It's time. Time for the Burning River Sportscast. Week one came and went not with a bang, but with a whimper. This Browns team came out and played every bit as poorly as we anticipated. Everything the entire offseason was leading up to was telegraphed almost word for word into a sloppy, sad and uninspiring effort, ending in a predictable blowout. Welcome to the NFL moment for Todd Monkin. Frankly, the effort was so lethargic and apathetic, there's very little I could say that would do justice to the hot garbage that graced our television screens on Sunday afternoon. Where did it all go wrong? Was there anything positive to take away? And where do they go from here to get it fixed? We'll break it all down for you next on the Bur River Sportscast.
All we can hope for at this point is just for a couple good things here and there to happen, because most of it's really bad.
[00:01:25] The Bone Man: Desean was as bad as we thought he would be.
[00:01:29] Kenny Thunder: If that doesn't spell crisp operation, I don't know what else does.

[00:01:38] The Bone Man: Yeah, they got booed in the preseason. They see the writing on the wall. It's coming game three if this continues.

[00:01:48] The Bone Man: I don't believe that's a winning formula, Mr. Thunder.

All right, so it's time for the Burning River News story of the week.
Just me and Bone here today. So since we don't have Red Hot Ronnie Jim's to slow us down, this will probably be the fastest episode in the history of the Burning River Sportscast. But getting things started, the Ohio State Buckeyes fall to Texas.

[00:05:06] The Bone Man: Yeah, a lot of sad football this week.
[00:05:08] Kenny Thunder: A lot of sad football thoughts on the game.
[00:05:13] The Bone Man: It was very disappointing. I was like the whole game you had that thought, we're going to win, we're going to win. Look at us just putting it on Texas. And then slowly, slowly it dwindled away.
[00:05:24] Kenny Thunder: Just kept waiting for them to, like, put their boot on their neck.
[00:05:27] The Bone Man: Yeah.
[00:05:27] Kenny Thunder: And just Ryan Day doesn't do that. No killer instinct.
[00:05:30] The Bone Man: Yeah, he doesn't do that.
He likes to let everybody hang around
[00:05:33] Kenny Thunder: and then lose at the End very disappointing. And you know, the thing that killed it for me was I wouldn't mind losing to Texas. Right. Like, it's a top matchup, it's a premier matchup. It was like one of the games of the week.
I wouldn't have minded it so much if Arch Manning had come out and was just undeniably good. If he had just put it on us and you go, you walk away and you go, that guy's going to be the first pick in the NFL draft.
[00:05:57] The Bone Man: Right.
[00:05:58] Kenny Thunder: But it really wasn't. I mean, he played better in this iteration of the game than last year's game, but it wasn't markedly better. I mean, if Ohio State didn't take their foot off the gas and play so conservatively, he wouldn't have won that game. He didn't come out and take it.
[00:06:14] The Bone Man: We missed a field goal, right? We make that field goal, we won the game.
Ultimately it came down to that and it shouldn't have come to that. We should have been up by more. But yeah, like you said, he didn't take the game away from us. He didn't light it up against us.
I'm still kind of on the fence about Arch Manning as far as do we. Is he the real deal?
[00:06:37] Kenny Thunder: I just keep waiting for him to go out and take it. Like, show me you're the best quarterback in college.
[00:06:41] The Bone Man: Sure.
[00:06:43] Kenny Thunder: The other thing that really bothers me is how many kicks are we going to miss in clutch moments like in the world of Nil where you can just buy players? Why has that not been a priority for this Buckeyes team to go out and get a guy that can make field goals consistently?
[00:06:57] The Bone Man: We miss a lot of big time kicks.
I specifically remember the Georgia game a couple of years ago in the national. It was like the semifinals or whatever it was. I just remember like falling to the ground. Me and my cousin, both, my, my wife filmed us as it happened in
[00:07:11] Kenny Thunder: the end game this year.
[00:07:12] The Bone Man: That's. Yeah, exactly. There's so many. There's so many.
[00:07:16] Kenny Thunder: I don't understand how we can't get a guy. It feels like we haven't had a kicker since Nuge.
[00:07:19] The Bone Man: Yeah. Nude.
[00:07:23] Kenny Thunder: So I guess, you know, I don't know, there's a lot of people on the like fire Ryan Day train.
The guy gets harder and harder to defend. Right. Like I've been a pretty staunch defender of his to say, like, his winning percentage is remarkable.
[00:07:36] The Bone Man: Yeah.
[00:07:37] Kenny Thunder: It could be worse. Right. We've seen other big programs move on to other guys and not have success. So I always tell myself it could be worse, but this guy just seems to choke on the biggest stages over and over and over again.
[00:07:49] The Bone Man: And I, I've never been one to go back and watch the tape, but did it seem like our star stud player, possibly the best player in NCAA football, just didn't get the ball in the second half?
[00:08:00] Kenny Thunder: It was pretty weird because in the early goings of the game, it felt like the offense ran entirely through Jeremiah Smith. So. And they pretty much did whatever they wanted. There was one drive in particular where I think they threw the ball to him like two or three times in a row.
[00:08:12] The Bone Man: Sure.
[00:08:13] Kenny Thunder: And that was the entire drive.
[00:08:15] The Bone Man: It couldn't be stopped. It couldn't be stopped.
[00:08:17] Kenny Thunder: Can't stop it.
[00:08:17] The Bone Man: I'm just like, did they put three guys on him or something? Which would lead me to believe if they did do that and they shut them down somehow, I don't see how you do it. Somebody else had to have been available.
[00:08:27] Kenny Thunder: A massive disappointment and a, A disappointing prelude into the things that were with the Browns the following day. But I mean, I guess all in all, look, hopefully this is like one of those humble me now moments for this Buckeyes team. And they go, God, we don't like the taste we got in our mouth right now. And they go out and just run the table the rest of the way. And you know, it shouldn't affect them too terribly much given the playoff scenario now.
[00:08:54] The Bone Man: Yeah, I agree.
[00:08:54] Kenny Thunder: So as long as they take care of business the rest of the way,
[00:08:57] The Bone Man: a rematch, I think in, in the wintertime would be. Would be fun. So hopefully that happens.
[00:09:03] Kenny Thunder: And are you bought in on Julian saying, being a guy, I kind of like him.
I don't know, I feel like it's like the expectations aren't the same as they are for like Arch Manning.
[00:09:14] The Bone Man: Yeah.
[00:09:15] Kenny Thunder: But he's a big time quarterback at a big time college program.
[00:09:17] The Bone Man: I feel like he's got, he's got good size. Right. He's not, he's not a short guy. He's.
[00:09:21] Kenny Thunder: He checks most every box. I think his arm could be, could be stronger. But they talk about him in the same way they talk about Dylan Gabriel and that he's a quick prosecutor of information and is a general on the field, those types of things, which is good.
I just don't know that I see anything spectacular athletically from him just as a player.
[00:09:43] The Bone Man: But I was kind of switching gears. We're still talking college quarterbacks that John Matier for Oklahoma.
[00:09:50] Kenny Thunder: Oklahoma, yeah.
[00:09:51] The Bone Man: Their game was on. Who did they play?
I Forget. But they were, it was a good game. But I was kind of watching him specifically because they were talking him up quite a bit.
He did not look very impressive either.
[00:10:04] Kenny Thunder: Yeah, the quarterback derby has been interesting, especially with Oregon kind of stuttering out of the gate.
So it'll be real interesting to see. I mean, obviously there's a long way to go in college football this year. Large Manning didn't play well until well down the stretch the last six, seven games last season. So a lot can change.
But it'll be interesting.
[00:10:26] The Bone Man: Someone else may come out the blue. I feel like. Did we know who Fernando Mendoza was at the beginning of last season?
[00:10:31] Kenny Thunder: Was he.
I think if you were deeper into college football circles, there were a lot of people that were high on him because there were people that were high on Signetti and that Indiana program.
[00:10:40] The Bone Man: But.
[00:10:42] Kenny Thunder: But no, I don't think he was the household name that he was at the start of the season that he was at the end of the season.
So anyway, Buckeyes lose. That sucks.

