future hall of Famers, met some of my best friends and created a lot of great lasting friendships and memories. And to be honest with you, I think one of my favorite pictures of my playing career is I'm running out of the tunnel and just seeing the crowd behind. And that was a feeling that never got old. No matter what our record was, no matter what the situation was, the fans always showed up and supported. And that's one thing that I loved about the city and I loved about playing there, for sure.
[01:48:18] Speaker B: So let me ask you, obviously you went to school Boardmen and in Toledo. What point did the NFL become a realistic target for you? We all grew up wanting to play ball as kids, but when did that moment hit that you were like, I have the skill set, I'm big enough, I'm strong enough, I can do everything that's required up until getting drafted there.
[01:48:43] Speaker D: Yeah. So I would say it was going into my second year of playing at Toledo. So my red shirt sophomore year, we won the Mac. My red shirt freshman year, we had a great team, and we got beat up pretty bad in the Motor City Bowl against Yukon.
And I remember that first year, you're still trying to get adjusted to the new speed and just the workload, the playbook, just different terminology, the strength and the speed of the game. So I feel like I was kind of hanging off for dear life my red trip freshman year. And obviously I played well enough or they would have pulled me because I don't really remember that far back. But I do remember going into my second year and having a conversation with my offensive line coach at the time. And he was like, we need you to be the leader of this group. Because I played right tackle my freshman year and got moved over when our All American candidate, Nick Kasier graduated. So I remember a coach telling me, we need you to lead this front, and we need you to set the tone. And I did that. So after my redshirt sophomore year, I remember having the conversation, and they were looking for me to be a captain, to be a leader. And I remember the guy that recruited me was the Ted ends coach and my offensive line coach. We had the conversation in the offseason and know, you can be an NFL player if you put in the work. And I remember thinking, wow, no one's ever said that to me. I never had that thought process. I was just trying to keep. My head above water and go to school, go to class, play ball. And then I had a great individual year that year, and we had a great team year. We won a bowl game.
And then going into my junior year, it then became not if, but do you want to be a first or second rounder or do you want to be a free agent or what?
Or do you just want to kind of claw your way in there? So that was in the back of my mind, and I was like, wow, we're having these real conversations now. And I had a great year. And then going to my senior year, it was, look, you have a chance to do something special or you could just be another guy and kind of limp into the league. And I really put the work in and we had a great offensive line all four of my years there. But I really made it a point of emphasis that I was like, no, I want to be drafted. I want to be drafted as high as possible. I want to represent this university and in a great way.
[01:51:23] Speaker B: Awesome.
[01:51:24] Speaker A: Yeah, that's awesome.
Back to your time with the browns here.
I know kind of spending time with the franchise. Obviously it's more than just playing football. You become involved with your teammates off the field. You become involved with your community. With all that in mind, do you have a specific off the field memory that is your favorite from your time.
[01:51:47] Speaker D: In know, there were so many things that we used to do. It's going to be hard for me know really pin down one from more of a fun know I always tell people and it was know his book after getting inducted into the hall of Fame, but Joe Thomas used to throw the best Halloween parties and that was always a great uh that would be kind of about the midpoint of the season. So it was a great way for us to just kind of let loose and have a mental break and have fun with just guys on the team. And they would bring their girlfriends or wives and we would just really be able to cut loose and have fun. So that was always a great memory. But other than that, just going to dinner with the guys, hanging out in the equipment room, lifting weights, all the little things that you take for granted, you don't pay attention to when you're going through it. But the old heads were like, man, just cherish this because this is the stuff you'll miss. And they were exactly right. And I found myself saying that as my career progressed. So it was just the little things, traveling together, playing road games, where it was you against the opposing city, the opposing team, everyone hated you outside of the browns faithful that would travel or that lived in that city. So that's probably the stuff I missed the most or that was the most memorable and then kind of fan engagement or community relation stuff. The Browns are among the best in the business, and they have a great team that helps put those things together. And one that I was always a part of was Thanksgiving food drives. We would go to the Cleveland Food Bank and help distribute meals to whether it was churches or mission groups or families. So that was a lot of fun.
The Christmas toy drives, we would go to Dick's Sporting Goods, and these kids would just go on a shopping spree, and that was a blast because you'd see their faces light up if they got a new baseball glove or basketball shoes or a jersey, and their faces would just light up. So it was little things like that going to children's hospitals, going to visit wounded veterans or at the VA hospital, things like that, where you realize the impact that you have from your time playing and how you can affect other people.
That's something that now I don't get to experience as much because some of the magic wears off when you're not actually wearing that jersey. So those are the things that really were special to me.
[01:54:21] Speaker A: John.
[01:54:21] Speaker B: Once you're a Cleveland Brown, you're always a Cleveland Brown. The man.
[01:54:24] Speaker A: Hell, yeah.
[01:54:27] Speaker D: You'Re right. But a lot less opportunities for that. I can't just be wandering into hospitals and talking to patients.
[01:54:35] Speaker A: Come on.
No, that is all great stuff. Fantastic. It's always good to see the guys give back, especially whether it's while they're playing or afterwards or whatever the case may be. I will say Joe Thomas's Halloween parties.
[01:54:53] Speaker B: Yeah, those have come up a couple of times.
[01:54:59] Speaker D: They were they were a lot of fun, and that was definitely a day on the calendar that everyone had circled and the extra dotted.
[01:55:08] Speaker B: Speaking of, you know, inducted in hall of Fame this year, you had a chance to kind of watch his craft every day and out at practice. Can you talk about just, like, what separated him from the rest of the guys at his position?
Not just within the Browns, I mean, the whole NFL? What made that guy so great?
[01:55:32] Speaker D: Are we back? I lost you guys for a second.
[01:55:34] Speaker B: Oh, sorry. Yeah, I was just asking about Joe Thomas, obviously inducted in the hall of Fame this year, and you got to kind of see him work day in and day out. Can you just talk about what made him so different or so great?
