[00:00:49] Speaker B: Don't wait.
[00:00:49] Speaker A: Secure your spot today and go Brown.
[00:00:55] Speaker C: Media.
[00:01:16] Speaker B: It'S time, time for the Burning river sportscast. Yes, something is amiss in the simulation. If the season ended today, all four teams in the AFC north are playoff bound, and something about that just makes no sense at all. But here we are with the Browns at five and three and feeling glee. Sunday did not disappoint as the Browns took an inferior opponent and for the first time in a long time, played their game and their game alone. Utter domination followed, watching a rookie quarterback run for his life and the Browns offense for the first time all year did not turn the ball over. Even Deshaun Watson came out of hiding and put together a very workmanlike 200 yard, two touchdown finish. That was probably our first clue that something was off in the Matrix. We can enjoy this win for now, but the Gauntlet awaits over the next two weeks against division leaders Baltimore and Pittsburgh, respectively, in two matchups that could very well determine the fate of this Brown season. And the only place that could break it all down for you next is right here on the Burning river sportscast.
You're a liar. You're just an apologist for Cedar Fair. Are they paying you? Are they paying you? How Much are they paying you? Who's behind this? Who's behind this?
[00:02:24] Speaker C: I'm getting just mean.
[00:02:27] Speaker B: You're running the conspiracy.
[00:02:28] Speaker C: I'm running you and Alex Jones, the.
[00:02:31] Speaker D: Two most important people in my life. I expect perfection. And, yeah, Hopkins let me down this week, but luckily, it didn't really matter.
[00:02:40] Speaker C: Who'S the most important.
[00:02:41] Speaker D: Oh, Christy, my.
[00:02:44] Speaker C: Nice.
[00:02:45] Speaker D: Yeah, it's a big bar to live up to.
[00:02:49] Speaker C: It's always good when you're getting vertical.
[00:02:51] Speaker B: Double horizontal. No, horizontal is for sex only. Feels bad, like an orgasm on a subway train.
[00:02:59] Speaker C: Yeah, that's pretty bad. So they've been listless, and now Daniel Jones is ligamentless. Oh, no. And then one last thing. Not NFL related, but the University of Akron Zips took home the wagon wheel this week. So suck it, Kent steak. Just suck it hard.
[00:03:13] Speaker D: Suck it, Kent steak, suck it.
[00:03:17] Speaker E: Well, we have a knock on our door, and it was our cameramen. They left a watermelon at our door, and we're waiting around the corner to see us answer it.
They were just giving a little joke on us, but it was funny.
[00:03:29] Speaker C: But go Gallagher on it and just smash it.
[00:03:32] Speaker E: I haven't had watermelon since.
[00:03:37] Speaker B: Welcome in to the Burning river sportscast, presented by Tapin'Media and brought to you by Seaside events as the official cruise event provider of the Cleveland Browns and organizer of the Browns fan Cruise. [00:04:08] Speaker D: Almost all of them.
[00:04:09] Speaker B: How many is that?
[00:04:12] Speaker D: 236.
[00:04:14] Speaker B: I thought it was 206, but you might be right. That might be 200.
[00:04:17] Speaker D: No, I made that number up.
[00:04:23] Speaker B: Two questions on the next episode of the Burning River Sports guest, brought to you by Seaside Events. As the official cruise event provider of the Cleveland Browns and organizer of the Browns fan Cruise, would you rather talk to Cinnamon or sugar?

And then finally, we'll round things out with the week ten preview for the game against the Baltimore Ravens. So let's just jump right into this. Let's start things off with the Burning river news story of the weekend.
[00:06:24] Speaker B: Here's the first news story of the week. I've been sick for a week, like dying. So thank you.
[00:06:28] Speaker C: Why is that my fault?
[00:06:30] Speaker B: Because I blame you.
[00:06:32] Speaker C: I haven't been sick for a week.
[00:06:34] Speaker B: You were sick. You were sick two weeks ago.
[00:06:36] Speaker C: I got better.
[00:06:37] Speaker B: Yeah, but Then you made me sick.
I made little baby sick.
[00:06:41] Speaker E: I hope. I don't.
[00:06:42] Speaker C: I don't think that I gave your baby sickness. I don't think that's where it came from.
[00:06:45] Speaker B: Where'd my sickness come from?
[00:06:47] Speaker C: Probably work. You go to the office in downtown Cleveland.
[00:06:51] Speaker B: Look, I'm just saying.
[00:06:52] Speaker D: Dirty.
[00:06:52] Speaker B: I've been dying for a week straight. This is terrible.
[00:06:56] Speaker C: Whatever you say, Kimosabi. Anyways, Cedar Fair, the company that owns Cedar Point and Six Flags, have agreed to an $8 billion merger. The new company will be called Six Flags, but will trade under Cedar Fair stock. Ticker of fun. F-U-N.
All in all, this will make them the sole owners of 27 amusement parks, 15 water parks and nine resort properties across uS, Canada and Mexico. The new company will be headquartered in Charlote, North Carolina, but all current administration that's located in Sandusky will remain. And by all accounts, Cedar Fair team is the ones that are maintaining most control in this. While there are twelve board members, Six from Six Flags, Six from Cedar Fair, the CEO is from Cedar Fair, and the CEO that was with Six Flags has been let go.
So take from that while you will, but all parks will keep their names. And what do you guys think about this?
[00:07:57] Speaker D: I was kind of worried that they were going to change Cedar Point's name. I didn't think they would. So I'm happy to see that it's staying put.
[00:08:03] Speaker C: I saw a couple of articles that said the best thing that could happen for Six Flags is to put their name in front of Cedar Point's name on the sign out front. But the worst thing that could happen for Cedar Point is to put Six Flags name in front of their name on the sign out front.
[00:08:18] Speaker D: Yeah, I just feel like Cedar Point is world renowned, so, I mean, tourists from all over the world come here and hit up that park.
[00:08:25] Speaker B: Look, here's the thing. I'm sad to see any type of business be pushed out of Ohio in any.
You know, the fact that this could be headquartered in Charlote and not here is a little bit of a bummer. But I do a personal vendetta against Cedar Fair because they ruined Giaga Lake, what was once the greatest amusement park, the largest amusement park in the entire world, and my favorite place to go ever as a human being for my entire life. They ruined it. They came in, killed it, took all their stuff, and liquidated the whole property. It is terrible. So they can get theirs.
[00:08:58] Speaker C: I don't think that's exactly what happened.
[00:09:01] Speaker B: They eliminated their competition, and it was the greatest amusement park in the history of mankind. It was the world's largest amusement park.
[00:09:08] Speaker C: I think there's a lot more to that story.
[00:09:09] Speaker B: I think you're not paying attention to the story.
[00:09:12] Speaker C: No, I am. They inherited a financial mess.
[00:09:15] Speaker B: Every amusement park is a financial mess. That's why they all keep buying each other.
[00:09:20] Speaker D: Yeah, they had Big Dipper and raging wolf bobs.
[00:09:22] Speaker B: Oh, my gosh. The grizzly run the cereal through a killer.
[00:09:27] Speaker C: My wife actually talks about it right there. I don't know which one it was. I think it was one of the wooden roller coasters. You could actually stand up and get out of your seat.
[00:09:32] Speaker B: That would be the raging wolf Bobs, probably.
[00:09:33] Speaker D: Yeah, I've seen it done.
[00:09:36] Speaker C: That's insane.
[00:09:37] Speaker B: I mean, we used to capacitance to that in the summer, bone man and I, and there would be no lines on any ride. You could be first in the roller coaster line. You'd be last in the roller coaster line. It was the greatest thing ever. Look, the downfall with music park there in Aurora was there was no good way to get there.
Kind of like Sandusky. There's no good way to get there. But because eliminated all the competition in the state everybody goes to.
[00:10:01] Speaker C: So I will add that Giaga Lake. When they combined both sides of the lake, they didn't take into account how you were going to get from one side of the lake to the other. And there was always that huge bottleneck on the bridge and it just caused huge wait times over there. Like, you're just like walking at a snail's pace to try and get to the other.
[00:10:17] Speaker B: The problem was that the city council promised six flags that when they bought it that they would expand 43 into State Route 43 into six lanes on either side, and they never did. So there was no good way for traffic to get there. There was no hotels that came in bad job and built anything there because.
[00:10:32] Speaker C: There'S now all the. All the hotels and stuff that are over there, like just down the street in Streetsboro.
[00:10:40] Speaker B: Cedar Fair.
[00:10:41] Speaker D: Too little, too late.
[00:10:42] Speaker B: I hate them.
[00:10:43] Speaker C: You can blame Cedar Fair all you want, but it wasn't Cedar Fair.
[00:10:46] Speaker B: It was a hostile takeover and they ruined it. And they took away my childhood favorite place.
[00:10:52] Speaker D: Mr. Hyde's nasty fall.
[00:10:53] Speaker B: Mr. Hyde's nasty fall.
[00:10:54] Speaker C: I'll leave it at that. So I just want to.
[00:10:56] Speaker B: Everything is great about it. A musical park in the history of mankind.
[00:10:59] Speaker C: My first roller coaster ever was the double loop.
[00:11:01] Speaker B: Double loop. It was everybody's first roller coaster. It was everybody's.
And you just accept it. You just accept it as.
[00:11:07] Speaker C: I know it's not Cedar Fair's fault.
[00:11:09] Speaker B: But that's because you're a liar. You're just an apologist for Cedar Fair. Are they paying you? Are they paying you? How much are they paying you? Who's behind this? Who's behind it?
[00:11:17] Speaker C: I'm getting just mean this.
[00:11:19] Speaker B: You're running the conspiracy. I'm running you and Alex Jones turning the Frogs gay.
[00:11:25] Speaker C: Don't put me in the same category as Alex Jones. But anyways, I just want to be clear here. I ask you what your take on the Cedar Fair Six Flags merger is. And your take is? I'm upset that Giaga Lake is no longer.
Yes. Okay.
[00:11:42] Speaker B: They ruined my childhood.
[00:11:44] Speaker C: Well, as long as we understand each other, that'll take us to the week nine recap.
The Arizona Cardinals came to Cleveland, and they probably should have just stayed home as the Browns were able to cruise to an easy victory. See what I did there? To an easy victory. On a day that the franchise quarterback returned. The Browns won 27 to nothing. We'll start with the Arizona Cardinals, our opponents, as we always do. And we'll start with their offense. Clayton Toon, rookie quarterback, getting his first start.
He looked every bit of a rookie quarterback. Eleven of 20 for 58 yards. You heard that right? Zero touchdowns, two interceptions, five carries for 28 yards.
[00:12:35] Speaker B: Yeah. Just a rough day for him all around. But I mean, what do you expect when you're playing a defense that's a stout of ours and you come in, is this your first game?
[00:12:43] Speaker C: Number one defense in the league is your first game?
[00:12:45] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:12:45] Speaker C: Feels bad.
Arizona's running backs combined 16 carries for 13 yards. That's a 0.8 yard per carry average, in case anyone was wondering.
[00:12:55] Speaker B: Really good.
[00:12:56] Speaker C: That's not really good. It's really bad. It's the opposite of really good.
[00:12:58] Speaker B: Oh, you're an apologist now for the running backs.
[00:13:01] Speaker C: Here we go. Who's paying you?
And then finally, the wide receivers for Arizona combined eleven receptions for 58 yards. Like I said, nobody did anything of note there, so I had to just combine them.
Basically. Their offense was ass.
[00:13:17] Speaker B: Yeah, it was really bad.
[00:13:19] Speaker C: It was real bad.
[00:13:20] Speaker B: It was real bad.
[00:13:21] Speaker C: But I think it's more of a credit defense than their offense, even with the rookie.
[00:13:25] Speaker B: I think it's a little bit of both because Clayton Toon wasn't going nowhere all day, and neither were the running backs. They were on, like, their four string running back, and Clayton Toon is just a.
[00:13:36] Speaker C: Look, he's just the guy that sings the chorus.
[00:13:39] Speaker B: What I was proud about was the fact that for the first time, the Browns played somebody that was not on their talent, skill level, just dominated. They just played their game and they didn't let that get into their heads at all. They played above them all day long. And would 400 have looked more dominating? Sure. But 270, I'll take that as an easy win.
[00:14:02] Speaker C: Absolutely.
[00:14:02] Speaker B: Those don't come around very often in the NFL.
[00:14:04] Speaker C: No.
The offense, not to be outdone for the Arizona Cardinals, the Arizona Cardinals defense had one sack and zero turnovers forced, so they literally did nothing.
And then their special teams actually did nothing because they didn't even get a chance to kick a field.
Um, that's it. That's all I've got for Arizona in this one. That's how poorly they played.
[00:14:29] Speaker B: They were really bad.
[00:14:31] Speaker C: Which will take us to the Cleveland Browns. We'll start on offense. Deshaun Watson, he was back, and he went 19 of 30 for 219 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, three carries for 22 yards.
He looks solid in this one. I mean, obviously he was an inferior opponent. I don't want to hold that against him by any means. I mean, he's still got to play the game, but, yeah.
Would I have liked to see, like a 350 yard pass game? Yeah, absolutely.
But we really didn't need that in this game, so I don't know that they were going to, especially coming off an injury. You're not going to have them throw it 50 times.
[00:15:08] Speaker B: Yeah, I'm never going to talk shit on a win for me with the Sean whole thing is still, we were promised this huge upgrade and these are still the types of numbers that you could get with probably 60% of the quarterbacks in the league if you had traded for any one of them and wouldn't have to give up three first round draft picks.