After the fan vote that was conducted today on our socials, the Burning river sports guest dog of the week is Denzel Boston. A whopping two receptions for 59 yards and one touchdown. Let's be real, it was pretty much all just on that one play. I mean, he was our leading receiver for the day, but it all came in garbage time on one play, which, you know, good for Denzel Boston. It was good to at least get him into the mix, right? Like early in the season, this. These garbage time, like, it doesn't mean anything in terms of the outcome of games. But the one thing I think we're going to have to. We're going to have to get excited about, if we can get excited about anything, is just the progression of these young players, namely these wide receivers. Casey Concepcion, Denzel Boston, this young offensive line. There's a lot of good that can come out of getting These reps, even if it doesn't necessarily have an impact on the game.
[00:14:53] The Bone Man: Yeah. Yeah. Good for him. Getting his first NFL touchdown.
And it kind of stinks. It was in garbage time. It was a good.
[00:15:00] Kenny Thunder: It was a good layout.
[00:15:01] The Bone Man: It was a nice layout.
[00:15:02] Kenny Thunder: It was a great catch.
[00:15:04] The Bone Man: And I would say not an easy catch.
[00:15:06] Kenny Thunder: No.
[00:15:06] The Bone Man: Because it. Yeah, it was impressive on the run. Back of the end zone, over his head.
[00:15:12] Kenny Thunder: All we can hope for at this point is just for a couple good things here and there to happen because most of it's really bad. And that will take us to the rest of the bad in the Browns brief.
[00:15:33] The Bone Man: All right.
[00:15:33] Kenny Thunder: Brown's brief. Obviously, on Sunday night after the game, red hot, Ronnie James and I jumped on and gave you our thoughts already. But on Sunday nights, as normal, we are boneless. So bone before we really jump into the rest of the Browns news. Got thoughts just on. Just overall. Browns lost to Jacksonville on Sunday.
[00:15:54] The Bone Man: Yeah.
You know what? I'm not even going to start with desean because I think we already all know. I'll have a few words for that. But the defense was pretty bad. I didn't expect that. I was kind of going into this season kind of thinking we weren't going to.
I believed we were going to miss Miles, but I didn't think it was going to be that big.
And I think the biggest miss was not having Jim Schwartz.
It just didn't seem like they were ready. The D line did absolutely nothing to put pressure on Trevor Lawrence. I was reading. He got hit three times the entire game and was pressured on four of 24 drop backs. It's not good. Not good at all. Not a way to win a game, especially against a quarterback like Trevor Lawrence, who's really coming into his own and is very good.
[00:16:39] Kenny Thunder: Not good enough.
[00:16:40] The Bone Man: Yeah, yeah. Desean was as bad as we thought he would be.
Literally can't play, has zero ability to handle pressure.
We were kind of texting. It was like the first three series of the games.
Interception, Right. A little bit of pressure through interception.
Next series, under pressure. Should have been picked off. Was in the dirt behind the receiver and it was right in the defender's hands and he dropped it.
That might have led to a punt. I can't remember exactly what it was. And then the next series was like a strip sack, which he happened to recover. It looked like the other Jacksonville should have recovered it.
Fumble.
[00:17:19] Kenny Thunder: It's one of those where the ball was on the ground and everybody was looking at it. Nobody jumped on it.
[00:17:22] The Bone Man: Yeah. And somehow desean got It. I don't know how he ended up
[00:17:25] Kenny Thunder: with the bottom of the pile.
[00:17:26] The Bone Man: Yeah. And at that point, the game was over. We lost. I think the game was over, and we lost even before that. But.
[00:17:31] Kenny Thunder: Well, yeah, I mean, the end of the first quarter, I think it was like, 21 nothing already.
[00:17:34] The Bone Man: Yeah, it was terrible.
It's almost like, I feel like we said this last year, like, everybody knows desean shouldn't be on the field, his teammates included. They're not idiots.
So it's just like, why do you even try? Why do you even play hard?
I know they're NFL players, and it's like, you're supposed to do that. That's your job. But it's like you can see the writing on the wall already. You're like, they're forcing this guy out there for some reason. I just. I can't breath my mind around it. I have a few ideas, but I don't know why he's out there.
[00:18:04] Kenny Thunder: I mean, you're 100% right. Like, we went through these permutations with Joe Flacco last year and then Dylan Gabriel, and we watched this offense be anemic for weeks, and everyone's going, why is this K?
And then you finally see Shador, who. He wasn't great, but the offense at least moved the ball.
[00:18:21] The Bone Man: It was exciting.
[00:18:22] Kenny Thunder: It was something to watch.
[00:18:23] The Bone Man: It was exciting. A young kid trying to make a future himself in the NFL who has some talent, who can make a play on the move, you know, under pressure.
[00:18:30] Kenny Thunder: He just wasn't afraid. Yeah, I mean, that was the biggest thing for me. Is he at least was. He at least was aggressive in taking shots.
[00:18:36] The Bone Man: Desean looked afraid after he threw that first pick. It was just done. Like, his confidence was already shot, and it was completely shot after that.
[00:18:44] Kenny Thunder: And that's the thing. I think that was tough. Taking away from this game was. If you look at the stat line, the stat line didn't end up being all that bad. And granted, 50 yards and a touchdown of that was on that final drive and garbage time. So the game was well lost before that happened. But overall, he finishes with a passer reading of like 97. So if you're just reading box scores, you're going, well. I mean, what's all this? Desean talks overblown. He played just fine, but that's been his career here.
[00:19:08] The Bone Man: Exactly. The box score, dink and dunk, just like Dylan Gabriel, and you go nowhere with that.
[00:19:14] Kenny Thunder: That's exactly what I said last night on the. On the recap or on Sunday after The on the recap show was to me, the DeSean Watson offense. Is the Dylan Gabriel experience elevated just slightly?
[00:19:26] The Bone Man: Yeah, he's.
[00:19:26] Kenny Thunder: He's just a little better than Dylan Gabriel and that's not good because I think the same things that desean was able to do effectively are the same things Dylan Gabriel did effectively, which is your swing passes, throwing the ball behind a line of scrimmage, the extension of the run game, the quick timing patterns and things where you have guys that are right in front of you. Right. Like anytime he was asked to put the ball downfield in longer, intermediate routes, it was a gamble. I mean, he lets go the ball and everybody holds their breath.
Hopefully that ends up where it's supposed to go. And there were plenty of them that were behind guys. There were plenty of them that were in the dirt, plenty of them that were out of bounds, out of reach.