[01:55:45] Speaker D: Yeah, this is an easy one, and I tell everyone this when he comes up. His attention to detail and preparation and he was such a perfectionist and his consistency, I think that's what made him as great as he is and was.
You see a lot of talented players come in and out of the league every day, every year, and the great ones look the same no matter what the conditions are, no matter what the situation is. And Joe, my best way to describe it was he was like a robot, so you watched him right away. And when he played, obviously now he looks like a cross country runner, but when he played, he's a big man, strong, tall, could move, but his ability to bend and his pass set was so efficient and so quick. And I think efficient is really the word that I want to hammer home, because his ability to get off the line of scrimmage, anticipate the snap count and be in the best position to allow him to have success, that's what made him so great and just his work ethic. And that's what left tackles are graded on his pass pro it's, giving up sacks, it's what is he doing? And when he played, no one talked about him because he was just lights out. And that's the thing. It's like you don't want to be talked about when you're an offense alignment, in particular left tackle, because we've seen it in the time that he's not around anymore, it could be an issue at times. So you want a guy that's going to be dependable, that no matter what the situation is, no matter what the down and distance, he's going to get his job done. And that's what made so special as a player awesome.
[01:57:37] Speaker B: I know you talked too about you had played tackle and then inside three as well. Just speaking along those same lines now that Joe is gone, there's been a lot of discussion this year with this team, with Jed Wills and obviously the rookie coming in from Ohio State, and a lot of guys think it's really simple to just kind of plug and play. Can you talk know from your own personal experience, like how difficult that is to go from tackle to guard and back and forth again to one side of the line to the other?
[01:58:06] Speaker D: Yeah, I think tackle is a completely different conversation and you wouldn't think about it, but if you can imagine their footwork and their stance, in particular the stagger that they have, it's not a mirror image. Well, it is because when you're flipping your post foot, which is your lead leg, your inside leg that is up, and then your kick foot is back. So they have a different stagger.
[01:58:34] Speaker A: When.
[01:58:34] Speaker D: You rep something over and over and over. And I bet if you asked Joe, he'd probably hate to admit it, but if you asked him, hey, if you went over and played right tackle, would you be as effective? And I would bet a lot of money that he would say, I would be able to get the job done, but I wouldn't be as good as I was or as I am at left tackle. Some guys can do it, some guys could do it at a high level, and you can still be efficient and effective, but it's not as easy to your point, as just saying, oh, he could just get it done. Let's just flip him over. I think it is a little bit easier at guard because your stagger isn't as great the different hands down, but for the most part at guard, you're in that phone booth and you're fighting in, like, a two to three square yard area, and you have a center next to you, and you have a tackle next to you. But when you're out on that island and you're used to taking that footwork and having shooting your inside hand as opposed to now you're off hand, it's different. It's very different. And the balance that you have to have and the core and the strength and just the movement that you have to have to be successful at one position. It's not as easy as just saying, hey, go over there and be the same guy, because I bet if you asked around the league, a lot of tackles would admit that it's not as easy.
[01:59:53] Speaker A: Yeah, that's great insight. Just as Kenny was. We we hear it a lot know, flip on Jones over to the left tackle. It's going to be fine. But it's good to hear from a former player that it's not as easy as you would think it is.
But no, you obviously had a great career and did good things here for the Browns. We loved having you. But for most guys, they do get kind of this second life after football. So can you tell us what you're up to today?
[02:00:23] Speaker D: Yeah, so when I left the NFL, I finished with two years with the New York Giants after my time in Cleveland. And that was great because got the snap for Eli Manning and be a part of a historic franchise there in New York, which was very cool. And when I finished my career, I knew time was up. There was no, like, maybe I could sneak on for one more. I just knew that it was it for me.
If you can go out on your own terms, that's what a lot of players wish they had. And I was fortunate enough to where I could kind of choose my own destiny and call it quits when I wanted to.
But, yeah, I enjoyed that. First year of retirement, I was golfing a lot. It was around COVID, so everybody was navigating that in different ways. And for me, I didn't have to go through the preparation that it takes to go play an NFL game. I was more of a fan. And when I left the league, I wanted to clear my head mentally and just give my body a break and rest. And I would say, come June of 2020, I started golfing because that's when kind of the COVID restrictions were lifted. And I golfed a lot and it was nice. And then it's funny, I was like 36 years old or whatever.
Maybe a couple of years younger and 35, 36 years old, and I was like, Man, I'm retired. What's next? I don't need to rush into anything. I can kind of take my time. I don't want to force anything. But I did know one thing.
I didn't want to get into coaching, and I was having fun doing kind of radio hits and kind of small little broadcast things, but I knew that I didn't want to pursue that as a second career. I was more treating that as kind of a fun hobby, a way for me to keep my mind in football.
So I spent about two years away from just doing anything, and then I was going stir crazy. I was like, I need to feel productive again. And I got the opportunity to join a practice, and we have a financial advising financial planning practice. So I got licensed, became a financial advisor a little over two years ago. And I go to an office most days, and we have a great bunch of clients, and it's kind of given me a new purpose and something to help build and grow, and I'm really enjoying it.
[02:03:02] Speaker A: That's awesome.
[02:03:05] Speaker B: Sorry, I just wanted to go back to real quick, just a football career. So draft in 2008, retired around 2018. Right, so that's ten years. Can you just talk about how quickly that ten years is a long time.
[02:03:16] Speaker D: Yeah, it was eleven years.
I played eleven years. It went fast. And it's funny because everyone tells you that. So when I was in my first three years, everybody that was like, I would say seven years and up.
It's like this old man's telling me, this goes quick, cherish it. And then I would say about once you get to year four, I think you just become like a robot, where really before that, year three, because you're so used to the routine, you're a professional at that point where you know what you need to do to get ready to play. And then it's just your job, you're having fun, but you know what you need to do to get ready to play.