[00:15:24] Speaker C: Fair. I will say this as far as we're always talking about, is he back or is he close to back or whatever the case may be in his last two healthy games with the team, we're not counting the one where he played 14 snaps and left the game, but he's been 46 of 63, which is good for 73% for 508 yards, four touchdowns, 38 rushing yards, no turnovers and a quarterback rating of 115.45.
So he's been pretty solid in the last two games that he's played the entire game.
[00:15:57] Speaker B: I guess that looks good.
[00:16:00] Speaker D: I want to look at that number after next week.
[00:16:02] Speaker C: Yeah, I'd agree, which I'm sure we'll get more into that when we talk.
[00:16:06] Speaker B: About the I mean, again, if you extrapolate that that's 250 yards and two touchdowns a game.
It's a decent pace, but it's just not. Again, a lot of quarterbacks can accomplish that.
[00:16:19] Speaker C: I think the thing on there that stands out to me more than the yardage numbers because I think the yardage numbers will follow eventually. And same with the touchdowns is the completion percentage. There's not a lot of quarterbacks complete 73% of their passes.
[00:16:32] Speaker B: All right, she's only throwing 63 passes.
[00:16:35] Speaker C: Fair. Next up, running backs for the Browns. We'll start with Jerome Ford because he got the most carries, 20 carries for 44 yards, five receptions for 33 yards. And I said it earlier in the season, I just don't think that Jerome Ford is what the front office and the coaching staff think he is.
[00:16:52] Speaker B: Well, here's the funny thing. Remember last year when Jacobi was around and we go, can we get Nick Chubb 20 carries?
Has anybody seen this guy run the ball? Can we get him 20 carries? And every week now it's like Jerome Ford has 20 carries. Cream hunts got 15 and then Pierre Strong's cleaning up the rest. We're running the ball 30 to 40 times a game.
[00:17:11] Speaker C: Where was this when Nick Chubb was our running back?
[00:17:12] Speaker B: Where was this when Nick Chubb was running back and your quarterback was limited all of a sudden you have this elite quarterback and we supplement it with an actual running game.
[00:17:22] Speaker C: Yeah, I don't know. It really frustrates me. Boney, got something to say here.
[00:17:26] Speaker D: Well, they were saving him for the playoffs, Kenny. They had to keep him healthy.
[00:17:29] Speaker B: The playoffs we didn't make.
[00:17:30] Speaker C: Yeah, it does drive me nuts because that's what we scream all last season. Like, 20 carries. That's the number. Give me at least 20 carries.
[00:17:38] Speaker B: Give me 20.
[00:17:39] Speaker C: And that's not even that much for a running back like Nick Chubb. No, and it wasn't like, obviously he got hurt this year, but that was on a freak play. And it wasn't.
[00:17:47] Speaker B: And it wasn't like Kareem was getting 16 or 18 himself last year. Nick Chubb was getting 1416 carries and Kareem was getting four and five, six A game.
Especially at the end of last year, Kareem Hunt was down to like three and four carries a game. They didn't do anything with him.
[00:18:00] Speaker C: True. Speaking of Kareem Hunt, 44, no, 14 carries in this one for 38 yards in a touchdown. So he did score again. That's good. But, I mean, that's still only like 2.5 yards of carry or something like that. Yeah.
[00:18:13] Speaker B: Look, the yards for carrier isn't great, but here's what I like about Kareem Hunt is I think Kareem Hunt actually leads the league. In the league, not the league, the Browns, in touchdowns. I think he has four touchdowns since he came to the team, which, when you think about, he hasn't been here all year. He missed all the camp.
[00:18:26] Speaker C: He's probably tied with Nick Chubb and.
[00:18:28] Speaker B: He'S leading the league in touchdowns or leading the team in touchdowns. It's a big deal. So I know that he's not putting up the statistics that we would necessarily expect, but I think they are so decided upon that this is going to be running back by committee that they're happy with having three different skill sets in there just based on the personnel package.
[00:18:51] Speaker C: Yeah. And then to round things out, Pierre Strong, three carries for nine yards, one reception for negative seven yards. And I'll say this, you talked about running back by committee, but I think it's a shame that in this game, the last few games, they actually gave Pierre some touches, and in this one, they drastically declined. It ended up favoring Jerome Ford, and I don't think Jerome Ford has done anything to earn those extra carries. In my opinion, Pierre Strong has looked much better, and you should give those extra carries to him and see what happens.
[00:19:24] Speaker B: Well, you got to remember it's not whether he earned them or not, it's whether Aaron Barry drafted him or not. Well, that's the question.
[00:19:32] Speaker C: Yeah, there's that, but yeah. So I don't know. I just think there's a ton of upside with Pierre Strong and he should be used more, but agreed.
[00:19:39] Speaker B: No, I think he's showing flashes. I just think he hasn't got the work. So I'd like to see him continue to get some work.
[00:19:44] Speaker C: Wide receivers for us, Amari Cooper had a solid game. We're going to talk more about him here in just a few minutes. And then David and Joku, four receptions for 26 yards and another touchdown in this one. Another solid game out of him.
[00:19:56] Speaker B: Yeah.
The other thing that's bizarre here is just the lack of involvement of wide receivers. I think outside of Amari Cooper, he's the only wide receiver, I think, that has a touchdown.
[00:20:08] Speaker C: Yeah, no other wide receiver has a touchdown. No, it's wild because we were made to believe before the season started all these weapons. We have all these weapons and the wide receiver room is great and whatever.
I still am a big Elijah Moore fan, but it hasn't translated at all. And I don't know if that's because early on Kevin Stefanski thought he was this offensive genius and could find all these fun ways to get Elijah Moore involved. And then he realized, oh, wait, if I just split Elijah Moore out different ways. And we always try and give him the ball everywhere he goes, the teams start to catch onto that and they can't keep doing.
[00:20:47] Speaker B: And it's also dangerous to do three laterals in the backfield every play.
[00:20:50] Speaker C: Well, yeah, the old triple reverse pass, it only works every once in a while. Typically it's when they're not expecting it. So if you do it every game.
[00:20:58] Speaker B: That'S why they call it a trick play.
[00:20:59] Speaker C: Yeah, but I digress. Yeah, that is a shame that the wide receivers aren't more involved, especially with the departure of DPJ.
[00:21:07] Speaker B: Yeah, there was any week this year that we were going to see another wide receiver involved in a game plan. There was going to be this week because of DPJ out. But to be honest, what did DPJ have? I think 17 or 18 catches on the whole season, which isn't a lot.
[00:21:20] Speaker C: No, he didn't have a lot of catches, but he wasn't there, surprisingly. It was like 78% of the snaps or something like that on offense. He actually had the highest snapshare on.
[00:21:28] Speaker B: Offense, which is why I think he's not here anymore. True.
[00:21:33] Speaker C: We did have a Cedric Tillman sighting.
[00:21:35] Speaker B: It was a sighting. Yeah.
[00:21:36] Speaker C: So again, one catch, maybe one catch for three yards.
[00:21:40] Speaker B: It's a sighting.
[00:21:41] Speaker C: Yeah. And then next up, the defense for Cleveland. Look, I think the Browns listen to our podcast. They should, because last week I said the defense was solid, but not real exciting to watch. Well, they fixed that this week.
Another Herculean effort by the Browns defense. And look what happens when you have an offense that can give you some time to catch your breath and put points on the board in the process. I mean, it's phenomenal what these guys are doing. We'll start with Miles Garrett, like we always do. He was able to get another sack in this one, and now is tied for second in the league with sacks. I believe he also is at or near the top in forced fumbles.
And we might actually finally be seeing the Defensive Player of the Year award season that we've been waiting for.
[00:22:27] Speaker B: Well, you know, what's interesting, too, is this year has been a down year for quarterbacks, so he may even be in the MVP discussion. As it comes down to it, he continues his pace, obviously, but in a lot of years, we've seen a lot of quarterbacks put up gaudy, gaudy numbers, and this year just hasn't been quite the same just yet.
[00:22:43] Speaker C: I mean, hell, he has one more game where he has two or three sacks in a game, and all of a sudden he's all you're talking about. Oh, yeah, speaking about guys getting tons of sacks in a game. Dalvin Tomlinson had three in this way. It was three sacks after the game, and then I checked the official box score and they actually lowered it and gave him two and a half, but we'll say three. Still three sacks for Dalvin Tomlinson. He was a monster in the backfield. Considered giving him dog of the week, but we went a different direction and Grant Delpit was the beneficiary of the half sack, the half sack that was awarded elsewhere because it went to him. And Grant Delpit had ten tackles in this one. So again, was just all over the place, just doing big things. And I'm so excited that Grant Delpit is having the season that we've always wanted out of him, too.
[00:23:30] Speaker D: I feel like he has ten tackles every week.
[00:23:32] Speaker C: Oh, yeah. It's between like eight and twelve.
[00:23:35] Speaker B: He may lead the league in tackles by the end of the season. Yeah, those are little linebacker numbers.
[00:23:39] Speaker C: Yeah. And then Shelby Harris, Jordan Elliott and Zadaria Smith had one sack each in this one, and Sioni Takitake and Denzel Ward had one interception each. And Denzel Ward is having maybe the best year of his.
I mean, that's saying something, because Denzel's been solid since he's been here. I don't think he's had a really down year. The only time he hasn't maybe lived up to what we hoped was because of injury, right?
[00:24:05] Speaker B: Yeah. Tremendous athlete. I think the most Impressive thing I saw was just that when he made that pick, he was in the air for what seemed like forever and contorted his body in order to catch the ball, like, while he was in the air. So he already jumped one direction and then realized he needed some extra room and contorted his body in the air. It feels like he was in the air forever. It's incredible. Incredible.
[00:24:29] Speaker D: I don't know what the game plan was, but it seemed to me that they were targeting Denzel over our backup corner on the other side there. And Denzel just shut everybody down on his side.
[00:24:39] Speaker C: It's a bold strategy. Let's see if it pays off for him, Cotton.
[00:24:42] Speaker B: I mean, if you're a rookie quarterback and you want to make a name for yourself, you go right after Denzel.
[00:24:46] Speaker C: Strength versus strength, baby.
No, but if you remember everyone before the season started, when he got that concussion in the preseason, including us, we're talking about worried whether he should hang it up or not, or whatever the case may be. And I'll say that, safety aside, obviously, we want them to be safe. But safety aside, it's a good thing that he didn't hang it up at that point, because he obviously has a ton left to give to this.
He. Watching him this year is awesome. Yeah, absolutely awesome.
[00:25:17] Speaker B: Again, Miles, we've always known that these guys were great athletes, and it's just now they're finally getting the dude that they're owed, because they've always been good. They just haven't, for whatever reason, haven't caught on to the primetime and the mainstream news cycle. But maybe it's because we're five and three now, so that helps.
[00:25:38] Speaker C: Now, people like us, all winners, all.
[00:25:41] Speaker B: Loved, all loved Clanahan.
[00:25:43] Speaker C: And then next up for the Browns, special teams. Dustin Hopkins missed a field goal this week. Zach, I gotta ask you, are you still full master? You maybe down to half chub. Three quarter chub.
[00:25:57] Speaker D: Well, with the two most important people in my life, I expect perfection. And, yeah, Hopkins let me down this week, but luckily, it didn't really matter.
[00:26:07] Speaker C: Who'S the most important.
[00:26:08] Speaker D: Oh, Christy, my wife.
[00:26:12] Speaker C: Nice.
[00:26:13] Speaker D: Yeah, it's a big bar to live up to.
[00:26:18] Speaker C: How does she feel about this?
She lives up to a day after.
[00:26:24] Speaker D: Exactly.
[00:26:24] Speaker C: Yeah. There you go, Zach. Thank you. Yeah, you're welcome.
Oh, man. No, but. So Dustin Hopkins was two or three field goals, three of three extra points. Another solid day out of him. I know he missed the one, but, I mean, it didn't really matter. Those are the kicks you're allowed to miss occasionally as the kicks where it's like, we don't really need this one.
[00:26:43] Speaker B: You can't make them.
[00:26:44] Speaker C: I know, but I'm saying he's been.
[00:26:46] Speaker B: Incredibly good this year.
[00:26:48] Speaker C: No, but I'm just saying in general. So you've got our previous kicker who just missed every kick anyways. But he especially missed kicks when it mattered the most.
That's the time you don't want to miss. And Dustin Hopkins never misses in those times, at least not to this.
[00:27:04] Speaker B: I'd rather have his numbers come off of 100% for the year on a kick that doesn't matter.
[00:27:09] Speaker C: Right, that's my point.
[00:27:10] Speaker B: You don't want to lose it on a game winner.
[00:27:12] Speaker C: Yeah, that's my point. So on to coaching here. Stefanski, or Stefanik, as we typically call him. Look, we critique this guy week in and week out. I'm not going to do it. This week, the Browns won 27 to nothing. And no matter how bad the Cardinals are, they're still an NFL team, and that was an absolute beat down. So for maybe one week only, because whatever the opposite of the Cardinals are, that's what we play next in the Baltimore Ravens.
But maybe for just this one week, we could do it. And I think we're going to do it. We're going to call him Stefanski.
[00:27:42] Speaker B: Stefanski.
[00:27:43] Speaker C: He's Stefanski this week.
[00:27:44] Speaker B: He's earned his whole name back.
[00:27:46] Speaker C: For a week.
[00:27:47] Speaker B: For one week.
[00:27:47] Speaker C: We'll see how it goes in Baltimore.
What do you think?
[00:27:52] Speaker B: I'm fine with it.
[00:27:53] Speaker C: Yeah, I'm fine with it.
[00:27:54] Speaker B: Look, we're five and three.
[00:27:55] Speaker C: We're five and three.
[00:27:56] Speaker B: We should not be as down as we are. Like, we should be more excited.