I can't believe the stat line ended up as good as it did because watching the game, I was thinking to myself, like, this is some of the worst quarterback play I've ever seen.
[00:20:15] The Bone Man: And that first drive we were texting each other and immediately it was just like, okay, first play, over 10 yards interception.
[00:20:20] Kenny Thunder: Yep.
[00:20:20] The Bone Man: You know, it was as soon as
[00:20:22] Kenny Thunder: he put in the air because I
[00:20:23] The Bone Man: was kind of thinking, oh, look at this, the offense is moving. How about that? Maybe Todd Monken can do it.
Yeah.
[00:20:29] Kenny Thunder: No, Nope, was not.
[00:20:31] The Bone Man: A little bit more is asked of your quarterback, your veteran $230 million quarterback, and yeah, was not game over.
[00:20:38] Kenny Thunder: Not good. And speaking of the locker room, it sounds like, you know, and a lot of this is maybe just media creation, but we getting questions around the locker room and if guys are behind, DeSean Watson and Todd Monkin came out and said, quote, really, to be honest, they don't have a choice. This isn't up for debate.
I don't know that this is a sign of a well run, cohesive organization. He went on to say, I'm not going to fire myself and I'm not going to fire the players. He's, I'm not going to fire my staff. He's one of 53.
It just feels way too early in the season to be having that conversation
[00:21:16] The Bone Man: that seems like this is like an end of the year type of thing.
You know, week 15 rolls around. Yeah.
[00:21:23] Kenny Thunder: And you're going. It feels like you might have lost the locker room, Todd.
[00:21:27] The Bone Man: Yeah.
[00:21:28] Kenny Thunder: So I don't know where exactly that sprang up from, but it's concerning that that's already being asked.
You know, I think it's Very.
It's very obvious that, like, the fans don't want to see it, and we all know that that's out there. So if the question was asked about, you know, the fans and. And from that aspect, I go, okay, it's a fair question. If you're asking about the locker room already, that's pretty concerning to me. It's not good, because these guys that are asking the questions are in and around that locker room. They hear things, they see things, and that's what they asked your head coach.
[00:21:59] The Bone Man: They don't want to be booed either. You know what I mean? It's like they got booed in the preseason. They see the writing on the wall. It's coming game three, if this continues.
[00:22:08] Kenny Thunder: I mean, it just, you know, if desean had come out and played okay, we wouldn't have had all these questions still. Yeah, you could kind of swallow it and go, you know, hey, they didn't really lose because of desean. And Todd after the game said this wasn't all desean's fault. And it's true. It wasn't all desean's fault. But desean didn't do anything to win the game either.
[00:22:28] The Bone Man: No, no. A quarterback is supposed to elevate the rest of the team, and that just hasn't happened for anybody at quarterback in a Browns uniform since. Not even a little bit, since maybe Shador played a few games last year, but it's. It's kind of a hard thing to watch. So.
[00:22:46] Kenny Thunder: It's been ugly. It was an ugly start.
Speaking of ugly, Zion Johnson went down with a left knee injury.
Todd Mungen said he doesn't really have an update yet. We will get a final update later in the week, so probably by the time this episode airs, we will know for sure. But it sounded like initial scans came back okay and that it's nothing structural or long, so he should be okay, which is good.
[00:23:10] The Bone Man: Yeah.
[00:23:11] Kenny Thunder: Because, you know, it was his holding call on first down that led to the false start by Titus Howard and the delay a game by deshaun Watson, another holding call by Zion Johnson that put the Browns in a second 34 situation a week ago. So if that doesn't spell crisp operation, I don't know what else does.
Yeah, speaking of operations, 11 penalties for 75 yards.
The one thing we heard all off season, operation, operation, operation. The reason DeSean Watson won the quarterback competition was because the operation was. Was smooth under him. 11 penalties for 75 yards. Is that what we're after?
[00:23:47] The Bone Man: I don't believe that's a winning formula, Mr. Thunder?
[00:23:51] Kenny Thunder: Probably not. Probably not. And then you alerted alluded to this. Probably the most disappointing thing about the loss was this defensive performance. Because another thing I heard all off season was wasn't that big of a loss to lose. Jim Schwartz. There were a lot of people that said this Miles Garrett trade instantly, that the Browns won the Miles Garrett trade because J Verse was a player and we weren't going to lose a whole lot. And he's younger and he's ascending and that this defense still had playmakers all over the ball.
All over. And that's true. There's a lot of veterans on this team. And I think that's why this defensive performance was so disappointing. Not only did they get just run over by Jacksonville who did whatever they wanted, literally guys standing around like looking around for the ball. I mean the, the, the last touchdown Trevor Lawrence threw on the run, like the guy was standing flat footed in the back of the end zone.
But I think the most concerning thing was the lack of pressure overall. Like there's still dudes on this defensive line, right? Like the defense line has talent. And there was clean, clean pocket after clean pocket after clean pocket all day long.
And they give up 125 rush yards. So you know, inability to stop the run, inability to, to create pressure.
They did get one sack, but that was about the lone highlight on defense for the day. Otherwise Jacksonville did whatever they want, wanted the entire game.
[00:25:10] The Bone Man: Yeah, it was, it was kind of hard to watch. You kind of had that hope like, ah, maybe our defense will keep us in it. I know we're going to lose, but they'll keep us around at least until the third quarter.
[00:25:19] Kenny Thunder: Well, and that's the thing, right? Like you go back to last year, they were in a lot of games even. Even though they really didn't have a shot to win it. I mean we watched the, the deal and Gabriel offense, the dink and dunk and, and the inability to move the ball and generate first downs on offense and we were just, you know, the punt became our favorite play. But the defense at least kept games close.
[00:25:38] The Bone Man: You get a timely turnover like late in the.
Give yourself a chance, you know, the game's still worth watching.
[00:25:43] Kenny Thunder: I mean you were thinking in the third quarter or the fourth quarter, gee if we could just get one drive put together here and get some points on the board, maybe there's a shot something happens. And that just didn't exist at all in this game. So disappointing all around.
I think we'll keep it brief with the Browns brief Because I don't have anything else to say.