So once you do that for three, four, five years, and you're in year six, year seven, you're then looked upon as like the ancient monk at the top of the mountain that people only see once every ten years.
You're old at that point.
[02:04:23] Speaker B: And then.
[02:04:23] Speaker D: You can help younger players at any position. Even though I don't know one thing about playing safety or corner or running back, I knew how to be a professional, and I knew what it took to be a good teammate. So I would try to help players learn how to do that and really just be a leader. And I had fun meeting different players from different backgrounds, from different schools, different positions that I really had nothing in common with. And I thought that was a special part of playing.
But yeah, eleven years ago. It went quick. It went fast. And these five years that I've been done went fast. At times it feels like I never even played, which is a good thing because I'm able to walk around and my body feels good.
But yeah, it went fast.
[02:05:08] Speaker A: That's awesome.
We say that about everything in life, right? But shoot, what's the average NFL career is like three, three and a half years. The fact that you got to play it for eleven is phenomenal.
[02:05:23] Speaker D: Yeah, it was a great ride, but.
[02:05:27] Speaker A: Yeah, I would love to continue to talk football for days and months and hours and however much time we have, but I am going to bring this back to the fan cruise. Here a little bit and the time that we're going to share on the open ocean in March of 2024, including a couple of amazing stops along the way. So let's talk about that a moment. What's the event or activity during this entire fan cruise that you're most looking forward to?
[02:05:54] Speaker D: I've heard rumblings of some competitions, maybe between former Legends and fans.
I know there's going to be a lot of games, trivia, Q, and A's. So really I'm looking forward to everything. There's not one thing that I'm not looking forward to. I'll say it that way, but just connecting with fans and reconnecting with guys that put on that uniform that either I was in the locker room with or I knew played in my time before me or in time before me. So, yeah, hopefully a little competition because I want to test my knowledge of maybe some Browns trivia or NFL trivia and see what I've retained, what I know about the organization and competing with fans, whether it's games or trivia. But it should be a good time.
[02:06:44] Speaker A: Absolutely. And I know that's going to be a highlight for all of the fans as well, is just being able to mingle with you guys, ask questions, talk to you like your normal people.
Exactly.
[02:06:55] Speaker B: Do you play any dominoes, John?
[02:06:57] Speaker D: Absolutely. Yeah, I do play dominoes, so I don't know if that's one of the activities that's slated, but yeah.
[02:07:05] Speaker B: Our friend Webster Slaughters, he was pretty adamant that he could take anyone down, so he's looking for a worthy adversary.
[02:07:13] Speaker D: I don't think I'm that, but I'll play casually. It sounds like if he's calling that shot, he seems pretty confident. I don't know if I'm going to bring my wallet to that game anyway.
[02:07:24] Speaker A: Yeah, but speaking of competitions, I do know that there is a competition for the Browns backers organizations out there. And basically what happens is the chapter with the most bookings will get an all expenses paid balcony cabin for two on the Browns fan cruise. The chapter with the highest members to bookings ratio also gets an all expenses paid ocean view cabin for two. All members of the winning chapter will receive a specialty dining pass for two guests and all members of the winning chapter will receive a Browns Fan Cruise commemorative Cleveland Browns autographed football. So with that in mean, is there anything that you want to say to Brownsbackers across the nation and across the world? Really?
[02:08:03] Speaker D: We're aware of your support. And I actually watched unfortunately, it was the Steelers game most recently, but I watched with the Powell Brownsbackers outside of Columbus, Ohio at their local establishment. And that was my first time being with a Brownsbackers organization watching a game. And it was awesome. I've always heard I know guys that are members of some local Brownsbackers club or get together gathering and they go to every game and watch together. And I've always heard about it. But until you join and watch a game with them, you realize how special it was. And it was really cool to be amongst fans that are supporting. I think it's so cool that there's clubs in England, to your point, across the pond, all corners of the country. I think that's very cool. The Browns fans run deep and there's a lot of them and they are owed a winning team and they deserve a winning team. And we think that there's one on the field currently.
[02:09:12] Speaker A: Awesome. Well, hey, John, we really appreciate you joining us today. We will be catching up more on the Fan Cruise. We have plenty more stories to tell, I'm sure.
[02:09:24] Speaker B: Real quick, just thoughts on I mean, obviously the team's been a little bit up.
[02:09:28] Speaker A: Forget about this.
[02:09:29] Speaker B: A little bit up, a little bit down this year.
Deshaun's been out of the lineup a little bit. What are your thoughts kind of on? Is this team meeting your expectations?
Do you think it's a playoff run here in this team yet still?
[02:09:42] Speaker D: Yeah, I do. The fact that they're 500 right now going into the buy, I think they're in a good spot.
You look around this division in particular, and we saw how Cincinnati started. They were able to take care of business there. And look, they were ready to could you imagine being in Cincinnati? They were ready to jump overboard. It looked like it was all gloom and doom. And then they showed flashes of life over the weekend and got back to where we were kind of expecting them to be. Unfortunately, the Browns lost the first battle between them and the Steelers and the Ravens. But look, right now they play each of those divisional opponents one more time throughout the year. If they handle business there, they're going to be in the mix. So they just got to take care of business in the division. That's the easiest path to the playoffs. And other than that, they have a really talented 49 ers team coming in here next weekend. And we all kind of saw what they did to Dallas Sunday night. But look, this is the NFL. The 49 ers are traveling here, playing on East Coast time, and it'll be ten in the morning, west coast time when they're getting ready to go. And let's see, maybe they'll be a little bit more flat coming off a big win and the Browns are rested. I do like the defense. I think that they'll have kind of a get right game coming back and I think that they're hungry and they want to prove that they can carry this team or help this team win. If the running game isn't there or if the Browns are struggling to score offensively, I think the defense knows that they're talented enough to at least take the ball away and create a short field or more opportunities. And guys, it comes down to the play of Deshaun Watson and he's shown that he's the player that got the contract and I think he still has that talent. So if Kevin Stefanski and the Browns offensive coaches can put a good game plan together and they don't turn the ball over, they protect and get a little bit of a run game going, I still think they could be very dangerous going into the middle part of the.