[00:27:59] Speaker C: We're not down at all. It just probably sounds like we're down a little bit because we're both sick.
[00:28:02] Speaker B: We're both very sick.
[00:28:03] Speaker C: Yeah, but we're still entertaining the shit out of you. So here we are. Next up, Jim Schwartz. Look, every time you think this defense can't be any better, they go and do something like this.
[00:28:15] Speaker B: They give up.
[00:28:15] Speaker C: No points. Yeah, and look, we got a real tough game coming up this week. So we'll see how the defense holds up against a top tier offense. But for right now, I just want to soak this all in and enjoy it because it's just fucking phenomenal.
[00:28:29] Speaker B: Like I said, it's just so rare that we, the Cleveland Browns, have a game that unequivocally goes in one direction. There was no chance that they were losing that game from beginning to end.
And just to win a game by four or five scores, like, it just doesn't happen here.
[00:28:46] Speaker C: No. And I will say this. We've seen the Baltimore Ravens once already this season, and I understand people may raise an eyebrow when I say this, but, yeah, it was 28 to three, but people forget. That's the week that we started DTR on like a day's notice.
No reps with the first team all week long. And the Cleveland Browns offense turned the ball over twice and gave it to them with like, one was like twelve yards and the other one was like six yards to go, so basically spotted them 14 points.
[00:29:17] Speaker B: The offense was responsible for as many points giving them in that game as.
[00:29:20] Speaker C: The defense, I think more.
[00:29:21] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:29:23] Speaker C: I'm really not that concerned. As far as the Ravens picking apart our defense, I think our defense is going to be just fine in this game. And then next up, Bubba Ventron. Special teams look good, except that missed kick. You got to get your shit together, man.
[00:29:37] Speaker B: The new returner.
Protege. Pro something.
[00:29:45] Speaker C: Pro phase.
[00:29:46] Speaker B: Look, he ran hard. I don't know who that kid is or where they found him, but he runs hard. Looks better than DPJ, even though wears the same number.
[00:29:52] Speaker C: You think DPJ was kind of like, this sucks, man. Nobody's throwing me the ball.
[00:29:57] Speaker B: That might have been why they had him back there, because they were like, here, one of our best athletes, and we can't throw him the ball, so let's at least let him return.
[00:30:03] Speaker C: And he was like, nah, I don't.
[00:30:04] Speaker B: That too. I didn't want it, but, yeAh, whoever that kid is that they brought up this week, he at least ran hard.
[00:30:10] Speaker D: Got up and down the field, got vertical.
[00:30:12] Speaker C: Yeah, it's always good when you're getting vertical.
[00:30:14] Speaker B: Never horizontal. No, horizontal is for sex only.
[00:30:18] Speaker C: Yeah.
So overall on this one, total yards, Arizona 58.
[00:30:23] Speaker B: Wow.
[00:30:24] Speaker C: Yeah. We'll talk more about that in a minute. But Arizona had 58 total yards, Cleveland had 326. 1st downs, Arizona seven, Cleveland 17. Time of possession, Arizona 23 35, Cleveland 36 25. Penalties? Arizona four for 40, Cleveland six for 65, and turnovers. This is the big one that we've been harping on all year, Arizona, three. Cleveland, zero.
So look, let's talk a little bit more about the game. The defense has been phenomenal, like we said. But I want to point out that in this game, they gave up 58 yards, like we just said, 58 yards. That's 174ft. So for comparison's sake, that is less than three singles in baseball. That is only 14ft longer than the width of a football field.
That is less than running down and back on a basketball court. That is about half the length of a soccer field and less than one width of a soccer field. And that is less than the length of one hockey rink.
[00:31:27] Speaker B: And just about twice as size as my penis.
[00:31:30] Speaker C: Yeah, right about there.
[00:31:32] Speaker B: Pretty impressive.
[00:31:33] Speaker C: Good job, guys.
And then real quick, for the defense in the NFL, I'm talking the whole NFL this season. The fewest net yards allowed in NFL games this season. Number one, the Cleveland Browns versus the Arizona Cardinals with 58. Number two, the Cleveland Browns versus the Tennessee Titans with 94. Number three, the Cleveland Browns versus the Cincinnati Bengals with 142. And it takes until number four to get to a different team with the 49 ERs versus the Giants with 150. So to say this defense has been dominant, it's an impressive unit is a complete understatement. Like, it's unreal how good this defense has been.
[00:32:11] Speaker B: Totally impressive all the way around, Jim Schwartz says. I mean, can you just go back in a time machine with me? A year ago, it was the worst.
[00:32:21] Speaker C: I don't want to go back there.
[00:32:22] Speaker B: And we're looking around, these players are going, well, no one's communicating with us. We don't really know what safety is playing 20 yards deep the backfield. We don't really know what the play call are. It's too hashtag fire.
[00:32:32] Speaker C: Joe woods is trending every week.
[00:32:34] Speaker B: Every week. Hashtag Joe woods was trending. So, I mean, to go a year removed from that and look at what this team has accomplished in half a year is just overwhelmingly impressive.
[00:32:45] Speaker C: Unbelievable. Unbelievable. Yeah. And so in other Browns news here, Jed Wills was haught off the field on a cart with his leg in an air cast, and it was announced that he is expected to miss about six weeks. There were no tears, so that's the good news. But he had a high grade MCL sprain. A low grade PCL sprain. Bone bruises.
[00:33:06] Speaker B: Bone bruises.
[00:33:07] Speaker C: Yeah. And they put him bone. You need to help him with that, man. And they put him on short term IR.
So, I mean, I know that we do our fair share of ripping on Jed Wills because he seems like a turnstile out know last week I said that I gave him props two weeks before that. I'll never do that again. And I said that I was pissed at him. And this is where I go back to. I think the Browns all listened to our podcast because then Jed Wills was just feeling super sad.
Basically broke his leg.
[00:33:33] Speaker B: Sure, he is very sad. Look, you never want to see somebody get injured, especially in any kind of serious way. Ronnie's right, like, we have made fun of Jed Wills and talked about replacing Jed Wills a lot on this show and may very well still need to happen. But here's the thing. At the end of the day, you hate to lose a starter at any position.
And whether or not we like it or not, the Browns coaching staff sees Jed Wills is the guy that's best at that position right now. So it's a net negative when you think about losing Jed Wills for any length of time because the hope is that this guy has potential in athleticism and continues to get better. So to have a setback like that, that probably keeps him out towards or even maybe towards the whole rest of the year. Not good. Not good.
You're already a little bit thin on that line. You've had some guys banged up. Obviously Con is out and then we'll talk about knee report a little bit. But Dewan got hurt, so I don't know. They're going to have to figure that out. Offensive line, but you never want to lose your left tackle, period.
[00:34:38] Speaker C: No, but you did mention off air that his replacement for the game played very well throughout the rest of the game, but they were playing the Cardinals. True. So hopefully he can hold up. Who is that? James Hudson that replaced him?
[00:34:53] Speaker B: Yeah, James Hudson. He's the guy who's been around the Browns for a while. He's played every position imaginable, so it doesn't seem like they lose a lot when he comes. Just, it's one of those things like when we talked to John Greco and some of these guys about how hard it is to play different positions along that line. It can't be easy to play them all at a high level. So, you know, there's times where he's going to get caught because that's not what he does every day, no matter how well he plays.
[00:35:21] Speaker C: But on the flip side of that, James Hudson is like the outlier to John Greco's thing. Yeah, I'll do them all as long as the paycheck.
So hopefully Jet Wills has a speedy recovery and we will see him in about six weeks here. Next up, Tito was in town for the game. Made a surprise appearance. Always nice to see know.
[00:35:42] Speaker B: It's kind of sad. We got into the middle of football season and really never talked about Tito a lot. As that Indian season grounding season came to a close, his retirement. Yeah, good to see Tito. We didn't talk a lot about, but, you know, just a classic guy. Someone's going to always be beloved in Cleveland for the things that he did here.
[00:36:03] Speaker C: Him and Jim Schwartz, they need statues.
[00:36:04] Speaker B: Immediately because of those two guys holding hands outside of Brown Stadium.
[00:36:08] Speaker C: Oh, my gosh.
How epic of a statue is that on scooters together? Oh, my gosh.
That's so exciting.
[00:36:19] Speaker B: Where's the logo girl when you need her?
[00:36:22] Speaker C: I'm calling her tonight. It's probably a little Late. I'll call her tomorrow. And then next up, Phil Taylor, who we'll be talking to later this year about the Browns fan Cruise. And he'll also be joining us on that Browns fan Cruise in March of 2024. Smash the guitar this week. So that's pretty exciting.
[00:36:40] Speaker B: Is this guitar smashing thing? Is this getting old?
[00:36:42] Speaker C: I think this probably has to be the last season you do it because they've done it two seasons now and I think it's still kind of cool.
[00:36:50] Speaker B: Way to introduce a guest that's not normally there, but I think that it's.
[00:36:55] Speaker C: Time for them to think of something new.
[00:36:57] Speaker B: Is it as cool as we all think it is?
[00:37:00] Speaker C: No.
[00:37:01] Speaker B: I mean, it rings because of the hall of Fames next door, so that's cool.
[00:37:05] Speaker C: But I think it's something that they. Honestly, if I'm giving my full opinion, I think they should, at the end of this season, they should retire that and only bring it out for special occasions.
[00:37:16] Speaker B: But you need something, right? Because, like.
[00:37:18] Speaker C: No, I agree.
[00:37:20] Speaker B: Minnesota has the skull chant.
[00:37:22] Speaker C: Didn't we used to have a drum line? And then did they get rid of that?
[00:37:25] Speaker B: Who knows what happened to Clooney Brown's drum line? That was never cool.
[00:37:29] Speaker C: Just like, I think there's a different way that you got to come up with something else as far as introducing guests to your point. But I think that the guitar maybe.
[00:37:37] Speaker B: When they smash the guitar like a rocket shoots out of the stadium and just explodes everywhere.
[00:37:44] Speaker C: So you don't want to get rid of the guitar smashing. You want to make it bigger.
[00:37:47] Speaker B: Let's enhance it.
[00:37:48] Speaker C: Okay. Let's do something bigger. Okay. At least you come with ideas. I like that.
[00:37:52] Speaker B: I never come with complaints. I always come with ideas.
[00:37:54] Speaker C: Nice.
But yeah. So that'll round out the recap or it almost rounds out the recap because we got one thing left to talk about, and that's the Burning river sportscast dog of the week, baby.
[00:38:12] Speaker B: Doesn't matter, man. You got to play tough people in.
[00:38:14] Speaker C: The National Football League.
[00:38:16] Speaker B: You got to be ready, and we.
[00:38:17] Speaker C: Got to be the dogs that we.
[00:38:18] Speaker E: Are every time we step on there on Sunday and be ready to attack.
[00:38:22] Speaker C: And don't stop until we're in that locker room.
AlL right, so this week's Burning River Sports gas Dog of the Week is Amari Cooper. Amari Cooper had five receptions for 139 yards, one touchdown, and two of those passes were absolute bombs. That he caught one was in stride. I'm amazed that he wasn't able to score on that one, but I guess those guys were kind of all over him as soon as he caught it. And then the other one was another really nice pass in between a couple of defenders, one covering him high and one covering him low, and he found the soft spot in the defense. And Deshaun Watson was able to hit him for like 48 yards on that one or whatever it was.
[00:39:05] Speaker B: Yeah. Look, the biggest thing I think I give Amari Cooper credit for is just his consistency. All year.
[00:39:10] Speaker C: It seems like this is the stat.
[00:39:11] Speaker B: Line every week with a team that has struggled to find wide receiver targets. Amari is out there every week catching five or six passes for over 100 yards. So he's the only wide receiver with a touchdown this year on this team. So the fact that he continues to put up consistent numbers all year long and has been a dot producer, what else do you want out of your number one receiver?
[00:39:31] Speaker C: Well, I think it speaks to how good Omari Cooper is, too, because he's the only receiver that the other team's got to cover, and he still finds a way to get open. Right.
[00:39:39] Speaker B: And he's done it with three different quarterbacks.
[00:39:41] Speaker C: Yeah. So, bone man, you got anything to say about Coop?
[00:39:44] Speaker D: Yeah, that's kind of where I was going to talk, just how he's performed, even with PJ Walker behind the know, and I feel like he was a safety blanket, maybe besides Najoku, but he made PJ Walker look pretty good. I think in some of those games.
[00:39:55] Speaker C: He just took the passes of PJ Walker through to Omari Cooper. He was a solid quarterback.
Anytime he went anywhere else, it was a whole different story, but, yeah. So, Amari Cooper, this week's burning River Sportscast dog of the week, and that'll take us to the division roundup.
All right, so the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Tennessee Titans on Thursday. Night Football.
[00:40:40] Speaker B: I can't explain this anymore.
[00:40:42] Speaker C: I don't know how Pittsburgh keeps winning. Their team is not that good and they beat us, but their team is not that mean.
[00:40:49] Speaker B: Maybe it's time for us to accept that we're just wrong.
[00:40:51] Speaker C: I'm not wrong.
[00:40:52] Speaker B: Their team's not that good, that Pittsburgh's actually decent.
[00:40:55] Speaker C: I think the problem is they have the best coach in the NFL.
[00:40:57] Speaker B: Their defense is good. I think their defense is good. And we talked about last week, would you rather play Trubisky or Kenny Pickett? And I said Kenny Pickett scares you more. Edit to be fair, when we made our picks, the news at the time was that Trubisky was starting. Kenny Pickett was out.
[00:41:12] Speaker C: Fair.
[00:41:13] Speaker B: But Kenny Pickett did show up on Thursday night. So I think I might have picked it differently if that was the case. But we thought Kenny Pickett was going to miss multiple weeks.