[00:26:26] Kenny Thunder: Kenny, that's me was right and Bone was right. And then Baltimore, they won. We were all right there. Pittsburgh won. We were all right there. And Cleveland lost, which we all picked correctly as well.
So for the AFC north standings, Baltimore is 1 and O. Pittsburgh's 1 and O. Cincinnati is 1 and oh, and Cleveland at the bottom as usual. Oh, and one, current king of the north standings. More on that later. Bone, 4 and oh, Kenny, that's me. 4 and O. Running away with this year's competition.

Rough week for old Ronaldo.
[00:27:12] Kenny Thunder: Yeah, he's gonna keep losing because he's the worst. He sucks.
But that will take us to around the NFL.
All rates of the NFL did kick. Kickoff this week was a full slate of games starting on Wednesday.
Just games. NFL all week long.
It was the best time of the year.
But beginning of the week, featured on what was this Thursday was a Netflix game. The Miles Garrett or the Rams game. Rams and rams and 49ers.
[00:27:56] The Bone Man: Yeah. In Australia.
[00:27:57] Kenny Thunder: In Australia, big news out of that was Miles Garrett was. Was basically a no show. Didn't do anything in the game. And there was a lot of talk about, oh, Browns won the trade. Miles Garrett sucks now that he's in la, but turns out he was injured.
Looks like he's going to miss a minimum of four games. After being placed on the IR, Sean McVeigh announced that Miles will require arthroscopic knee surgery with no true timeline for his full return. So good for us, I guess, because that draft pick is kind of hanging out in the balance and right now, La is Owen 1.
Because they did lose. Despite the fact that the Los Angeles Rams took considerable preparation in trying to figure out what their travel itinerary should be for this Australia game, they actually, for two years, put together a very comprehensive in and out strategy to figure out, you know, how long it would take to dust off the cobwebs and get these guys ready to play.
[00:29:04] The Bone Man: Play.
[00:29:05] Kenny Thunder: And decided on arriving just 28 hours before kickoff.
Over the course of two years, the team sent 15 staffers to Australia to monitor their bodies, their sleep rhythms, and to design the rapid travel schedule. Four players acted as guinea pigs in the spring, making a trial trip under similar Conditions.
The rams shipped roughly 25,000 pounds of equipment, including game day drinks, supplements, months in advance to clear strict customs. And after three practices in la, the team flew, flew overnight on Tuesday and landed in Melbourne on Thursday morning, local time after, for about 28 hours before playing the 49ers on Friday.
The Rams then flew back to Los Angeles immediately after the game, spending roughly just 35 hours on Australian soil. The 49ers, by contrast, arrived a full week early to acclimate to the jet lag and the time change and everything else. Just eating weird food.
What's the, what do they eat over there? What's the koala bear?
No, not at all.
It's like paste Vegemite.
[00:30:16] The Bone Man: Oh, Vegemite.
[00:30:16] Kenny Thunder: Vegemite sandwiches.
[00:30:18] The Bone Man: Way off.
[00:30:20] Kenny Thunder: Koala bear. The hell bone.
And it worked out for the 49ers because they won 27 to 7 and the Rams looked like they were asleep the entire time. So bad job out of them. A waste of two whole years of all their lives.
[00:30:34] The Bone Man: I feel like you get to just ask any common person who like flies even an hour out of a time zone, they'd be like, oh, I messed up from that for like two days, two, three days.
[00:30:44] Kenny Thunder: I mean we drove back from Alabama this summer and you know, it's a long drive, it's 15 hour drive or whatever, but just, just that drive alone, like my body was screwed up and with that was an hour behind and it was just a long drive, like I was screwed up for like four days afterwards.
[00:31:01] The Bone Man: I feel like this is just like a common experience for anybody who travels,
[00:31:04] Kenny Thunder: anybody that's ever done business in Australia, like hey, what's that like? Yeah, taking a 20 hour flight, all
[00:31:11] The Bone Man: the extensive data and research and sending people and all this and it's just
[00:31:15] Kenny Thunder: like you guys failed 27 to 7, but again good for the Browns because oh, and one on the Rams watchboard is good for our draft pick. So absolutely moving on. The Cardinals had the big upset over the New invented Mike McDaniels offense of the Chargers, so. So they were a double digit dog in that. So that was a big surprise.
The Kyler Murray era may be over before it began in Minnesota. After a nasty concussion early in the game.
However, Carson Wentz played really well in backup duty, became the first backup to throw three touchdown passes, no interceptions in a season opening win since Fran Tarkenton on September 17, 1961, which was Fran Tarkenton's first career game and also the very first game in Minnesota Vikings history.
[00:32:05] The Bone Man: That's pretty cool.
[00:32:06] Kenny Thunder: Yeah, A little bit of history.
[00:32:07] The Bone Man: I wish we had a quarterback like Carson Wentz.
[00:32:10] Kenny Thunder: We could have probably had him at some point there.
Deandre Swift ran for three touchdowns and a 59 point win over Carolina. And I bet if you had told Panthers fans that Bryce Young was going to go 23, 37 for 361 yards and three touchdowns, there's no way in hell they would be thinking they would have lost that game by more than three scores.
[00:32:29] The Bone Man: Yeah, it's wide. Wow.
[00:32:31] Kenny Thunder: That Chicago offense is pretty, Pretty interesting. They've been talking all off season about wanting to set the single season points record. So 59 is a. It's a pretty good start. They got a lot of speed in that wide receiver room. We'll see how it goes the rest of the way.
Where are we at? Sam Darnold, he hurt his butt, but the Seahawks.