[02:11:54] Speaker A: Said. Well said. And it is nice that we have that defense that we can lean on in the absence of Nick Chubb the rest of the season.
But again, John, like I said, it's great talking to you. It was wonderful having you on the show.
We expect to catch up with you on the Fan cruise in March of 2024. Do another interview, hear a few more stories, get those out for the people. But again, pleasure having you. We appreciate it and thanks for joining us.
[02:12:24] Speaker D: Absolutely. Thank you guys for having me. And look forward to catching up on the cruise ship and meeting some fans.
[02:12:30] Speaker B: All.
[02:12:42] Speaker A: Hey.
[02:12:43] Speaker D: This is former Cleveland Brown John Greco. You're listening to Burning River Sportscast. Go Brown.
[02:12:56] Speaker A: Man good talking to, huh?
[02:12:59] Speaker B: John is the goat.
[02:13:01] Speaker A: I think everybody we interview you think is the goat. Every interviewee we have on here is the goat.
[02:13:06] Speaker B: Look, let me say this.
Every week I'm surprised at the stories that we get told by these guys. And it's not like we don't know them or their backstories or where they came from, where they played. And we know that a lot of them were super tremendous athletes in high school and college.
But the stories these guys have to tell are just mind boggling. And if you're not listening to this series and just enjoying every minute of it, you're wrong. You're wrong. And you should buy tickets to the pancruze so you can hear them yourself because we're going to do this all over again, but with a whole bunch of new stories.
[02:13:46] Speaker A: You know what's better than hearing these stories from these Browns alumni and Browns legends on YouTube?
[02:13:52] Speaker B: Only thing that's better is probably sharks in the ocean or hearing them in person. Hearing them in person would be better. And you could do that on a.
[02:13:59] Speaker A: Browns fan cruise but John Greco, man, we'll have to have him back on the show soon. Yeah.
[02:14:03] Speaker B: Look, John's just one of those guys that I think is very thoughtful and intuitive and obviously has tremendous experience playing in the NFL.
[02:14:13] Speaker A: I really appreciated the insight on switching offensive linemen because people don't think about that. And you think like, oh, it's just offensive lineman. You should know what he's doing. But you have to completely learn something backwards.
[02:14:24] Speaker B: And it's like clowns like us can make assumptions about that and talk about it. And we do.
[02:14:28] Speaker A: Who is this clown?
[02:14:29] Speaker B: Because we're opinionated and we think we're important, but we're not. But John was important and John's opinion does matter. So when you hear it from him, you go, oh, that does make sense. So that's what's cool.
[02:14:41] Speaker A: But that'll take us to the week seven preview.
[02:14:49] Speaker B: My opinions are almost never wrong, though.
[02:14:51] Speaker A: Your opinions are almost always wrong. This week we have the Indianapolis Colts, as we've said several times so far and I know, Kenny, I know, I know, I know you already previewed the matchup last week. I know I did, but I don't give a shit. We're going to do it the right way. So real quick, before I get started with the things that are important, do you have anything that you'd like to talk about as far as opposition research or position matchups?
[02:15:15] Speaker B: Look, I just think that the biggest.
[02:15:17] Speaker A: Thing is I like that you just accepted all that. You just accepted that I shit on you and you kept going.
[02:15:21] Speaker B: Yeah, I don't care anymore. You talking to me is kind of like the Browns starting a new quarterback each week.
[02:15:27] Speaker A: It just happens. And I just that's how my wife use it. No, she doesn't. But.
[02:15:36] Speaker B: These guys are a little bit banged up right now.
But obviously loss of a quarterback is big. Garden rinshu I do think is better than people give him credit for. So I wouldn't be surprised if he played really well against us. Jonathan Taylor we all know the story there.
[02:15:54] Speaker A: We all know you got minshew fever.
[02:15:55] Speaker B: Yeah, look, I got love his mustache. I'm going to shave it just to look like him this week.
[02:15:59] Speaker A: Please do.
[02:16:01] Speaker B: Jonathan Taylor look, we don't know what he's going to do because he's been off football for weeks and weeks and weeks was supposed to be traded and then didn't get traded. Zach Moth stepped up in his absence. I think they got Trey Sermon back there as well and they gave him a contract. Anyway, that running back room is good and it's probably the highlight of their offense. But just like I said earlier, they haven't surrounded their young quarterback with a lot of great talent. So I think on offense, they're just really questionable in terms of playmaking. They did bring in Josh Downs, who's like the speedy rookie that's supposed to be pretty good, but he's really small I think Mackenzie as well is really small. I think they're both like five, eight type guys. Michael Pittman's. A big body. Alex Pierce is a big body, but Alex Pierce is you know, I think Michael Pittman and Josh Downs are like the two weapons they could use against you, but neither one of them is prolific. So I think Gardner Minshew has his work cut out for him. This defense has a couple of good veterans out there. DeForest Buckner feels like he's been playing football a lot longer than he has, but he kind of anchors that front and Shaquille Leonard and Zayer Franklin in the backfield there and they've got some big injuries to their secondary as well. So when you look out at the guys that are playing secondary for them this week, you're not going to see a lot of names you recognize because those guys are going to be on the bench.
[02:17:22] Speaker A: Yeah, sorry, I fell asleep there for a second.
[02:17:24] Speaker B: Oh, you're welcome.
That's because I previewed this game last.
[02:17:31] Speaker A: Mean we'll get into some of these position matchups that I had highlighted. You talked a lot about Gardner Minshew and that was one of mine. Just the Browns defense versus Gardner Minshew. Obviously the Browns defense has more or less embarrassed every quarterback that has been put in their path, even when we've lost.