But I don't know. There's something about Kenny Pickett and that defense. Man.
[00:41:28] Speaker C: Listen, we can't make excuses for us anymore. We picked the game wrong.
[00:41:31] Speaker B: I'm not making excuses.
[00:41:32] Speaker C: I'm just saying maybe we picked the game wrong.
[00:41:34] Speaker B: Maybe the problem is we keep picking Pittsburgh to lose and they're not bad.
[00:41:38] Speaker C: They are bad. Shut your mouth. Okay, but what do you think about Pittsburgh?
[00:41:42] Speaker D: They're really bad.
[00:41:43] Speaker C: They're bad. See, he knows.
[00:41:46] Speaker D: You know what I think? Cam Hayward came back this week. That was one of their boys back.
[00:41:51] Speaker C: That was big news. So they basically went full strength when we thought they were going to be injured up. So it was not a good day for us. But we all picked that game wrong. It was all bad day to be.
[00:42:02] Speaker B: The burning rich sports cast.
[00:42:03] Speaker C: Yeah, but then the weekend came around and Baltimore routed the Seahawks 37 to three, which that part feels bad, especially after we just lost to the Seahawks.
But what feels good is myself and bone man were both right in this and Kenny was wrong.
[00:42:22] Speaker B: It just makes no sense that Baltimore had a hard time putting the Seahawks away. We should have beat the Seahawks and then Baltimore routes the Seahawks makes no sense.
[00:42:32] Speaker C: Who had a hard time putting the Seahawks away? You said Baltimore, but you meant somebody else.
[00:42:37] Speaker D: Arizona or Arizona?
[00:42:39] Speaker B: Arizona. Sorry. Yes, they had our dumb in Arizona way.
[00:42:42] Speaker C: Yes, there you mean. Yeah, I agree with you. The NFL is a really weird place.
[00:42:48] Speaker B: It's stupid.
[00:42:50] Speaker C: And then next up, the Bengals beat the Bills at home on Sunday Night Football. And I was the only one correct here. You guys didn't believe me that the Bengals were going to protect that home field and you both picked wrong.
[00:43:00] Speaker B: They did not win one for Jamar Hamlin.
[00:43:03] Speaker C: No, they didn't.
[00:43:04] Speaker B: No. Josh Allen didn't plan all that well and they lost by a full score.
[00:43:09] Speaker C: Yeah. Feels bad for you guys. Feels good for me.
[00:43:12] Speaker B: Feels bad.
[00:43:12] Speaker C: And then Cleveland obviously beat the Cardinals in dominant fashion. And we were all right on that one. We all said it was going to be an easy game. So for the AFC north, the standings are as follows. Baltimore remains in first place at seven and two, and Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Cincinnati, in that order due to tiebreakers, are tied for second and last at five and three.
So it's still a tight race and we got to keep winning. And if we can win this week against Baltimore, that's going to be a huge bonus for us, kind of as we round out the season here.
[00:43:48] Speaker B: Yeah. No, I think I said in the open this week and next week, you have Baltimore and you have Pittsburgh, respectively. And how you fare against these two teams, I think, determines what kind of team you are because these are obviously the class of the division. They're ahead of you in the division. They both continue to keep winning.
So historically, we've played pretty well in Baltimore. Pittsburgh is always the shit show, so we'll see what happens. But I think you get a reprieve in terms of talent after that. You get like, the Broncos coming up and some other teams.
But these two weeks. These next two weeks are going to be very difficult.
But if this Cleveland Browns team can come out on top, I think you can look at yourself and say, we have a real contender on our hands.
[00:44:30] Speaker C: Yeah. And I would say I agree with you. If we go two and O, then I'm really excited for the rest of the season.
[00:44:36] Speaker B: If we go two and O in the next two weeks, I'm going to be so hard.
[00:44:39] Speaker C: Oh, yeah. Full mast. Full mast. But if we go one and one, I'll take that.
[00:44:43] Speaker B: Harder than Dustin Hopkins.
[00:44:45] Speaker C: Oh, man. Harder than Dustin Hopkins or harder than bone man? Thinking about Dustin Hopkins?
[00:44:48] Speaker B: Both.
[00:44:50] Speaker C: All right. Fair.
[00:44:50] Speaker B: Diamond in an ice storm.
[00:44:52] Speaker C: Like a diamond in an ice storm. I like it. I don't like it that you're going to be that way, but I like it. And so for King of the north, and we'll talk more about this later. The updated standings or updated records, I should say me and Bone man both sit at 14 and 14, and Kenny Thunder is just terrible at picking games.
[00:45:11] Speaker B: As twelve and 16 feels bad. Like an orgasm on a subway train.
[00:45:16] Speaker C: Yeah, that's pretty bad. So let's go ahead and take a trip where, you may ask, well, let's take a trip around the NFL.
So, as if things couldn't get any worse for the Giants this season, Daniel Jones has a torn ACL and will undergo season ending surgery. And on top of it, they lost their game this week. Unsurprisingly, so that feels bad.
[00:45:52] Speaker B: They've been listless all year. I don't think they caught lighting in a bottle last year with their playoff run kind of miraculously coming out of nowhere. No one expected them.
[00:45:59] Speaker C: They've been listless, and now Daniel Jones is.
[00:46:08] Speaker B: Ligamentless. They should turn it into a movie.
Yeah, look at this. Giant Seamus isn't bad. It's not good. So they suck.
[00:46:15] Speaker C: You know what's funny is last year, 2022 trick or treat up in Lakewood with my sister in law and brother in law, we're handing out candy, and this adult comes with his kids and he's got a Daniel Jones jersey on. And I just kind of made fun of him. I was like, Daniel Jones? And you remember last year he was having a much better season. Oh, yeah. And at the time, they were in like first place in their division. It was before that everything started going south towards the end of the last year. But I just kind of laughed at him and made fun of him. And he's like, oh, he's way better than any quarterback the Browns will ever have. And I was just like, Daniel Jones.
So, I mean, it just goes to fast forward. The clock's just a few months and it's looking a lot better.
[00:46:58] Speaker B: Cream rises to the yeah.
[00:46:59] Speaker C: So anyways, the team that beat the Giants this week, the Raiders, didn't see that coming. Who cleaned house on Halloween night, firing their head coach and GM? We'd been saying all season long we aren't sure how Josh McDaniel still has a job. Well, he doesn't anymore.
And the Raiders didn't just win this one. They dominated, and they won the first game for an interim head coach, Antonio Pierce.
[00:47:25] Speaker B: Is this the same Antonio Pierce who was a linebacker for the Giants for a long time?
[00:47:28] Speaker C: Yes. So against his former team, won his first game as interim head coach, 30 to six.
Most lopsided win for an interim head coach since like 2014 or something like that.
[00:47:40] Speaker B: Impressive.
[00:47:41] Speaker C: So pretty impressive. And Josh McDaniels won't be getting a game check this week.
I guess he kind of will because he's a coach, so he's still going to get paid his contract. But anyways, someone who does get a game check is Eric Armstead, defensive end for the 49 ERs, and he shared his game check this week on social media, just so everybody could see the robbery. That is taxation. California taxes.
Taxes in general, but especially California taxes.
[00:48:09] Speaker B: Taxation is theft.
[00:48:10] Speaker C: Yeah. So he shared his game check. His game check. He gets paid $393,055 per game. Well, 49.3% of that came out in taxes. So I guess what I'm trying to tell you guys, bottom line here, don't live in California fair.
And we mentioned Josh McDaniels and joking about him. How does he still have a job? All that good stuff. The other joke that we usually make that goes along with that is he'll probably end up in New England with Bill Belichick when this is all done and over with. Well, not so fast. Belichick's seat appears to be getting extremely hot. He started having to answer questions at just about every press conference about his job security.
And in Bill Belichick fashion, all he keeps telling everybody is, I'm just going to control what I can control. And this week we play insert next game.
So it might be the end here, boys. What do you think? You think Bill Belichicks is going to stick around or you think. I know Robert Kraft has previously said that he's going to keep him until he doesn't want to coach anymore, but.
[00:49:14] Speaker B: What do you to.
I think it's a hard question for Clevelanders to answer because if it was.
[00:49:22] Speaker C: Us, you'd be like, get rid of him.
[00:49:25] Speaker B: LeBron comes here and wins one championship. And if LeBron was like, all right, I'll stay here. If I were going to be the GM and the head coach and the owner, we'd been like, yeah, done.
[00:49:33] Speaker C: Sign it.
[00:49:33] Speaker B: Sign it.
[00:49:34] Speaker C: We got a championship.
[00:49:36] Speaker B: So to stare at a guy that won you six or seven championships and go, yeah, time has come. I just can't imagine if Tito had won six World Series while he was here.
[00:49:48] Speaker C: If he would have won one World Series.
[00:49:50] Speaker B: If he had won six, though, can you imagine? We'd be like, you can't retire ever. You want to retire? You can't.
[00:49:55] Speaker C: Sorry. You can retire when you're dead.
[00:49:57] Speaker B: You can retire when you're dead.
[00:49:57] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:49:59] Speaker D: Rain delay conspiracy.
[00:50:00] Speaker C: Yeah, I agree, man. We'll talk about that one day. That was bullshit. But anyways, the Patriots are bad, and they lost to the Commanders this week, by the way.
[00:50:10] Speaker B: Sam Howell is not that bad, but.
[00:50:12] Speaker C: The Patriots are bad. The Patriots are very bad.
Next up here, the QB that we thought we would be playing last week, Josh Dobbs, was traded to the Vikings after Kirk Cousins went down for the season with a ruptured Achilles, and so he had zero practice reps this week. So the Vikings decided to start rookie Jaron Hall. Well, as things typically go in the NFL, Jaron hall got hurt in this game, concussion in the first quarter, and in comes Dobbs. And after a slow start, Dobbs rallied the Vikings to a comfort behind victory. They won 31 28 over Atlanta.
So a couple of things here. First of all, Atlanta has a history of blowing loads.
[00:50:55] Speaker B: I mean, leads.
[00:50:56] Speaker C: Yeah. And then also just wild for Josh Dobbs. Zero practice reps to just come in and win the game.
[00:51:04] Speaker B: It's a lot like Baker last year going to LA.
It's just not something you would expect.
[00:51:10] Speaker C: Right?
[00:51:10] Speaker B: I mean, Josh Dobbs isn't a top quarterback. He had little to no time to repair. As I'm watching that game, I'm thinking, like, what was his preparation? Because there's no way you can retain any amount of an NFL playbook in like two days.
[00:51:23] Speaker C: Well, they talked about it before the. Actually, the lineman kind of called him over, and this was Saturday night before the game, just in case. It was like a just in case scenario. The linemen all got together and sat down with him and said, hey, do you know our cadences and all these things that we've been running all season long, just so you at least can function if you get the game to your point? That alone is basically what he practiced.
[00:51:49] Speaker B: Yeah.
Were they getting in a huddle going, okay, it's going to be a half back trap to the left side, whatever you guys call that. That's what we're doing.
[00:51:59] Speaker C: Bone, what are your thoughts?
[00:52:01] Speaker D: I heard that's literally what happened on some plays where he looked at the receivers and they told him the routes they're about to run. And then they were saying, he's like an incredible, I think it's just a fancy term, processor of information, and he has a great memory, and that's the new pretty intelligent.
[00:52:19] Speaker C: He's such a great processor of information that we traded him for a fifth round pick.
[00:52:23] Speaker B: He is like a rocket scientist.
[00:52:25] Speaker C: Yeah, he did all kinds of things at the science center with all the Browns players when he was here.
[00:52:30] Speaker B: He said that when he retires from research stuff, he wants to NASA Glenn. That's what he wants to do when he retires. Like be a legitimate rocket scientist.
[00:52:38] Speaker C: Yep. But also in this game, Cam Acres suffered an Achilles injury, most likely done for the season, and that's his second Achilles injury in four years. And Cam Acres might be done.
[00:52:50] Speaker B: Cam Acres was kind of done anyway. I don't even know what that guy's season has been after not playing early in the it's Cammakers. Who cares?
[00:53:00] Speaker C: Wow.
[00:53:00] Speaker D: He was never any good.
[00:53:02] Speaker C: Wow. Neither of you guys have any love for this guy. Blowing an Achilles. You're just like, well, he sucks anyway.
[00:53:07] Speaker B: I mean, I feel bad that he blew his Achilles.
[00:53:08] Speaker C: No, you can't take it back now.
[00:53:10] Speaker B: I'd feel bad if I can't take it back now. I'd feel bad if I blew my Achilles. Who else cares?
[00:53:15] Speaker C: I wouldn't. I'd be happy.
Next up, the Chiefs spoiled Tyreek Hill's revenge game against his former team, and the Chiefs won that game 21 to 14. Tyreek only had eight, I say only he had eight receptions, which is good, but for only 62 yards, which is well off his pace this year, and he was not able to find the end zone. And then after the game, on the Chiefs side, Travis Kelsey said that this is the best defense he's ever played with, which is actually a pretty scary thought. When you think about just how the Chiefs have won every Super bowl in the past however many years solely on their offense and scoring more points than their opponents, the fact that they're able to actually shut some teams down now is pretty scary.
[00:53:59] Speaker B: Yeah. I mean, anytime you're shutting down that Miami offense, it's impressive.
[00:54:03] Speaker C: Well, we talked about this off air, though. I think Miami is a bunch of pretenders.
[00:54:07] Speaker B: That's possible, but whether you're pretenders or not, you still can't take away the skill set of a Tyree kill.
[00:54:12] Speaker C: True.
[00:54:12] Speaker B: The skill set of Jalen Waddle, they just keep pumping out 4240 running backs that I've never seen before.