The Seahawks didn't miss him too bad though, as Diana Rossini was unfortunately unable to feed insider information to her beau, Mike Vrabel, now that they're both under surveillance, which led to their inability to stop Drew Lock in a Super bowl rematch loss.
I do hate Pittsburgh, but boy, it was good to see Kevin Stefanski loose. So that was fun.

[00:35:10] Kenny Thunder: Perfect. Well, Jeff, we'd love to get to know a little bit about your chapter. So tell us what you got going on down there.
[00:35:17] Jeff: Yeah, I'm the president of the South Shore Brownsbackers. Like I said, meet at the Salty Shamrock in Apollo Beach, Florida, just outside of Tampa.
The club was founded in 2018.
Started with my buddy, started the club with five members.
We're up to over 290 members now.
We've grown very well.
We've done. We've met at the Salty Shamrock every year we've been in existence. It's a great bar to be at and partner with. They do a lot for us. We try to do a lot for them.
We have a great group of people that meet every week, support the club as much as they can, as much as they like to watch the Browns every week.
But we do get a great group of people.
We do raise a lot of money. Our local charity partner is Dogs, Inc.
They're a local guide dog and service dog organization.
And they do everything from breeding and training, raising the dogs, from puppies up to actual guide dogs. Service dogs provide them to people at no charge to them.
So all the money that takes to do all that is coming from organizations like us, that charity partners with them.
Our goal every year is to sponsor a guide dog puppy. And when we can do that, we were able to name a dog, and we've named several dogs in the past few years. We've had Biner and Chubb and Miles and Otto, and the last one we named this past year was Ozzy.
[00:37:10] Kenny Thunder: Nice.
[00:37:11] The Bone Man: That's awesome.
[00:37:13] Jeff: Keep it all Cleveland themed and. And it's a. It's a great time down here.
[00:37:20] The Bone Man: I. I just want to say I love that charity. It's like you're. You're helping dogs, you're helping animals, and like, helping people all at the same time. So that's just.
[00:37:27] Kenny Thunder: That's very worthwhile cause.

So you said you had 290 members. Now, that's a huge group. How many do you think show up pretty regularly on game day there?
[00:37:42] Jeff: The first week, we usually get around 70, 80 people.
Then, depending on how the team goes, the following can go right with the record either up or down.
Playoff game, we filled out that entire restaurant with Browns fans for that playoff game. That was really cool.
[00:38:07] Kenny Thunder: Very nice. Yeah, I think we see that especially with backers groups that are in, you know, tourist destinations.
As the Browns get worse throughout the season, the crowds tend to. To thin out, especially when you're competing against the weather and attractions and other things, Right?
Absolutely.
[00:38:28] Jeff: Speaking of competing with the weather, we competed with the weather a few times a couple years ago with hurricanes.
[00:38:36] Kenny Thunder: Yeah.
Now, Jeff, are you. Are you from Florida or are you a transplant originally from this area?
[00:38:43] Jeff: I am a transplant. I'm originally from Stowe, outside of Akron. I would move down to Florida 20 years ago.
Couldn't take the snow and cold anymore and just pack up. Quit my job and headed south.
[00:39:02] Kenny Thunder: Headed south to start a brownsbackers group.
[00:39:04] The Bone Man: I just want to say congratulations. He did it. Like, I.
You just hear people say that all the time. And you actually did it.