The quarterbacks in particular have had pretty subpar games and so this isn't something that's just coming from the front seven of the Cleveland Browns. It's like the entire defense, the secondary has shut down pretty much every receiver that we've played and now we get, you know, like you said, I don't think he's a scrub or anything like that, but he's no Joe Burrow. He's no Lamar Jackson. And for all the people who think that he's elite, he's no Purdy even.
[02:18:18] Speaker B: He might be Brock Purdy.
[02:18:20] Speaker A: Maybe. I guess time will tell. But I'm just saying I like our chances in this to again embarrass another quarterback and the only question is how much is the Browns defense going to feast on Gardner Minshew? This up.
Everybody should like this one. I have Jed Wills versus anyone lined up against him and it seems like this is all kind of starting to come to a head for the Cleveland Browns. Trade talks are happening. It seems like coaches in front office are finally fed up with him.
My only question is, is he going to continue to be asked or is he going to try and save his job and actually block somebody?
[02:19:01] Speaker B: This week I was trying so hard to watch Jed on Sunday and find something good redeemable about his play.
[02:19:13] Speaker A: It's like every third play he just completely is nowhere to be found.
[02:19:17] Speaker B: And I kept looking at it going, why is he turned around and watching the play?
Your left tackle can't watch the game. No, he has to play the game.
[02:19:27] Speaker A: Maybe that's the problem. He thinks he's a. Spectator.
[02:19:30] Speaker B: I will say there is some talent there because he's got some speed for his size. He's athletic. So I don't know if it's a mental thing with him or what, but on run plays, he gets out in front and can do some damage, but.
[02:19:47] Speaker A: It'S probably the only thing keeping him on the team.
[02:19:49] Speaker B: But I think he's got a six inch problem, and it's not in his pants, it's in his head.
Because I just think that he gets.
[02:19:57] Speaker A: I don't give him a lot of credit. There six inches, I guess he is like six, seven.
[02:20:00] Speaker B: I mean, we had that big play that he wrecked because he was downfield on the screen beforehand.
[02:20:07] Speaker A: It wasn't even close. Like, what are you doing?
[02:20:09] Speaker B: It was a huge play for us and got called back. But it's just that and if you're watching the play, something inside of that six inches should be like, that's not your job.
[02:20:20] Speaker A: Yeah, you would think. You would think, but that's why I put him on here. Like I said, will he continue to be asked or will he save his job? Nobody knows.
The trade deadline is fast approaching, and we'll get our answer sooner than later.
[02:20:34] Speaker B: And to be fair, I know we talked about Garrett Bowles last week in Denver.
Look, I don't even watch Denver play at all this year. They're not very good. So if you bring in a guy like Garrett Bowles, maybe it's just change for change sake, and maybe that's good.
[02:20:47] Speaker A: I've watched Denver. I make fun of Russell Wilson week in and week out because he's washed, loves him.
[02:20:52] Speaker B: Is Garrett bowles. Good.
[02:20:54] Speaker A: No.
[02:20:56] Speaker B: So I don't know. Like, if you bring in Garrett Bowles, does that solve the Jed Wills problem? What solves the Jed Wills problem?
[02:21:01] Speaker A: But I don't think you're asking the wrong question.
[02:21:04] Speaker B: Do you have a Garrett bowles problem?
[02:21:06] Speaker A: Then we're not asking if he's good. We're asking if he's better than Jed Wills.
What's the answer there?
[02:21:13] Speaker B: I don't know. Have you seen Denver Play? They're one in five or whatever.
[02:21:16] Speaker A: That's fair. But anyways, as a team, the Colts are three and three right now. They're coming off a bad loss against the Jaguars. Their starting quarterback is hurt and maybe out for the season. They're playing their backup. They're just an average to lower half the league and team in most stat categories.
It's a game that should set up well for the Browns. However, a word of caution in this one, and we'll get to picks here soon. But it seems like the type of game the Browns historically lose, it feels.
[02:21:44] Speaker B: Like a trap game.
[02:21:45] Speaker A: Yeah, the ones they are supposed to win are the ones that they typically lose. But I know Kenny thinks the culture you mentioned it last week in your game breakdown. He think the cults are a lot tougher than most people. Give them credit, you know, we'll talk about it in a minute, but will the Browns take care of business or will they be trapped in this game? So before we get to that in our picks, kenny, you got the injury report for us?
[02:22:12] Speaker B: Yeah. So a couple of things. Like I said, they have some corners free. Safety. Daniel Scott Dallas flowers on the IR So that's not good there. Janard Avery on the IR.
Alec Pierce, questionable for this week. Their tight end, Kylan Grantson, questionable for this week. Anthony Richardson obviously is dead, basically.
And then Braden Smith is one of their offensive tackles, is listed as out as of today.
Alex Pierce, I think, will be back.
Looks like he has a right shoulder injury that happened during the Jaguars game, but outside of that, that's most of the all the other guys were injured earlier in the year from Indianapolis.
[02:23:01] Speaker A: And what about the Browns?
[02:23:02] Speaker B: And with the Browns amazingly relatively healthy coming out of this week's game against a tough 49 ers team, deshaun Watson obviously still listed out. We have no idea. Still.
[02:23:12] Speaker A: I think that's still the we do have no idea. I think that the media painted a doom and gloom this past week, but I've seen at least in social media posts both from kind of players on the Browns and Deshaun Watson himself, which take that for what it is. He said he was playing that first week that he missed, but a lot of signs are pointing to him suiting up. So we'll monitor that.
[02:23:35] Speaker D: Yeah.
[02:23:35] Speaker B: I mean, I think it's just the worst communication loop in the history of the NFL right now. The news on Deshaun Watson, so we'll see what happens there. Joel Boltonia obviously was out with the Capstrain, first game ever missed. Yeah, he had a streak going like Joe Thomas. That was pretty impressive. But not some more. Not anymore.
Cedric Tillman actually is listed out, and I don't have a reason why or an injury like report on him. He's just he was out yesterday, out today, and then Anthony Walker was like.