They have skill on an offense and it's impressive. But to your point, maybe their scheme is not all it's cracked up to be because you do see them struggle against better teams.
[00:54:31] Speaker C: Yeah, I think their combined record against teams with their wins came against teams with a combined like seven and 20 something record, and their losses came against teams that are combined 20 some and seven.
[00:54:45] Speaker B: Maybe Mike McDaniels isn't as cool as we all think he is.
[00:54:48] Speaker C: He has good sound bites, though.
[00:54:50] Speaker B: Great something. But maybe he needs to make less of them and less hard knocks and less jokes and TV series and be.
[00:54:55] Speaker C: A better all right, fair Eagles tight end Dallas Goddard has a forearm fracture and will likely be put on season ending IR. Jalen Hurts was also hurt in that game, but was able to finish the game and actually got out of win in that one. So good job on him. I guess I don't really care about the Eagles, though.
Gino Smith is starting to come back down to earth. His turnover numbers have skyrocketed of late and so much so that I got autocorrected to Peter. Peter Carroll had to come out in his press conference this week and defend Gino and say that he thinks he's going to be all right. So some people saying maybe it's time to move on. Guys, is the resurgence over? No, Gino's okay.
[00:55:42] Speaker B: Gino's fine.
[00:55:42] Speaker D: I think he's all right.
[00:55:43] Speaker B: I mean, look at the rest of the quarterbacks in that division.
Gino's fine.
[00:55:48] Speaker C: All right. That's fair.
[00:55:49] Speaker B: And they're going to be competitive because as long as he's there until one of these teams come.
[00:55:53] Speaker D: How old is Gino?
[00:55:55] Speaker B: 30.
[00:55:56] Speaker D: Like 30? Okay.
[00:55:57] Speaker C: Probably right around there. Yeah.
[00:56:01] Speaker B: Gino is one of those guys that because of his path in the NFL, he doesn't take it for granted. I think that he's going to work really hard as long as he has a chance to be a starter.
So I think it's just, well, he's seen it all.
[00:56:14] Speaker C: So it's not going to faze him that people are starting to say stuff. Yeah. Kind of take it in Stride and.
[00:56:18] Speaker B: Say he's heard that since day one when he got in the NFL.
[00:56:21] Speaker C: Yeah. So you know who isn't at the tail end of a resurgence and is in fact just getting started in this league?
[00:56:30] Speaker D: Former Buckeye quarterback.
[00:56:32] Speaker C: Yeah. CJ Stroud.
[00:56:33] Speaker B: I used to hear that.
[00:56:34] Speaker C: CJ Stroud this week threw for 470 yards against the Buccaneers. That broke Andrew Luck's rookie record, and he also threw for five touchdowns. It was an absolutely unbelievable performance. He got the ball with 46 seconds left in the game and two timeouts left. They were down by four, needed a touchdown, had 75 yards to go, and he looked his lineman dead in the face and said, if you give me a little bit of time, I'll make them pay. Well, six plays later, he threw a 15 yard touchdown pass to Tank Dell.
[00:57:05] Speaker B: Tank Dell, by the way, who the fuck is Tank Dell? That guy.
[00:57:09] Speaker C: And they took the lead 39 to 37, and they ended up going on to win by that score. This guy's unreal. Like, it was unbelievable watching this.
[00:57:18] Speaker B: How bad does it feel if you're in that Carolina for office, you're watching.
[00:57:26] Speaker C: And who caught it? Let me ask you.
[00:57:28] Speaker B: Oh, we said he should have been the first big in any draft. He was the best quarterback available, by far the most.
[00:57:34] Speaker C: He's got the best skill set he had everything. I don't know what exactly made anyone think that he wasn't the number one pick in this draft. I don't understand it.
[00:57:43] Speaker B: Oh, he's making a pay now. Look, I think this Texans team is going to be a team that it's going to be a contending team for a mean. If CJ continues to play like this and they continue to add young talent around him, I think they've got Davika. Ryan's down there has kind of turned things around. From a leadership standpoint, they could be okay. They could be okay, especially because you got Jacksonville down there in the South. But the Colts and Titans are in a little bit of a rebuilding stage.
How, how they can compete with Jacksonville, I think is going to be key, but I think they could easily be one of the top teams in a playoff contender going forward after this.
[00:58:21] Speaker C: Absolutely.
Yeah. I just want to keep watching CJ Stroud play. It's a lot of fun watching him play football. And then one last thing, not NFL related, but the University of Akrons dips took home the wagon wheel this week. So suck it, Kent State. Just suck it hard.
[00:58:36] Speaker D: Suck it, Kent State.
[00:58:37] Speaker B: Suck it, suck it.
[00:58:39] Speaker C: That will conclude our trip around the NFL.
Kenny, if you could talk to anybody right this second, who would it be?
[00:58:48] Speaker B: Santa Claus.
[00:58:50] Speaker C: Besides Santa Claus.
[00:58:51] Speaker B: Gary Barnage.
[00:58:52] Speaker C: Besides Gary Barnage.
[00:58:55] Speaker B: A Brownsbacker.
[00:58:56] Speaker C: Yeah, but which one?
[00:58:58] Speaker B: Probably from the town we're playing in, Baltimore.
[00:59:00] Speaker C: There you go. So something that we started doing this year is our Brownsbackers interview series. We wanted to do this series because we wanted to highlight brownsbackers from around the country, not only because they're Browns fans, diehard fans that watch their team Rain or Shine, but also because what a lot of people don't know is these Brownsbackers organizations do a lot of community service and charity work in their respective communities. So we wanted to highlight that. And so with that, let's go ahead and get into the next interview in our series.
[00:59:39] Speaker B: Powered by Riverside FM.
[00:59:52] Speaker C: All right, so this week for our Brownsbackers interview series, we have the opportunity to chat with Adam from the Brownsbackers of Baltimore City. Adam, thanks for joining us. How are you?
[01:00:01] Speaker A: I'm doing well. How are.
[01:00:04] Speaker C: Good, good. Thank you so much. We know everybody's time is valuable, and so we appreciate you taking the time to sit down and chat with us.
So to get started here, why don't you tell us a little bit about your chapter? Where are you guys located when you were established, where you guys watch the games and how many members you have?
[01:00:21] Speaker A: Well, we're currently at 101 members and increasing.
Not everybody can always make it all the time, but, you know, hey, that's okay. We're probably doing about.
Last one was about 40, 45 people that we had show up. We meet at Abbey Burger in Fells Point on a weekly basis.
We were established in 2014.
Being in Baltimore City, we've done our fair share of bar hopping. It seems that sometimes we can't stay at one place very long.
Don't know why that is. But, you know, hey, we managed to find a new place and we've been at Abbeyburger in Fellsport for a couple years now.
We also have another bar that we had to use that we tend to use for our pregames when the Browns play here in Baltimore. And that's nobles that we use for pregames when we have the pregame before the games and the night before.
[01:01:22] Speaker C: Nice.
Yeah. Unfortunately, especially when it comes to division rivals, we hear a lot of the Brownsbackers groups that are out of those cities.
They do a lot of bar hopping as well, but no, one of the reasons we're doing this Brownsbackers interview series is to highlight the Brownsbackers chapters. Not only because obviously you guys are Browns fans, you're super dope, but also because the Browns backers, as a lot of people don't seem to realize, are involved with community service and charity work. So is there any community service or charity work that you guys are involved with out there in Baltimore?
[01:01:59] Speaker E: We do.
[01:02:00] Speaker A: We actually, we raise funds for when we have the games, and what we do is we give donations to the Compassion Place City Mission here, donated with the Lutherans that we donate to them every year, as well as we do give some back home and we do the Cleveland City Mission. So we have a couple of charities that we work with and that do work for the homeless and things like that. So those are our big charities that we like to donate. We figure we like to do one back home and then of course one here locally that we also like to do.
[01:02:37] Speaker B: That's awesome. Yeah, Granny said, I think that's one of the things that gets overlooked sometimes by people just aren't familiar with the Browns backers, is that there's not just this fan base component of it, but there's also this very civic minded component of these groups that want to do well for their communities. So that's great to hear.
[01:02:55] Speaker C: And so are there any upcoming events? I know it's Ravens Week, so are there any upcoming events that you guys are hosting or looking forward are there.
[01:03:03] Speaker A: Are we have two that we are hosting. We have one at Nobles from seven to nine on Saturday night and just found out, actually, that we will be joined by Phil Taylor, who smashed our last week. Yes. And I was at that game. So he'll be joining us on Saturday night. And then, of course, we'll also have some auction items on Saturday that we'll be giving as well. And it's a small donation. And then there's some open bar.
We're working on making sure that the Ohio State Games there so those that want to come in and watch that as well, as long as we can get that broadcast, we're going to have that. And then on Sunday morning from ten to noon, also at Nobles Upstairs, we'll be doing a breakfast get together, drinks, we have a meeting, and then that'll go from 10:00 a.m. To noon. And then again, that's a small amount of money which can be found on our Facebook pages, which is Brownsbackers of Baltimore City Group page. And then those two events will be listed there. And then people can walk over to the stadium together. It's about a ten to 15 minutes walk from there to the stadium. And then, of course, if you no.
[01:04:25] Speaker C: Chance of those Ravens fans attacking you or anything, right?
[01:04:28] Speaker A: Well, it's good to go in groups around here.
[01:04:32] Speaker C: There we go.
[01:04:33] Speaker A: If you aren't going to go to the game, we will be back at Abbey Burger for the game. Watch part of it in Fells Point.
[01:04:41] Speaker C: Nice.
[01:04:42] Speaker B: Do they give you guys like a.
[01:04:43] Speaker A: Banquet room to hang out in during a. It's a small bar. We've got an upstairs area, but they do have the sound up there and it's just kind of individualized for us up there. It's kind of an open area, but usually not a problem with where we're at.
[01:05:01] Speaker C: That's always good when you have your own little section because I know a lot of these groups that have to intermingle with other fan bases. It doesn't typically work out. The Browns fans tend to be a little bit passionate, louder and rowdier than.
[01:05:16] Speaker A: Most, and that does continue. We've had a couple of times we've been talked to about jumping too much because of the age of the buildings. Does tend to bring dust down somewhat, so we try not to. But yes, sometimes we get a little over anxious.
[01:05:37] Speaker B: Now, given you have these big events coming up this weekend for Ravens Week, do you have any kind of idea how many people you're expecting in town for this?
[01:05:45] Speaker A: I know typically what we've gotten, when we've done the pregames before, on, on Sunday before the game, we've gotten typically about 100 people.
And then I've heard it's usually about 150 that typically come for the evening one when that's been done before. So we're hoping that's going to be at least 100 and 5200 there. But it's a big game being how close the records are. And so we're hoping for a lot of people to show up.
[01:06:19] Speaker C: That's a perfect segue for me. We're going to move on to the football side of things.
Start before we get to the Ravens game. We'll start with last week's game. How do you think they looked against Arizona this past week?
[01:06:30] Speaker A: I was actually at last week's.
It was, it was very nice to be at in November, but, yeah, I thought they actually, the defense was just dominant, and I was really excited to see that because I can't tell you how many times in my history that we get an opponent like that and we lay an egg and I'm like, I really just want us to play well and not lose to a team that we shouldn't lose to. And I'll tell you what, we came in there and we did not let up. We did not slow down game from beginning to end. The defense just kept attacking, and that was so great to see. And then the offense started to get it together, and that's what I was wanting to see, too, is that can Deshaun come off that injury? Because I saw him come back off of the first one in the first time, and I could tell he couldn't throw. He couldn't throw. He wasn't ready. And to see him finally start to make those plays and yeah, there's some dust he needs to kick off still and some of the plays, but I'll tell you what, that one to Cooper that he laid right in there.
So pretty.
[01:07:47] Speaker B: So pretty.
[01:07:48] Speaker C: I know which one you're talking about, but even the other one to Cooper as well. I mean, it was just a rope down there in between two was. It was phenomenal to see those throws out of the quarterback, especially with all of the. Can he get back? Can he not get back, whatever the case may be, for at least those two throws. What's funny, he looks like an All Star quarterback. You're right.
[01:08:12] Speaker B: It's like they often play down to their opponents. I mean, I can't remember the last time that we watched a Browns team win all four quarters of the game to where it was never really in question. We always tend to kind of let these inferior teams kind of hang around, hang around, hang around until something really bad happens.
[01:08:28] Speaker C: What kind of happened the week before against the Seahawks?
Seahawks, yeah. But no. So how do you think overall, how do you think the Browns have looked so far?
[01:08:38] Speaker A: This I, again, that hit and miss, like you saiD, I think they've looked good.
The problem is that they just make these little mistakes.
Look, the only game that I'm going to say that probably we should have lost right now is that other Ravens game, and I think we just weren't prepared for it because of the way the decision.
[01:09:04] Speaker C: DTR was playing quarterback and I think he'll be good.
[01:09:07] Speaker A: But the problem is DTR started playing when he said, oh, by the way, you're, you know, I think if he would have had a week of prep, then it may have been different.
I think we easily could have been, what is it, seven and one right now?
But you know what? Hey, we are right now in the playoffs. If the playoffs ended today, we are second in the wild card and our division is in the playoffs, so you can't complain about that. And the two losses we've had were divisional and those are the only AFC losses.
So I think things are looking good.
[01:09:54] Speaker C: Yeah, I agree with you, and it is pretty wild looking at our division especially. I know we just talked about this earlier in the podcast, but the fact that at the beginning of the season, a few games in, everybody was talking about, well, I thought the north was supposed to be this tough division and everybody doesn't look very good. And now here we know midway through and everybody's like, that's the best division.