[00:39:15] Jeff: Perfect move to Winter Haven. When I first moved down here, and only because the Indians spring training stadium was that there didn't know anybody around in the area. And it's. It's.

So, Jeff, we're going to switch gears a little bit here. We're going to talk a little bit of ball.
Obviously, the home or the season opener this week didn't go quite as planned.
Anything in particular stand out to you from the very first game of the season?
[00:39:53] Jeff: The first drive started really well and looked pretty good. And then the first drive took over the rest of the game.
Interception, fumble, defense could have been better.
I will say it's a perk of being a brownsbackers president. There's so much going on during the game that you don't really have much of a chance to watch the game. Game
[00:40:23] Kenny Thunder: busy running raffles and things.
[00:40:25] Jeff: Right.
Raffles and selling everything. Especially this past week for next week.
[00:40:32] Kenny Thunder: Very nice. Very nice.
So, obviously we have a big game coming up this week.
The. The return in some form or fashion of Baker Mayfield.
We have kind of the. The drama building with desean versus Baker.
You got thoughts on who wins this week and what the score is going to be?
[00:40:54] Jeff: I think it's going to be close.
Baker showed some vulnerabilities against Cincinnati this past weekend, and if the defense can come together and exploit those issues, maybe still on his high from signing that big extension with the Buccaneers, we can take care of that and we can get the offense going. The wide receivers look pretty good. This past week.
I think it'll be a pretty close game.
[00:41:27] Kenny Thunder: So who wins?
[00:41:31] Jeff: You had to ask.

Do you think this is a quick hook for desean? Do you want to see desean play all year long? Are you itching to see Shador?

[00:42:11] Jeff: If you had a microphone in the Salty Shamrock this past weekend, you would have known that they did not want a Shawn in.

I think a lot of people want to see Shador.
I think it'll be good.
But a lot of people also say the next year's quarterback's not on the roster right now, so keep the.

[00:42:56] Jeff: I mean, there's always talk of Arch. I mean, he did pretty well against Ohio State on Saturday after the first quarter.
There's a few others that could. Could stand out also. I think the.
I think the big thing is they've got some wide receivers for the quarterback to throw to now. I think Concepcion and Boston are going to do pretty well, just need somebody to throw the ball to.
[00:43:28] Kenny Thunder: I guess that would be my final question for you then, Jeff. Do you trust this, this gm, this ownership group, if they get the first pick in the NFL draft, do you trust them to get it right?
[00:43:42] Jeff: Let's just say they've done fairly well the past couple years, but it is still the group that brought desean in in the first place.

All right, so we've got the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had Liam Cohen, who throttled the Browns last week in Jacksonville. He was in their building with one of the best offenses in football, and they really said, nope, we're going to ride this thing out. With Todd Bowles, who is currently in his fifth season at the helm, serving not just as head coach but also the de facto defender.
Zach Robinson, coming off tremendous success with the Atlanta Falcons offense for the last two years, looks to duplicate his efforts with Baker Mayfield in Tampa.
And yes, that brings us to the reason we're all here to see the showdown. Former number one overall pick of the Cleveland Browns jettisoned after winning the first Cleveland playoff game in three decades and returning the franchise to respectability for a guy with two dozen sexual assault allegations who's played in exactly 20 games and hasn't been good in a single one. One of them the ultimate face off between good and evil. While the game is mostly meaningless, Sunday will be cinema for Browns fans because there's very few in betweeners here. You either love one guy and hate the other or you hate both guys. Either way, kickoff will be rife with emotion. It's early in the season, so Baker will have his full complement of weapons in running back Bucky Irving and a strong wide receiver core featuring Mecca Egbuca and Chris Godwin. Kate Otten is suitable at tight end but not great. And this offensive line is one of the best in the league, anchored by all pro Tristan Worfs and with Luke Gettyke on the other end who surrendered zero sacks. Quarterback hits on over 400 pass blocking snaps last year.
After a disappointing 2025, the Bucs defense has a new look. Reuben Baines has elite potential and fellow rookie Josiah Trotter both won starting jobs in camp. Former Lion Alex Alex Anzalone and Asha Robinson shore up the middle. The big man all six four, 347 pounds of Evita Vea is still out there after inking a 30 million dollar one year extension this summer and the secondary is anchored by all pro Antoine Winfield Jr. This group is a bit of a work in progress but is poised to be aggressive with talent at all three levels. Former Brown Chase McLaughlin handles the kicking duties and veteran Riley Dixon returns as the punter.