[02:24:06] Speaker A: A foot injury or something.
[02:24:07] Speaker B: Anthony Walker was a late scratch yesterday due to a concussion.
So he's questionable, but depending on how he comes out of the concussion protocol, I'm likely to play. So that's where we're at from Brown's injuries right now. I mean, we'll see. I think Deshaun Watson is the big one there that we're all going to continue to watch.
[02:24:26] Speaker A: Yep. And so the final thing before we get into our a player to watch, I will start this week, my player to watch in this game is going to be Martin Emerson. And what was Bones quote he did? I have seen the top of the mountain, and it is good.
[02:24:40] Speaker C: And it is good.
[02:24:41] Speaker A: There you go. And so Martin Emerson got his first pick of his career this past week. I want to know if it's going to fuel him.
I think we see another big game from him and possibly I'm not even saying possibly he's going to get another pick in this one. He's seen the top of the mountain and it is good. And he will remain on the top of the mountain with another pick. MJ. Emerson, my guy to watch this week.
Bone, bone bound.
[02:25:05] Speaker C: All right, so this past game I got excited for a lot of plays, but one in particular was an end around to Marquise Goodwin, and that dude looked fast. I mean, he almost broke it around the corner there and it's pretty exciting. I kind of want to see them get him the ball and see him break one this week.
[02:25:23] Speaker A: He was the one at one point. I mean, he's a little bit older now, but he had like Olympic speed at one point, didn't he?
[02:25:27] Speaker C: Yeah, they called him a former Olympian, so I didn't realize that, but I didn't look into it either. But, yeah, get the ball in his hands and hopefully it's not too much of a gimmicky play, but I like it.
[02:25:38] Speaker A: Marquise Goodwin. Nice. Kenny, who you got?
[02:25:45] Speaker B: I'm going to go creep Hunt this week. I think third week back I called.
[02:25:48] Speaker A: Him out and you're saying he's going to rebound, is going to have a big game. Well, not rebound. He didn't have a bad game.
[02:25:53] Speaker C: But hunt bunch.
[02:25:54] Speaker B: I think Kareem Hunt his third week back, starting to feel comfortable in the offense, starting to get his legs under him a little bit. He had twelve carries for almost 50 yards last week. Jerome Ford played well in his own right, had 17 for over 80. So I just think it's important for this team, regardless of who the quarterback is, and Deshaun's been out and hasn't played well when he's played, when he's been in. TJ. Maxx was fine this week. But either one of those guys that plays needs a solid running game, I think, to take the pressure off of them. This Colts defense is supposed to be the strength of their team. So if there's going to be a matchup somewhere that's going to be a problem, I think it's on our offense versus their defense, and a running game can help that. So I just think that Kareem is finally probably at a point now where they trust him a little more. He started that game, like you mentioned earlier in the show, they wanted to give some experience to PJ. Walker back there in pass pro, but I think that as he gets more and more his feet under him, I think he's going to be somebody to continue to watch throughout this year. And obviously, he was a guy that led the league in rushing before, so there's talent in there and it's just a matter of how many carries he gets and opportunities he gets.
[02:27:01] Speaker A: Nice. I like it. So that's our players to watch, and that takes us to the king of the north.
Anyone doesn't know by now this is our year long AFC North pickup competition. At the end of the season, whoever comes in last place gets what?
[02:27:34] Speaker C: Punished.
[02:27:35] Speaker A: Punished. The punisher.
In the offseason this year, Kenny had a gross of eggs thrown at him by fans in the munilot. Quit knocking my goddamn crown over, you son of a bitch. I will fuck you up.
That is my crown because I am the King of the north. And we haven't figured out the punishment for this year yet, but we're getting close and we won't.
[02:27:58] Speaker B: Loser gets his eyes pecked out by a crow.
[02:28:00] Speaker A: No, that's not it. That's not the one.
[02:28:02] Speaker B: Come on.
[02:28:02] Speaker A: No.
[02:28:03] Speaker B: Don't be a wussy.
[02:28:04] Speaker A: What do you think this is, medieval times?
[02:28:07] Speaker C: Fire ant mitten?
[02:28:10] Speaker A: What the hell is happening?
All right, so while these idiots are thinking up dumb punishments, let's go ahead and get into King of the north. First things first, I want to remind everybody that I am the reigning defending King of the north. Don't touch my crown, you son of a bitch. I will put it on my head.
[02:28:28] Speaker B: Oh, jeez.
[02:28:29] Speaker A: And Kenny, as always, is in last place because that's the only place he likes to be in. And in case anyone hasn't been following along, we've added our trusty bordo Bone Man to the competition this year.
Let's remind everyone what the current standings are, if we will. I am sitting at eight and nine. We're all doing really bad. We're all under 500, which is not good. But I'm at eight and nine. Bone Man's at seven and ten. And Kenny Thunder is sitting at six and eleven.
So let's get into this week's games. Cincinnati is on their buy, so obviously no game there. We all get a win. It doesn't count as a win, but we all get a win.
Steelers come out of their own by and they face the Rams in California this week. Kenny, who do you got?
[02:29:13] Speaker B: I knew were going to come in first on this one. This is, I think, the toughest game this week to pick.
[02:29:18] Speaker A: You've been a Steelers hater this year, so what are you doing?
[02:29:22] Speaker B: I know, but that's burned me a couple of has.
[02:29:24] Speaker A: It has.
[02:29:26] Speaker B: Rams are home. I'm going to go Rams for no other reason than the Steelers are just bad and the Rams are at home.
This is a game that the Steelers could easily mean. They're coming out of a bioweek. Mike Tomlin probably has a team well rested and ready to go. They've had two weeks to prepare for this team, but there's just so little talent on the team, it's hard to pick them.
[02:29:49] Speaker A: You're not wrong. You're not wrong, bone man, who do you got in this one?