[01:10:21] Speaker B: Let me ask you, did you grow up in Cleveland and move to Baltimore or have you always been in Baltimore?
[01:10:26] Speaker A: No, I grew up in Cleveland, grew up on the east side, Mayfield Heights, spent most of my time there. Went to Ohio University down in Athens, a little shout out to them.
And then I moved here in 96 after my wife went to grad school, and we kind of found a place in between where we both lived and settled in here and have been here since.
[01:10:53] Speaker B: So that was probably an interesting time to be a Browns fan.
[01:10:55] Speaker A: It was a terrible time.
[01:11:00] Speaker B: How was the head?
[01:11:01] Speaker A: Yeah, well, let's just say my wife was very happy because I kind of stopped watching football and I was very angry.
Not bitter still. About art model? No. Don't mind.
Yeah. Trying to teach people around here exactly what it means, how they lost Indianapolis but lost everything, and we lost Cleveland and kept everything. Wonder how that worked I wrote my share of know we need to keep everything in Cleveland. So, yeah, it was tough. And then to watch them go to the Super bowl, it hurt. It really hurt.
[01:11:43] Speaker C: Yeah. I think you kind of just shared the sentiments that we all had as this thing unfolded. Just anger, resentment, confusion. Confusion. Yeah. Just all kinds of stuff.
But no, speaking of that team that we hate because of everything that they took, let's take a look at this coming week here. What are your thoughts on the week ten matchup with the team that Kenny hates above all others and who resides in your home city, the Baltimore Ravens.
[01:12:12] Speaker A: Yeah, that's all right, Kenny. I'm right there with know it's going to be tough. They are looking really good.
They can run the ball and for a change it looks like they can pass the ball, which is something they hadn't been able to do for a long time.
And so it's going to be a challenge for our defense because the biggest thing is, I think if they can stop that run, I think that'll set us up pretty well.
And our big thing is if we don't make the turnovers.
I hate to admit it, but yeah, Baltimore right now is looking good. They are looking tough. They've destroyed the last two people who I was not expecting them to.
[01:13:02] Speaker B: Know.
[01:13:02] Speaker A: So I'm worried. I am slightly worried, but the way our defense came out last week and if we can stay that way, and I think Deshaun made some good decisions last week. So if he can keep making those decisions, like to see us push the run a little bit more, losing Wills is going to hurt a little.
I mean, I'm always, you know, I really do think that if our defense comes in and plays the lights out game, they can.
Then I think we have a chance. And that's what it's going to come down to. And honestly, I think it's going to come down to Hopkins, too. And that pickup that we so, you know, I think it's going to be a good game. I think it's going to be a hard fought gAme. It's going to be the black and blue division that we are and a lot of beating and I have a feeling a lot of penalties, and I'm looking forward to us being out on top, though. I think that's going to happen.
[01:14:08] Speaker C: You couldn't see it when you said it, but our boardman bone over here was pumping his fist because he was so excited that you said that it was going to come down to Hopkins. Hopkins is like his favorite player on the so with all that being said, you're right, the Ravens are looking good. What is the temperature of the city in that regard? I mean, obviously they're seven and two, so are they talking about Super bowl already or are they trying to temper expectations a little bit and just say, well, let's just continue to get some wins?
[01:14:39] Speaker A: Well, I think if you're asking about the team wise, they're pretty much tempering expectations. Look, Halber has always been good at that. He's like, look, it's a week. We got a long way to go in the season.
If you're talking about the fan base.
I think they're starting to get really excited.
They're always, when they're winning, they're always behind the team and they're always excited about the team. But I think they're starting to get that feeling now after the last two weeks that, hey, we've got a team that's going to be reckoned with and we can go really far. So I think they're kind of keeping that in tow, though a little bit because of what's happened in the past in the playoffs for them. So they have that excitement. Yes. But they know this is regular season.
[01:15:28] Speaker C: So it's a perfect time for the Browns to come in and bring them back down to reality.
[01:15:32] Speaker A: I think they totally need to. Yes.
[01:15:35] Speaker C: Yeah.
[01:15:35] Speaker B: So obviously it's a big rivalry for us. Does it feel the same on your end or do they still look at teams like Pittsburgh and Cincinnati more as their top rivals out there?
[01:15:48] Speaker A: They don't like us, but I think they still unfortunately see Cincinnati and Pittsburgh as their rivals just because as of right now, we really haven't shown that we are ones to do that on a regular basis, whereas they Have.
[01:16:06] Speaker C: And so I guess with that, what are they saying, if anything, about the Cleveland Browns there in Baltimore?
[01:16:12] Speaker A: You know what? Not a lot. I mean, they really kind of are. Well, you know, it's the Browns. The Browns are the Browns. It's no know, it's just the Browns. It's okay.
It's not like we're going to come in and they're expecting us to do big things. And that's why I'm really hoping that we come in and do something big and make them stand up and make them take notice of us. And that's what it's going to come down to this time is, you know what? Hey, let them see that we're for real.
[01:16:43] Speaker E: Sure.
[01:16:44] Speaker B: Hey, let me ask you this off the wall a little bit, but with Harbaugh there, have you guys had any kind of collateral damage from the Michigan cheating, hardball stuff just in Baltimore. Did they talk about that locally?
[01:16:57] Speaker A: Honestly, no. I haven't heard anything about that. It's a different, you know, a hardball, but it really hasn't come in to play around so fair.
[01:17:11] Speaker B: I was just curious you'd hear that before. We would probably.
[01:17:15] Speaker C: And so, Adam, before we get going, we did want to mention that we are brought to you by who, Kenny?
[01:17:22] Speaker B: Which one?
[01:17:23] Speaker C: I'll finish that. We're brought to you by seaside events as the official cruise event provider of the Cleveland Browns and organizer of the Browns Fan Cruise. And so we just wanted to say there is a competition for Brownsbackers organizations out there for the Browns fan Cruise to get signed up for that. Do you know if anybody from your chapter has signed up for the Browns fan Cruise at this moment?
[01:17:48] Speaker A: Unfortunately, no, not at this.
Know, we've talked about it a little bit and we're hoping maybe somebody will still be able to get on board, know, we'll get some numbers in.
Haven't heard we. Like I said, I've heard some talk. I've heard some talk and there's interest, but I don't have any numbers yet.
[01:18:07] Speaker C: Yeah. So there's still plenty of time to get in on that. And honestly, there's plenty of time to climb that leaderboard and take the lead. So just have them. If anybody's interested, go to BrownsfanCruise.com and click on the Brownsbackers logo to see what the details. Please do.
[01:18:24] Speaker E: It's going to be a great cruise.
[01:18:25] Speaker A: A lot of great players coming on board.
[01:18:28] Speaker C: Oh, yeah. We're excited. As I had mentioned to you before, we're interviewing all of them, and then we're also McIng several events on the Browns fan Cruise, including the opening day and closing day pool parties and a live session on day three. So it'll be a good time. But real quick, is there anything else that you want to say to Cleveland? Fans that maybe have moved away from Northeast Ohio are missing their fellow Browns fan and are potentially looking to join a Brownsbackers chapter.
[01:18:57] Speaker A: Look, the biggest thing is the chapters are all over.
I think if you're sitting at home, and I've had plenty of people who even still halfway through the year, they're coming in going, man, I am so glad I found you. I was just sitting at home or I was sitting at another bar. I'm telling you, there is nothing like having fellow fans at a bar that you can share with that. They understand your misery. They understand your pain and they can celebrate the successes with you. And you're not doing it alone. You're not doing it with somebody who maybe doesn't care as much. And there are clubs all over. And I'll tell you what, if there is not a club local to you, it only takes a few members to start one because you will find other Browns fans that need a place to go.
[01:19:48] Speaker B: Well said.
[01:19:49] Speaker C: Well said. Yeah. And that's why I let you do it, because I couldn't have said that any better.
But listen, Adam, the last thing I need from you before we sign off here is you didn't give it to me when you were talking about the game this week. What is your score prediction for the game against the Ravens?
[01:20:04] Speaker A: I am looking at a nail biter. I am looking at probably about a 27 24 end score. Cleveland on top.
[01:20:17] Speaker C: Hell, yeah.
[01:20:18] Speaker B: Like it.
[01:20:18] Speaker C: Way to go. Yeah, I like that. I think it'll be a little bit lower scoring, but I still like that. I like that. That's a good prediction. But listen, Adam, it's been awesome having you. Thank you so much for joining us. We really appreciate it. And go Browns.
[01:20:32] Speaker A: My pleasure. Thank you guys so much. Go Browns.
We are the brownsbackers of Baltimore City and you are listening to Burning river sportscast.
Go Browns.
[01:21:11] Speaker C: Nice time. Talking to Adam with the Baltimore City, the Brownsbackers of Baltimore City.
[01:21:16] Speaker B: You know, you talk to some of these Browns backers this year and you see some of these guys in some of the cities that are like rival towns. And Adam didn't seem too bothered by it. I mean, he seemed like things were pretty.
[01:21:26] Speaker C: He actually seemed kind of upbeat about his plate.
[01:21:29] Speaker B: When we talked about our friend in Pittsburgh, he was kind of like, this is kind of hard.
[01:21:34] Speaker C: It's just tough being like, I want to be a good Brownsbackers group, and we are a good Brownsbackers group, but it's really difficult. It's really hard.
[01:21:41] Speaker B: Adam was like, high energy, high motor. Let's get started.
[01:21:44] Speaker C: In 2014, we got 101 members and growing. So come on out.
[01:21:47] Speaker B: Done. Yeah. Great interview.
[01:21:48] Speaker C: Great interview. Yeah. Good job there.
So that takes us to the burning of a sports guest hot take hotline.
All right, don't forget to call and leave your hot takes on the hot take hotline. Remember, these are hot takes. We want hot takes.

[01:22:28] Speaker C: Kenny, you know what time it is?
We probably it's time to make money. The only way that we can at this point.
[01:22:35] Speaker B: Take your clothes off on camera no.
[01:22:37] Speaker C: We'Re going to take a quick revenue break and then we'll get back here. Talk about talk with Browns alum Gary Barnage and then preview the week ten matchup with the Ratbirds.

[01:24:47] Speaker B: What happened?
[01:24:49] Speaker C: All right, before we get into the week ten preview, let's take a few minutes to talk to another Cleveland Browns legend that will be joining us on the Browns fan cruise.
[01:25:08] Speaker B: Powered by Riverside FM.
[01:25:22] Speaker C: All right, so our next guest here is actually a hero of the show. The dude seemed to always turn out a big play when the team needed it the most. When he was playing for the Browns, his career stats include 178 receptions, 2258 yards, 14 touchdowns. He was a Pro Bowler. He tied for the most touchdown receptions in a single season for a tight end in Brown's history with none other than Ozzy Newsom at Nine. The man has dated WWE Divas and competed on the Amazing Race, but let's let him tell you all about that. Please welcome number 82 on the field and number one in your hearts. Here he is. Big play. Gary. Barney.
[01:26:03] Speaker E: How are you? I'm doing great. I appreciate you having me on.
[01:26:06] Speaker C: Yeah, no problem. No problem. We appreciate you being so can I call you BPG or do you prefer Gary?
[01:26:13] Speaker E: Whatever you would like.
[01:26:15] Speaker C: All right, I think I'll mix it up.
[01:26:18] Speaker B: We'll go back and forth.
[01:26:19] Speaker C: Yeah. But anyways, again, thanks for joining us. Now, before we get started and get into some of the questions that we have for you, we have to talk about something, an event that we're both going to be attending coming up next spring here. So you're going to be on the Browns fan Cruise in March of 2024. That is confirmed. That's big facts for big play, Gary.
And you're going to be on that Browns fan Cruise. We're going to be on that Browns fan cruise. We're going to be MCG events on the Browns fan Cruise. Just having an all around great time. So can you tell our fans a little bit about the Browns fan Cruise?
[01:26:56] Speaker E: Yeah. So the Browns fan Cruise is going to be amazing experience. I've actually done fan cruises before with my previous team when I played in Carolina, so I'm really excited that Cleveland is doing a alumni. So a lot of it's more of retired players, but you're going to get your true look of how football players think because you can actually sit down and pick their brain when it comes to the game of football. And I think that's a different atmosphere than you'll ever experience because you could be able to ask questions on why did this happen? How do they run plays here? How does this work? And then you get a full, in depth explanation on a hands on experience with the players. And I think they're all going to be great. I'm looking forward to it. And you get to actually meet us and figure out who we are as people, not just as athletes or players.
[01:27:44] Speaker C: Hell yes. And that's something, honestly, not a lot of the alumni have touched on yet, that we actually get to ask them about specific plays or specific things that happen throughout your career and you just want to know the story of this or that, know whatever went down. So something that's going to be pretty cool. So let's get into your story now. I'm sure we'll come back to the fan cruise here later.
So let's start with college. You played at Louisville, right?
[01:28:11] Speaker E: That is correct.
[01:28:11] Speaker B: Is it Louisville or Louisville?
[01:28:13] Speaker E: It's Louisville. Okay, Louisville.
[01:28:17] Speaker C: All right. Got it. That's Ohioans. We don't know how to pronounce.
[01:28:22] Speaker E: Boy, everybody says Louisville, Lewisville, but when you go to Louisville, it's Louisville.
[01:28:28] Speaker C: Got it. So when we want to blend in.
So tell us about your time there.