All right, so we have. These are. These are Ronnie Jams thoughts, not my own. So I guess I'll just read these here to you. He was nice enough to at least put down his matchups that matter for us.
[00:48:44] The Bone Man: That was nice of him.
[00:48:45] Kenny Thunder: Yeah, thanks. Ronnie Jams number one he has the Browns interior offensive line versus The Buccaneers interior defensive lines defensive line Browns have to run to win.
Last week they averaged 2.8 yards of carry so they're going to do better than that quarterback will not win it for we know because deshaun Watson is terrible. Can the O line open up some running lanes this week and take some pressure off of the arm of desean Watson? Number two the Browns secondary versus the young Bucks wide receiver core Tampa Bay has several talented wideouts. Several talented wideouts.
Sorry, I can't talk. Can the Brown secondary contain them? I don't know. Ronnie Jams, you'll have to tell us. They actually do have a quarterback. Say what you want about Baker, he's. He's decent at the very least. So in summary, the Buccaneers finished last year at an 8 and 9 record. Started this season with a tough loss, albeit a shootout in Kentucky against the Bengals.
Only one game in. But currently their defense ranks 17th overall past defense number 22 in the NFL at 245 yards per game. Run defense 13th in the NFL at 106 yards.
The offense ranks number 20 right now at 282 yards per game. Running game 89 yards per game is is good enough for 22nd in the NFL and ranked 16th in the NFL in passing at 193 yards per game. So per game. Per game is just one game. Just one game. But the Browns, coming off a 5 and 12 record in 2025, started this season was even worse with that embarrassing loss to the Jaguars. Again, only one game. But defensively overall, number 18 in the NFL, 360 yards per game. Pass defense, number 21. Run defense, number 21. I'm sensing a three theme. Offensively, overall, number 22 at 272 yards in game one. Running game, number 23 in the NFL. And passing game ranked number 19. So there were like 13 quarterbacks worse than Deshaun Watson. Apparently.
[00:50:45] The Bone Man: That one 50 yard throw to Denzel
[00:50:46] Kenny Thunder: Boston really, really changed things.
[00:50:49] The Bone Man: Really padded the stats.
[00:50:50] Kenny Thunder: But you know what that means is it's time to bring in the big bone man. Because it's time for bone man. Skeleton key to.
[00:51:03] The Bone Man: Bone.
[00:51:03] Kenny Thunder: What you got.
[00:51:04] The Bone Man: All right.
Kind of the theme here I touched on a little bit earlier about how kind of weak our pressure rate was. So we need to get after Baker. We need to make him uncomfortable, force him into situations, make him turn the ball over, get a strip sack, get a fumble, get whatever, get an interception.
I believe our offense cannot win the game for us. Our defense has to do it.
As they kept us in it last year, we didn't see that in our first game, but hopefully something can change this week and they can turn that around and, and yeah, put some pressure on Baker. I don't see any other way for us to win this game.
[00:51:38] Kenny Thunder: Would be nice to see any pressure at all. That would be a contrast between pressure at all, any pressure at all, whether
[00:51:44] The Bone Man: that's through scheme or our D line steps it up or they get some help with some blitzing packages, whatever it may be. Something has to. Something has to change.
[00:51:52] Kenny Thunder: And I like Baker, but if there's a knock on Baker outside of people don't like his attitude, it's that Baker will put the ball in harm's way. He will put the ball on the ground. He did three times, times this week, had three fumbles. So.
[00:52:03] The Bone Man: And he'll look to make a play downfield and he will. Yeah, tight situation.
[00:52:06] Kenny Thunder: So you can try and take advantage of that. So I think you're 100% right. There's not a lot of optimism for the Browns in this game just because the Buccaneers offense is pretty high powered and can put up points, put up 27 last week. So it's going to be really hard to. To keep up with that. Just offensively but if this defense can step up in a big way and prove that, you know, last year under Jim Schwartz, wasn't just of Jim Schwartz, that they still have some players out there, that's probably the best we can hope for. Yeah, so that was Bone, man. Skeleton key to victory.
I do have some betting info here. The Buccaneers right now a heavy favorite, minus eight and a half and the over under slated at 40.5.

All right, I agree that Harold Fannin needs to be a part of this offense. He was basically non existent last week and he's arguably your best weapon. I know the young wide receivers are enticing and interesting, but also still unproven.
You know, Harold Fannin had a really good rookie campaign. I think he showed he's capable of a lot. If Todd Monken were smart, he would try and leverage that and get something out of it because he's, he's one of the best weapons this team has. I mean, just, you know, unusual speed with great size.
[00:54:05] The Bone Man: And he had all that success under like not ideal circumstances last year.
[00:54:09] Kenny Thunder: Oh, yeah. With terrible quarterback play all year long and a bad offensive scheme, a poor offensive line, and to most games he was the only option and he was still able to get open and make plays and produce.
[00:54:21] The Bone Man: So.
[00:54:21] Kenny Thunder: I agree with Red hot Ronnie Jams. Harold Fannin has to be a big part of this week's game plan.
My player to watch.
Last week I picked Michael Burton, fullback pred. Predictably, he did absolutely nothing.
So this week I'll go with our dog of the week. Denzel Boston. He had the one flash in the long garbage time. Touchdown. And teased us with just a little of what he's capable of.
This Tampa team can score points, so it's got to be necessary to keep up through the air if they don't want to get blown out Again this week. So I'm expecting big things from my man Denzel L.

[00:55:39] The Bone Man: Or whatever we choose and go with the punishment. In the preseason three years ago, Kenny had a gross of eggs thrown at him by fans in the muni lot before the game. That was actually very painful. I witnessed that. That was terrible. In the preseason two years ago, Kenny had his hair and beat shaven clean off. Bet some at some by some fine folks at. What was that, Lady Jane's? Yeah. Last season, Kenny donned the pads for the first time in almost 20 years and got hit three times by our big guy, former NFL defensive tackle, our defensive end John Hughes. And that looked extremely painful. Those were real hits. And he took three of them in a row.