[02:29:54] Speaker C: I'm picking the steelers.
Their defense is good and I feel like, yeah, coming out of the buy, they just win in stupid ways and I think they're going to win in a stupid way. And I don't know what it is, but it's going to happen.
[02:30:08] Speaker A: Bone man's take. They win in a stupid way.
Is it happening again?
Is this a weekly thing on our show now we have no just as soon as somebody says something. I've been swung. You've swung me.
You've swung me.
[02:30:28] Speaker B: Look, Mike Tomlin's had two weeks to prepare for.
[02:30:32] Speaker C: California and it's not like the Rams are good, has nice weather.
[02:30:37] Speaker A: So you're officially going with the Steelers?
[02:30:38] Speaker B: Yeah, I'm going with Steelers.
[02:30:39] Speaker A: Fuck it.
All right. I'm going to go with the Rams in this one. They're at home. They're coming off not that the Cardinals are good, but they're coming off a lopsided win against the Just.
I like them in this one home game. California, I don't know.
[02:30:56] Speaker B: Steelers is at California.
[02:30:58] Speaker A: Here. So I got the Rams. So we differ in that one. Ravens are at home against a team that is red hot like me this season in the Lions. Bone man, who do you got?
[02:31:08] Speaker C: I got the lions. Bone man's got I think Kenny said it earlier that he thinks they got the second best D line in the league and I'm with them there. Hot take.
Their coaches are badass and their team's playing really good right now.
[02:31:22] Speaker A: There you go.
[02:31:23] Speaker B: I'm just going to third what you guys all said because I'm right there with you.
[02:31:25] Speaker A: All right. So Lions across the board because I, too, pick the Lions.
And then finally we got our Brownies traveling to Indianapolis to take on the Colts at Lucas Oil stadium.
I'll start this one. I'm going to take the Cleveland Browns 24 to 13. I think we're just better end of conversation, Kenny.
[02:31:49] Speaker B: I think this is a hard game to pick, too, because I don't know who's playing quarterback for the Browns. That's what makes it hard. Nobody knows, man.
I can't pick against the Browns after the way the defense played on Sunday. I'll pick Browns to win.
I just think the score is almost impossible to pick until you know who the quarterback is. I think it's a two score game or more if Deshaun plays. I think it's a really tight game, a two or three point game if TJ. Maxx plays. So let's call it 23 21, Browns.
[02:32:27] Speaker A: All right. And Bone man, who you got?
[02:32:30] Speaker C: I got Cleveland 23 ten.
[02:32:35] Speaker A: Nice.
[02:32:36] Speaker C: I think they're going to get to Gardner, put a little pressure on them and make them make some poor decisions.
[02:32:42] Speaker A: So we think it's going to be a solid win here.
[02:32:45] Speaker B: I am scared to death of this game. I am scared to death of this trap game. If they didn't play, if they didn't just beat the 49 ers as it be five and I would have picked Indianapolis this week. But I can't pick against that defense right now.
[02:32:56] Speaker A: They're just well, if we lose the trap game, you could go ahead and call in to the believers forecast hot take.
[02:33:02] Speaker B: Hotline talk about why is the fancy.
[02:33:05] Speaker A: So trash yeah, talk about that. Talk about how could you lose a trap game to the Indianapolis Colts coming off a big win against the 49? Ers talk about anything. I don't give a shit anymore.
[02:33:14] Speaker B: We'll take.
[02:33:15] Speaker A: Talk about something. We'll take cold takes, hot takes. Cold takes, warm takes, Lukewarm takes. It doesn't matter.
[02:33:20] Speaker C: We want hot takes.
[02:33:21] Speaker A: We want hot takes.
[02:33:22] Speaker B: We want hot takes.
[02:33:23] Speaker A: We want hot takes. We want hot takes. 330-227-8080. 330-227-8080. Phone, man 3302-2780-8033-0227-8.
Operators are not standing by. And be sure to check out our gear WW dot Thetappinmedia.com shop. And that'll do it for us. Kenny, what can we expect next week?
[02:33:47] Speaker B: Let's keep it rolling. Browns win against the Colts and things look good. Nobody gets hurt. Everything's great. Deshaun comes back, plays his balls off.
I don't even got to make a joke about that.
Then we will look ahead to the Seattle Seahawks, which will be this one's in Seattle, right? They got to make the trip out west to Seattle, so that'll be interesting because that's just a tough place to play for East Coast teams.
But we will follow that up with another interview with the Browns Backers chapter, the Seattle Browns Backers. And we will have another interview with the Browns alumni. Joining us on Cleveland Browns Fan Cruise, the one and only Greg Pruitt. So look forward to that.
[02:34:31] Speaker A: Do it, Pruitt.
[02:34:33] Speaker B: Do it, Pruit.
[02:34:35] Speaker A: And don't forget to check us out on social media. Tapin'media is on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter at the Tapin'media and Burning River Sportscast. [02:34:58] Speaker B: Facts for days.
Remember when you thought you could beat John Greco at Grecowoman wrestling?
[02:35:13] Speaker A: That was a bad take.
[02:35:14] Speaker B: It was literally in his family name.
[02:35:15] Speaker A: That was a bad take. It was a hot take, but a bad take.
[02:35:18] Speaker B: It's in his surname.
[02:35:19] Speaker A: I should have put it on the verning of a sportscast hot take hotline, but it would have been a bad take. It's still a bad take. It's a bad take. I take it back.
[02:35:25] Speaker B: I'd like you to tell John Greco to his face that you think you can beat him into Greco Roman WrestleMania.
[02:35:29] Speaker A: You want to wrestle?
[02:35:31] Speaker B: Hey, John Johnny.
[02:35:33] Speaker A: Want to wrestle?
[02:35:34] Speaker B: All right, number one, what do you this is important.
[02:35:40] Speaker A: Okay?
[02:35:42] Speaker B: The use of forks was once considered sacrilege.
[02:35:46] Speaker A: Oh, no.