[01:28:33] Speaker E: Yeah, so Louisville was a great experience. I played four years there. I got to play as a true freshman. I was on some of the best teams in Louisville history, so I think it was perfect storm. And a lot of that credit goes to Bobby Petrino. I know he has some ill will in the league, but as a college coach, I could not give him any more credit for getting me to where I was because he knew how to get the best out of players. He was not the type of coach that would be, oh, I'm going to go off all five star recruits. He was going after two, three star recruit guys that he knew wanted to work and were hungry, and that's what he built his philosophy of recruiting. Now, he still got to some of the big names, but he went after guys he knew that he could help mold into the player he wanted to be. And I think that's a true testament to who he was as a coach, and it showed with his time at Louisville. He had two stints there and two stints we got the BCS bowls. So I think he has tremendous success there and seeing big things now with Braun there now beating Notre Dame and six to no and all that kind of stuff because he was under that tutelage of Petrino as well. He was my offensive coordinator and quarterback coach when I was there, so A lot of history there, and I'm really excited about the way Louisville is changing right now back into the positive.
[01:29:45] Speaker C: Nice. And who was the quarterback there when you played?
[01:29:48] Speaker E: So Brian Brahm, who is now the offensive coordinator at Louisville? His brother.
[01:29:52] Speaker C: Okay, got you. Nice.
So from there, obviously, you were drafted by the Panthers in the fifth round in 2008.
We're Browns fans. We don't worry about the time with the Panthers. We understand that you can't just be with the Browns your entire career, but tell us a little bit about your time, just briefly with the Panthers. I know you spent, what, three years there?
[01:30:14] Speaker E: So I actually spent five years in Carolina, but one of them I hurt my ankle and was on IR for a year. So I dislocated my ankle and missed a year and they signed me back to a one year deal because that was in my contract year and I got a very fortunate situation, which is how I ended up in Cleveland. So Chaczynski was our offensive coordinator and I came back from my injury and so I was the second tight end going in. I thought I was going to have opportunity to be the guy, but they traded for Greg Olsen, so I never got that opportunity. And then when Chaczynski got the head coaching job in Cleveland, he reached out. He said, hey, gary, I want you in Cleveland because I've seen what you can do. Because I was the second tight end in Carolina and I did a lot of the pass blocking and run blocking for the team while Olson ran the routes. So he's like, I want you here, I want you to. I want to try and get you in Cleveland. I want you to do big things here. And I took him at his word and I went to Cleveland and the rest is history. But it took me some time to get my ability to start because I was not ever given a true opportunity for a few years in Cleveland and.
[01:31:17] Speaker B: Big things you did real quick just to touch on the Carolina time, you get a chance to play with Cam. Do you have any good Cam Newton stories?
[01:31:28] Speaker E: Not really, honestly, because I only got to play with Cam really for one year because the other year I was hurt. So I didn't really get to play and learn and see was I was rehabbing most of the time.
I think my time in Carolina, Cam was good. I think Steve Smith, he gets a lot of hate, but Steve Smith was an amazing person and I actually got to play with my all time favorite player growing up and Julius Peppers because I played defensive in high school. So I actually got to play with him in Carolina, which was awesome. And then one thing I learned in Carolina that led me into Cleveland as well was I wasn't getting to play a lot of tight end starting out and I ended up leading the team in tackles one year in Carolina as special teams because I want to be on the helped and I actually play special teams in Cleveland as well. So I think that's a testament to most guys out there that don't understand that in football. The more you can do that is not a false statement. The more you can do, the easier it is to stay around because special teams is a huge part of the game.
[01:32:33] Speaker C: For sure.
[01:32:34] Speaker B: Can you talk about just the transition from you said you played defensive end in high school. When did that move happen to be able to play tight end?
[01:32:43] Speaker E: So I played both ways in high school, so I played tight end and defensive end, but I played predominantly defensive end. I came in and played tight end some, but we were a run first team, so I was always blocking. I wasn't doing a lot of catching and obviously I was a big body. I was six, 6215 my junior year of high school and I didn't gain anything going to my senior year and I actually played my freshman year in college at that. But DM was always my favorite thing just because I like to play defense, I like to go after the quarterback and it was just a lot of fun. And I think that helped transition for special teams because that's what you're doing with special teams. You're going down, making tackles, breaking down. So that background playing defense then really helped that. But the transition that tied in really fully happened when I got to Louisville.
[01:33:28] Speaker B: Do you have any thoughts just around how special teams has evolved in the last recent years in the NFL in terms of how they've kind of made that?
[01:33:38] Speaker E: They're trying to make it obsolete. Yeah, they're trying to make it obsolete, which I think is terrible.
I understand that they say everything is about safety, but I don't think any of it's actually about safety.
I think it's just optics to make it look like safety, and it's not really. I despise the you can fair catch anywhere inside the 25 and get at the 25. I think that's so bad. It takes away the gamesmanship of a game and trying to sky kick and kick them deep and then tackle them deep inside the 25. You just take all that away and you're never going to see another Devin Hester or Josh Cribs type of guy ever again because they're taking all that away. And I think that's sad because that's a huge part of the game and it's super exciting part of the game.
[01:34:23] Speaker C: It was always way more exciting when just any given kickoff, somebody's going to break one.
You kind of touch on a good topic here. I had no idea this was going to go here, but tell us a little bit more about just your thoughts on player safety and things like that. You kind of mentioned you think that it's not all what they say it is, so can you elaborate on that at all?
[01:34:48] Speaker E: Yeah, I have no problem. I don't want to get you in trouble, but I have no problem talking.
[01:34:52] Speaker C: I have no affiliations that I need to keep.
[01:34:55] Speaker E: I think a lot of it's just optics with the little helmet things they wear in training camp, it's optics that make it look like they care. If you actually cared, you have them on all game, every game. You wouldn't just do it for training camp because if you're wearing it in practice in the training camp and then you take it off and go and hit in a regular season in games, you just defeated the purpose. You're just trying to protect guys from getting injured in training camp, but you don't actually care during the games. So I think a lot of it's just an optics aspect. Hey, looks like we care and people stop talking about it. But there's so many other things. If they actually cared, as you see, we wouldn't have turf fields where guys are tearing their knees. We don't have all grass fields. But that shows you they don't care as much. Again, a big thing with the concussions that did not become a big deal until the movie concussion came out. It was never brought up and that was four years into my career. So there was never any issue. Nobody ever talked about concussions. But as soon as they made a movie about it and it got in the public eye is when it became.
[01:35:52] Speaker C: A big and it's kind of weird because it feels watching the NFL and the way they talk about things, it's almost like, yeah, we fixed all, it's all better now, but clearly not because they happen all the so correct.
[01:36:07] Speaker E: And that's why they have the blue tent now, so they can't actually show you what they're working.
[01:36:13] Speaker B: I mean, do you have thoughts about that? Mean just as a player, is that something that given all the information you have today, would you have made different decisions, maybe not have played football? Or was it always just there's an assumed risk because it's a dangerous game.
[01:36:29] Speaker E: So honestly, I think it's an assumed risk. If you're going to play football, you know what you're signing up for. You have the ability to have injuries and you're taking on that thing. That's why I don't blame the NFL for that stuff. I think they get attacked by everybody because of the injuries and stuff, but the players are signed up for the things. Yes, you can try and make things safer and stuff like that. I don't think removing special teams is a way to make it safer. I think it's the development in better helmets, obviously, you can say better tackling and stuff, but the game is so fast and so hard yes, guys need to keep their heads up, but you never know what's going to happen. There's so many times guys lower the helmet just to get ready for a hit and they get hit in the helmet.
It's just random things happen. It's a violent game and it's always going to be a violent game unless you try to make it where it's no longer tackle. TheRe's only way it's not going to be violent. So I think you're always going to have issues when it comes to injuries, and I think that's an inherent risk that us players take upon us whenever we decide to play football.
[01:37:26] Speaker C: Yeah, well said. Obviously none of us ever played at your level, but it felt that way even growing up. We started to hear when we were in high school about all this stuff with concussions and whatever else, but it's like when you just know, like, yeah, I could get hurt and you just were hitting me in the head nonstop. Of course I could get a concussion.
[01:37:48] Speaker B: And you just see less and less kids coming out for football every year. It's harder to field teams, especially in small communities, than it ever has been.
[01:37:54] Speaker E: I would say the only thing that I would like to see more of is just more of the after the retirement health stuff for players because again, there's no tests for CTE. Only way, you know, is when they pass away. So finding a way to help former players in that aspect when they're done playing, because you only get a certain amount of time where they take care of you with medical benefits and stuff like that, but then after that you're on your own. So I think finding a way to balance it where the former players are taken care of as well, because that's when those issues are going to hit more. You're going to have the knee replacements, the hip replacements, you're going to have the head issues and all that stuff pop up later in your life versus early in your life, and that's when you need that help versus right when you're done. So I think finding a way to balance that where you can help players later in their life is a huge aspect that I think needs to be addressed more.
[01:38:49] Speaker C: But I know that stuff that they discuss in the CBA and those things. Do you have any ideas as far as kind of putting you on the spot here, but do you have any ideas as far as what they can do in order to achieve that level of coverage for the rest of their lives?
[01:39:08] Speaker E: So the tough thing is with the CBA is it's mainly just active playeRs. They're negotiating for. They're negotiating for the former players, too. But the active players have more of a vocal role in that because they're playing. And honestly, when you're playing, you're not thinking about the retired players, you're thinking about the players that are playing right now and the benefits you can get while you're playing. But everybody's eventually going to be a former player, and I think that's one thing that you don't really think about that until you're done. Like, oh, I wish we would have fought more for the retired players or the guys before us because we really could have helped us when we were done, too. But in that moment, everybody's just thinking about the current, and I think that's the hard part with the CBA is trying to find a way to balance from the union side is trying to find a way to balance. Hey, we need to take care of both. How do we do that? Because usually the NFL is only going to give you one or the other. They're not going to give you both. So you have to pick and choose. And most of the time it's usually going with the current players because that's the most vocal on who has the most say at that point.
[01:40:10] Speaker B: It doesn't seem like the NFL is having any trouble raising money at this point. So I would think that there's some way to create some kind of fund for players, I'm sure.
[01:40:19] Speaker C: Yeah.
So we did get off track a little bit, which is fine. It's a great discussion there. I mean, that's all stuff that we're very interested. I know Kenny has said multiple times throughout the season, if they really cared about player safety, they'd be wearing, what do they call the skull caps or whatever they are.
[01:40:36] Speaker B: Yeah, just if they're saying, I mean, they've all these analytics back that say that they've reduced concussions during practice and training camp by 50 or 60%, whatever it is, by position group. It's like, well, why aren't we wearing them during the games? I mean, if you're saying they're that effective and we care that much, why would we not just wear them all the.
[01:40:55] Speaker C: You were, you mentioned that you came over to the Browns with Chadzinski, so tell us a little bit about your time with Cleveland.
[01:41:04] Speaker E: So, yeah, when I came over with Chud, I was sort of giving a little false pretense that when I came over, he's like, hey, I want to make you like Greg Olson. So I'm like, I'm super excited. Okay. I'm going to get an opportunity to get all these balls and all that kind of stuff. And then I get there and Jordan Cameron becomes the Greg Olsen and I become blocking again, which is fine. I love Jordan Cameron. He's actually a member of my nonprofit, so I love Jordan. He's awesome. There's never a fault with Jordan. That's just what the coaches went with and he produced. He went to the Pro Bowl. He ended up getting a good payday in Miami. And then obviously he had a lot of concussions and he had a lot of injuries where he got injured and stuff, which is unfortunate. You don't wish that on any player. And that's when I actually finally got an opportunity because Jordan went down in the year before he went to Miami and I got a chance to come in and I made some key catches to help us win some games. And that's when they decided, okay, we're going to let Jordan walk. We're going to give him an opportunity. And that's when I was finally given an opportunity to start. And this was going into my third year at Cleveland. So this is my second head coach at that point, actually.
Second head coach, yeah. And I think that three head coaches in four years.
[01:42:18] Speaker C: Oh, man. It seems to be a recurring.
No, but that season that you're talking about, when Jordan went down and you stepped up, I think that's where you earned with us the moniker Big play Gary, because it literally seemed like every time we needed something, every time we needed a first down to ice a game or was, you showed up. So it was pretty wild to watch.
So along with your time with Cleveland, do you have any advice that you can give to current Browns players, especially like the younger guys?
[01:42:59] Speaker E: I would say current advice.
Just know the fans are going to be behind you no matter what's going on, even if you're in a spell or not. Because, again, I was on a team that won one game and we are still selling out.
Respect your fans. Fans are going to be there for you. Try to do more with the fans. And that was one thing I was big about, was trying to give back to the fans. I did a movie giveaway every week during the year where I take fans to the movies. I bring some players and I'd take care of it. I wanted to give back because they're supporting us. So I want to show that it's reciprocated. And I would say just stick with it. Things can get better. Things can always get worse. Trust me. I know, if you ever talked to Joe Thomas, Joe Thomas been through some things, too, and things can always be a lot worse. And right now they're doing well. They have some unfortunate injuries, but just stay the course. Things can always get better and will get better.
[01:43:53] Speaker C: And to that point, I know we can get a little bit critical at times, but as soon as we win some games, everybody's. We're right there and all wounds are healed and we're behind the team 100% and we're ready to roll.
So another question I had for you. With your time in Cleveland, kind of spending time with the franchise, you become like a family almost with your team and your community, for that matter. Do you have a favorite off the field memory from your time in Cleveland?
[01:44:25] Speaker E: Favorite off the field?