[01:05:02] Kenny Thunder: But actually it's more of a geography fact. We're gonna be talking about the Diamantina fracture zone. Do you know what the Diamantino fracture zone is?
[01:05:10] The Bone Man: I've never heard of this.
[01:05:12] Kenny Thunder: Well, good, because I can tell you it's a deep underwater trench in the southeastern Indian Ocean, southwest of Australia that holds a massive, newly discovered, discovered ancient whale graveyard.
[01:05:25] The Bone Man: This is a whale fact.
[01:05:26] Kenny Thunder: This is a whale fact.
[01:05:27] The Bone Man: I might be getting an erection.
[01:05:30] Kenny Thunder: It sits roughly 1,000 miles off the coast of Western Australia and plunges over 7,000 meters, that's four miles if you're keeping track down into total darkness and near freezing temperatures. It's thought to have formed 50 to 60 million years ago, when Australia and Antarctica split apart, if you believe in such things.
It was discovered to stretch roughly 1200 kilometers along the seafloor. Nearly 500 fossilized whale sites have been identified, with the oldest bones dating back over 5 million years. Wow. Researchers estimate that the area itself may hold over. Are you ready for it? Over 10 million total whale carcasses.
[01:06:12] The Bone Man: How did they end up there?
[01:06:14] Kenny Thunder: And no one knows why these whales seem to return to this site in particular to die. It may just be a perfect storm of coincidence behavior, deep sea hunting risks, and the unique underwater geography.

[01:06:29] Kenny Thunder: That's wild whale carcasses down into that one spot.
[01:06:32] The Bone Man: That's insane.
[01:06:33] Kenny Thunder: Pretty wild. I know Ronnie James will be sad to miss a whale fact.

Number two.
In 2020, scientists exploring an underwater canyon off Western Australia. We're going back to down there.
Discovered a giant organism coiled into a massive spiral. The outer ring alone was estimated to be 45 to 47 meters long. That's 150ft. Wow. Making it potentially the longest animal ever recorded. Significantly longer than a blue whale. Another whale fact.
[01:07:12] The Bone Man: Yeah. What in the world? Why is it so big?
[01:07:15] Kenny Thunder: While it looks like a single animal, the Apollemia is actually a colony of thousands of individual microscopic clones called zooids, or zooids. These zooids fuse together and specialize in different tasks. Some move the colony, some sting and trap food, and others handle reproduction. And they function effectively as a single body organ. They drift through the deep sea, the deep sea's midnight zone, and arrange themselves into massive UFO like space spirals. They deploy a massive curtain of stinging venomous tentacles that act like a drift net to capture fish, squids, and other jellies. And because of their strange, fragile appearance, they are colloquially. Colloquially.
I can't say it. Colloquially.
[01:07:58] The Bone Man: Colloquially.
[01:08:01] Kenny Thunder: Colloquially called string jellyfish or barbed wire jellyfish.
[01:08:08] The Bone Man: I feel like I saw they did a depiction of this in most Moana.
[01:08:12] Kenny Thunder: Very possible. Yeah. I heard it was also in octonauts.
[01:08:15] The Bone Man: Oh, neat. Oh, yeah, I like octonauts.
[01:08:18] Kenny Thunder: So, yeah. So when they found it, though, this is the biggest thing they've ever seen, is the biggest animal on the planet. Turns out just a lot of really little.
[01:08:25] The Bone Man: Really small. Yeah, that's cool.
[01:08:27] Kenny Thunder: Number three, the Tam Ja Blue hole, which means deep water in Mayan, Is an enormous, enormous underwater sinkhole. Located in Chatuma Bay, Mexico, off the southeast coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, it is the world's deepest blue hole. Initially discovered by a local diver tracking a grouper fish.
No one knows actually how deep it is. In December of 2023, an expedition set out to determine how deep this hole is. They dropped a special 500 meter cable probe into the sinkhole.
Though it never made it the full 500 meters because when it hit 420 meters, something, a creature or incredible underwater current or something else, never let it fully unravel. So deep inside the blue hole, the water's temperature and salt levels suddenly shift, shift to match that exactly of the Caribbean Sea, which is really far distance away from where that is.
Scientists believe that this proves the hole is somehow connected to a massive unexplored labyrinth of underwater caves and tunnels winding deep beneath the seafloor that is insane. And filled apparently with something that can grab onto a probe and swing it side to side.
[01:09:57] The Bone Man: Yeah, that is insane. A friend of ours actually that we grew up with, I was talking with him a few years ago and I think this is the same place. He skydived into this deep blue hole, landed in it, and then proceeded to scuba dive the, the blue hole.
[01:10:14] Kenny Thunder: I wouldn't jump into that hole after I found out that they weren't able to even get to the bottom.
[01:10:18] The Bone Man: I don't think he went that deep, but he said it was magnificent.
[01:10:22] Kenny Thunder: And just the insane, the encounter itself, if you listen to some of the people that were like on the expedition describe it as being grabbed, like something grabbed it and we couldn't put it down any further.
[01:10:35] The Bone Man: Yeah.
[01:10:37] Kenny Thunder: So, you know, could be giant squid.
[01:10:39] The Bone Man: Sure.
[01:10:39] Kenny Thunder: Could be some other big animal or it could just be like a tremendously strong.
[01:10:45] The Bone Man: You could see that. Like a curious, large, curious animal being like, I've never seen anything like this. Yeah. I'm gonna grab this.

[01:10:51] The Bone Man: Try to eat it.

[01:11:11] Kenny Thunder: I was reading that literally the amount of sea floor that we have physically, like, visually. Physically basically researched and discovered amounts to a square footage area total equivalent to the size of Rhode Island.
[01:11:29] The Bone Man: Yeah, that's not very big.
[01:11:30] Kenny Thunder: Of the entire ocean.
[01:11:31] The Bone Man: Entire ocean history of mankind, we've seen Rhode island.
[01:11:35] Kenny Thunder: So we like to Think we know what's down there, but we really don't.
In fact, it's so scary, we just kind of gave up on that altogether, and we were like, let's go out there instead. What's in space that we can learn about?
[01:11:46] The Bone Man: Yeah. Yeah. Let's go check that out.
[01:11:49] Kenny Thunder: There's some terrifying stuff down there, so don't go. But that, my friends, was facts for days. And, man, we really did it. This was, like, gotta be one of the fastest episodes ever in the history of the Burning River Sportscast.