[02:35:48] Speaker B: This widely used eating intention was once seen as offensive to God holy hell. When it was first introduced in Italy in the 11th century. Because people used to eat with their fingers, and the number of fingers used for eating distinguished the upper classes from the lower classes. Three fingers were considered to be good manners. The oldest folks were just forks were discovered in Turkey dating back to the fourth millennium BC. But it was likely they were only used as tools because the church in Italy had argued that God had created humans with fingers so they could eat God's food.
[02:36:22] Speaker A: He saved her from the would be ravishings of her dreadful Turkish uncle.
[02:36:26] Speaker B: I think it's three fingers is good manners. It's usually two today, but who knows? Number two, urine.
[02:36:35] Speaker A: You know what that fact actually reminded me of? You remember earlier in the season, you.
[02:36:39] Speaker B: Hear urine and you immediately stop the story?
[02:36:41] Speaker A: No, not that one, the other one. The finger eating food. Fingers is the guy that said he doesn't like people who eat with utensils.
But anyways go on. Urine.
[02:36:56] Speaker B: Urine, yes. What about urine was used as a mouthwash by ancient Romans.
[02:37:02] Speaker A: Okay, that's weird.
[02:37:03] Speaker B: A human urine was so valuable to ancient Romans that it was collected from public urinals and even taxed, when sold, was used for many purposes. But amusingly, it was used for dental hygiene the most. They used it to clean and whiten their teeth because the active ingredient in urine is a stain remover. Ammonia.
[02:37:24] Speaker A: Oh, wow. Incredible. So it actually worked?
[02:37:27] Speaker B: It did.
[02:37:28] Speaker A: Oh, wow.
[02:37:29] Speaker B: Your teeth looked great. But it smelled like pits.
[02:37:31] Speaker A: That's why your teeth are so cute.
[02:37:35] Speaker B: Number three, peter the Great. How's this for?
[02:37:41] Speaker A: I'm, Peter the Great. That's not how it goes. Go on.
[02:37:44] Speaker B: How's this for a scorned lover? Peter the Great kept the head of his wife's lover in her bedroom. Once Peter the Great had discovered his wife, Catherine's, unfaithfulness to their marriage with Sir William Mons, the ruler had the man beheaded.
[02:38:00] Speaker A: Oh, wow.
[02:38:01] Speaker B: He asked that the head of William be placed in a jar with alcohol. And it was required that the jar remained in Catherine's bedroom until Peter's death so that she could constantly be reminded of her affair.
[02:38:15] Speaker C: That's dark, man.
[02:38:17] Speaker B: Pretty fucked up, isn't it?
[02:38:18] Speaker A: That's pretty fucked up.
[02:38:20] Speaker B: So, yeah. Don't be beheading anybody. Don't drink, pee and forks are totally fine. Like, you're not going to go to hell, I don't think.
[02:38:27] Speaker A: Maybe.
[02:38:28] Speaker B: But if you do go to hell, hopefully there are forks there. And don't just be a part of the problem. Be the whole damn problem.
[02:38:37] Speaker A: And only you can prevent river fires. Burning river river burning river burning river sports cat.
[02:38:46] Speaker B: Oh, no. Burning it didn't record. Nothing recorded for how?
[02:38:52] Speaker A: Burning river, burning river great joke.
[02:38:55] Speaker B: Burning rivers you're the worst. Burning rivers burning river burning river wait. Sing us that. What was the song you were singing earlier?
My bags are packed I'm ready to.
[02:39:08] Speaker A: Go standing here outside your door I hate to wake you up to say goodbye.
[02:39:17] Speaker B: I'm leaving on a jet plane don't know if I'll be back again leaving on a jet plane don't know when I'll be back again good show.

[02:39:38] Speaker D: What better combination could you possibly think of?
[02:39:41] Speaker A: Motorboat.
[02:39:42] Speaker B: You play the motorboat.
[02:39:44] Speaker A: You motorboat son of a bitch. You old sailor, you.
[02:39:48] Speaker B: Who's canceled now? Who's canceled now?
[02:39:50] Speaker A: Probably me.

[02:39:54] Speaker A: I'm not just you.
[02:39:56] Speaker B: We're a whole race, basically.
[02:39:59] Speaker A: It doesn't matter what you think.
[02:40:02] Speaker B: Loser gets his eyes pecked out by a crow.
[02:40:04] Speaker A: No, that's not it. That's not the one.
[02:40:06] Speaker B: Come on.
[02:40:06] Speaker A: No.
[02:40:07] Speaker B: Don't be a woosie.
[02:40:08] Speaker A: What do you think this is, medieval times?
[02:40:11] Speaker C: Fire ant mitten.

By the way? I want my foreskin back.

[02:40:23] Speaker D: You can touch me all the time.

[02:40:29] Speaker B: She said touch me. Touch me.
[02:40:31] Speaker D: So that's basically I'm going to get.
[02:40:34] Speaker B: A shirt that says touch me.
[02:40:37] Speaker D: Yeah.
[02:40:38] Speaker B: It's not going to say feel me. It's going to just say touch me.
[02:40:41] Speaker A: The other one. The finger eating food fingers.
[02:40:44] Speaker B: The weather outside is weather.
[02:40:47] Speaker A: All I do is win win no matter what. What do you mean funny?
[02:40:51] Speaker B: Funny?

We've heard it over and over and over again. You've got $230,000,000 invested in that quarterback. Stand up and act like this is a team that you were built to be. Go out and take it from them.
[02:41:09] Speaker A: Hell yes. Zach changed my pick. He's done it. Hell yes.
[02:41:13] Speaker C: We got browns 2017.
[02:41:17] Speaker A: Boneman has changed his pick. Browns 2017. I am the only browns fan on this show that is not taking the browns to beat the five and 49 ers erroneous erroneous on both counts.
[02:41:30] Speaker B: Oh, lord. Wow.