Probably a couple. Just because obviously I love doing the movie giveaways with the fans and players that come out. I think that was awesome because fans actually got to know us players and talk to us, and then we see a random movie that who knows if it's their type of genre or not, but then you just get to interact with us, and that was a blast. And then I would say the Halloween parties were fun at Joe Thomas's house. One of them. One of the years we had it at my house and then doing the events with the teams, I think those are huge things, like just the team bonding stuff, like, we went paintballing as a team and stuff like that. I think doing that helps build the camaraderie of the team and brings everybody closer even when things are going tough. Like, hey, you might have had a bad year last year, okay, we're going to bring together and try and rally around each other. I think that's probably the stuff I cherish the most versus stuff that happened in a game, because that's lifelong friendships you form with guys when you're doing that type of stuff and building that relationship with everybody.
[01:45:29] Speaker C: Yeah, for sure.
[01:45:32] Speaker B: Could you take a quick step back? I just am curious for you personally.
Obviously, you played both sides of the ball in high school, worked your ass off on special teams to make sure that people were seeing what you were doing and the talent you had.
Was there a specific point in time or a coach or mentor somebody that kind of put that into your head, that you had the potential that it takes to play in the NFL? When did that become a reality for you?
[01:46:00] Speaker E: I think as a kid, I always wanted to play professionally in baseball because baseball is my first sport, and then basketball. Football was actually my least favorite sport growing up. I actually only played it for two years before my sophomore year of high school because I focused on baseball and basketball. I was like, I'm not having fun with football. And then I missed it my freshman year of high school and went and started playing my sophomore year high school. And I think getting a letter from Louisville going from my freshman year spring football tape to going into my sophomore year start of it, I got a letter from Louisville just off of spring football tape and I ain't played football in a year and I didn't play at all that freshman year. So that gave me an opportunity. I can get to college to think, okay, I have an opportunity to get college so I can at least get my college paid for and be one of the first in my family to ever graduate from college.
And so that's when I knew that. And I think once I got the college, I would probably say probably my tight end coach Greg Nord in college really put in my head that there's an opportunity because my freshman year I got to play as a true freshman. Then I started as a sophomore, junior and senior at Louisville. And then I think my junior year, my first two years, I didn't get a ton of catches in Petrino's offense. The tight end doesn't. And then I started getting a little more my junior year. And then my senior year we had Patrino left. And that's when I really blew up as a receiver. I ended up having like 50 some OD catches as a senior in college. And I think that's when I really knew, okay, well, now I truly have an opportunity to be, because going into my senior year, I was already a watchman on the John Maxey Award and I hadn't got a lot of, I was, that was basically off of blocking and a couple catches. So just seeing that and then nor really harping that, hey, you have the opportunity, you really got to dive in more. And I think that's what really drove home that opportunity. That, okay, I possibly can get to the NFL. And then that's when everything changed. Because I wanted to play professional in some sport. I just assumed it would have been baseball.
[01:48:04] Speaker C: Yeah, you would think they would know after your freshman year because I'm pretty sure you had seven catches and four touchdowns your freshman year. So they should have known. He's big play, Gary. He always scores.
[01:48:16] Speaker B: He only catches.
[01:48:20] Speaker C: No. So again, a great career all around college, NFL. You're an absolute legend in our eyes, BPG. But for most guys, they kind of get this sort of whole second life after football. So can you tell us a little bit about what you're up to today. I know I mentioned earlier, I heard you're dating Divas. You're competing on Amazing Race. Can you tell us a little bit about both of those?
[01:48:43] Speaker E: Yeah. So I did the reality show WWE Divas. I just did one episode, just a little thing, just something different to try. I actually did that when I was playing. I was actually in Cleveland when I was playing. During that.
[01:48:56] Speaker C: Who'D you date?
[01:48:57] Speaker E: It was Summer Ray at the time. I don't know what her name is now. And then it was. What was her name? Eva Mendez, I think not Eva Mendez. Eva something. I don't remember what her wrestling name, the last name was, but it was like a love triangle type phone.
[01:49:15] Speaker C: Get on that.
[01:49:17] Speaker E: It was like a love triangle aspect.
[01:49:20] Speaker B: Was it Rosa Mendez?
[01:49:21] Speaker E: Rosa Mendez. I knew it was Mendez.
So it was like a love triangle aspect where I went on a date with both of them, all that kind of stuff. But again, like, I tell people reality television is not real.
[01:49:32] Speaker C: I was just going to ask. It's reality TV. So how real was it? Not at all.
[01:49:37] Speaker E: Reality television is not real. I will tell you in all reality television, other than, like, I will say the Amazing Race, that's legit, what was happening. We'll talk about that. But when you get to drama stuff, drama stuff is fake and fueled. It's not, actually.
[01:49:52] Speaker C: So the Bachelor and Bachelorete, that's all not real.
[01:49:56] Speaker E: Sorry to burst anybody's bubble, but my.
[01:49:58] Speaker C: Wife is going to be so disappointed.
So, yeah, you mentioned it, though. The Amazing Race. Tell us about that.
[01:50:05] Speaker E: So the Amazing Race is actually. It's a funny story how that actually came about. So me and D'Angelo Williams, sorry, he was on the Steelers. I know, guys, but play with me in Carolina. So we had a great relationship from then. We were actually in South Africa together and visiting one of our buddies who was living in Africa, and he brought up the Amazing Race or like a travel show type thing, and he's like, gary, would you ever do that? And I was like, yeah, I would love to do that. And I asked D, I was like, d, would you ever do that? He said, yeah, do that. Little to be known. Six months later, they're casting, and I'm like, hey, D, we're going to try out for. We're going to put a tape in for the Amazing Race. He's like, what? I was like, yeah, back in South Africa, you said you would do it. So now, because we're such close friends, he's locked in. So now, we were actually at Disney when we made our video and sent in the video, and they're like, we love it. We're going to fly you out to LA and do interviews with everybody. So they flew us out. We did all the interview stuff, and then now you're just waiting to find out if you get picked. They call us again. We happen to be at Disney again, and they call us and let us know we made. And at that point, I think the realization that for D'Angelo has like, well, now I got to do this.
And then led us to going on Amazing Race. The crazy thing about it is it took us two years for that thing to air. So two years. We couldn't talk about it with anybody because of COVID hitting and stuff. So they waited everything, and they waited two years before they aired it because we filmed that in 2018.
[01:51:40] Speaker C: So was it weird when you filmed that? Was that post playing career?
[01:51:46] Speaker E: Yeah, that was a year and a half after retirement.
[01:51:49] Speaker C: Okay. I was going to say that has to be weird because they probably put information up there that's since not accurate anymore and whatever else, because it's a two year delay. But, yeah, I mean, that's a crazy story. Yeah, we'll do it.
[01:52:01] Speaker E: So would that be like, D. Now if I ask him to do something, he's like, I'll let you know, or I'll get back to you. He doesn't give me a yes because he knows if he says yes, he's locked in.
[01:52:11] Speaker C: Yeah.
[01:52:12] Speaker B: What was the craziest challenge or thing that you guys had to do on that show?
[01:52:15] Speaker E: Well, I wouldn't say the craziest. The worst was the watermelon stacking. It was so bad because you have to throw so many watermelons.
[01:52:23] Speaker C: You said that.
[01:52:25] Speaker E: So you had to take these watermelons from the back of a truck, and they had this little area, and you had to make a triangle. So it's ten. 987654 all the way up. So it's ten across, ten across, then eight, nine, eight all the way. And it was terrible because the crazy thing is, I prepared. Watching previous seasons, I had never seen a show before. Well, there was an episode where they did that previously. I was like, this looks boring. And I skipped it. So they literally tell you how to do it. And I did not know that. So we did it. And I'm six. Six. D'Angelo's five one. Not really five one, but I always got a joke on. But so my back is on fire having to bend down every time and hand these watermelons and we were struggling so much because it was in Brazil and it was so hot. So D'Angelo is cramping, and we feel like we had the pyramid.
[01:53:17] Speaker A: Right.
[01:53:18] Speaker E: It's the numbers. Yeah. It's not perfect looking, but we have ten, nine, eight. And that's what it said we had to do. And they kept saying, no, it wasn't good enough. So we were losing our mind because, no, this is literally what you want us to do. But we're not professional watermelon stackers. It's not going to look perfect.
And then they actually ended up passing us. But it took us like four and a half, 5 hours to do it. It was terrible. We thought we were going home.
[01:53:43] Speaker C: So in that episode, was there a lot of bleeps?
[01:53:47] Speaker E: Well, they just didn't show those, but, yeah, there's a lot of me yelling at Z because he's cramping and I'm having to do it myself.
So he was very frustrated and he was ready to quit, but he knew I wasn't going to, so he wasn't going to. And we thought we were going home, though.
[01:54:02] Speaker C: Yeah, he's probably sitting there. I can't believe you talked to me into the.
[01:54:05] Speaker E: And I will give a little backstory of something that happened afterwards that didn't make air and stuff, but we were in the hotel, so usually afterwards you're in a hotel for 25 to 36 hours before you go to the next location. Well, we have a knock on our door, and it was our cameramen. They left a watermelon at our door, and we're waiting around the corner to see us answer it.
They were just giving a little joke on us, but it was funny.
[01:54:31] Speaker C: But go Gallagher on it and just smash it.
[01:54:33] Speaker E: I haven't had watermelon since. That's a legit thing. I have not had a watermelon since.
[01:54:38] Speaker C: Oh, goodness. Wow.
No, that's great stuff.
Good stories. It seems like it's been pretty eventful since you retired with those things. But besides, just what is going on in your life and things, what about charities and things like that? I know you mentioned a nonprofit earlier. Tell us about your nonprofit.
[01:55:01] Speaker E: Yeah, so I have a nonprofit. It's called American football without barriers, or AFWB, in which we go overseas, do free football camps for kids, visit schools, orphanages, hospitals, and just give back overseas. Because what people don't understand, there's so many people that love American football that aren't in the like, and you'd be surprised at how big it is. And I'm not talking about just like I'm talking about in Brazil. I'm talking about in Finland, Germany, China, all these other places that don't get the love that the NFL gives to London and Germany obviously was one they just recently. But there's so many countries that have it. Finland, for example, they have a football hall of Fame for their own football in, like, that's how big that sport is there as well. And that's what we want to give these kids opportunity to play a sport. They get to watch, and they enjoy watching, and they actually play. They have leagues over there. So we partner with the leagues and we do free football camps. We bring ten to 15 NFL players over, and then we do a two day camp. We do four camps over two days. And then we also visit schools to give back, visit orphanages and just spend time. And then we also sightsee. So it's also like a trip for the guys as well, to give back, but also learn about the other cultures of the countries and see what it all has offered. Because I don't think enough people truly understand the beauty that's out in the world other than just the United States. There's so many beautiful places outside the United States that we're seeing. And then if we can help people at the same, like, why? And that's where it all comes from. We do camps in the US as well. We do in my high school, one of the other founder Berno Giacmini's high school in Massachusetts, and then we do one in Louisville, where we both went to.
But, like, it is all about just giving back and giving the opportunities we eventually want to get kids a chance to get looked at and get recruited Internet by colleges, because colleges don't recruit internationally. So if we can get an opportunity to get a chance to get looked at by a college and play football in the United States, because it's a dream. Why not? And that's what we're trying to do, and it's all free. We don't charge them a cent, and everything's free and just come out and have fun. And that's what it's all about. We've had nine successful camps, so.
[01:57:17] Speaker C: And you talk about the international and recruiting and things like that. We've seen how international players have changed the.
I mean, I can't imagine what bringing great players from overseas would do for the NFL.
[01:57:31] Speaker B: Yeah. Major League Baseball as well.
[01:57:34] Speaker C: True. Yeah.
[01:57:34] Speaker B: The NFL is kind of a standalone in that, so. No, that's awesome.
I was actually just getting ready to ask, do you envision a time where we're going to know seeing recruiting for international players.
[01:57:45] Speaker E: I hope so. In college. I know the NFL has their international program where they put prolayers on the practice squad and some of them have been successful. But colleges, it's obviously super expensive for them to go recruit internationally. So I think finding other avenues to help get those kids and that's why if we're able to get kids and bring them over. So we actually brought our very first camp we did in China, we brought two kids over. They went to DeAngelo Williams's football camp that he did in Memphis and one was offered a D two scholarship.
[01:58:14] Speaker B: Oh, wow.
[01:58:14] Speaker E: Now he turned it down because he's like, I'm going to go to Stanford for schooling. So, okay. But at least he got the opportunity. If he wanted to play football, he could have done that. He would have never got that opportunity without AFWB. And then there was a kid from Egypt, a tied in that he was offered preferred walk on status at UAB. But he's a kid from Egypt that doesn't have the money to come and get there and do the preferred walk on, so he couldn't do it. So like finding those. This kid, at least he was given the opportunity if he was able to do it. Next step is trying to find an opportunity where we can find funding to provide these kids. If they get preferred walk on slice, they at least get the opportunity to come over here and try and see if it works for them.
[01:58:56] Speaker C: Yeah. Hell yeah. That would be R1.
[01:59:00] Speaker B: Quick follow up. Do you have any insight or just thoughts around the NFL's love affair with London?
Why they haven't kind of branched out more than they have?
[01:59:11] Speaker E: Because there's just a lot of people, I would say. I think it's an easier market to hit into, but honestly, it's probably not even the biggest market. Brazil has 30 some OD teams that play in Brazil. They play football. And that's just one organization. There's multiple organizations. Finland's huge, Germany is huge. And they just went and did the Germany game. Germany is probably bigger than London and fandom, but it's not as many people. And I think that's the thing. It's all about hitting more people than hitting the diehards because I think a team in Germany would be better than a team in London because I think they're so diehard. They're going to be like the Philly style fans and even the Brown fans, they're going to be out every game no matter what happens. They're going to be there because they love the game of football. And one thing we did with AFWB that I haven't seen is we actually do women's camps because there's a bunch of women that play actual tackle football and like flag football in these countries and we do the actual women's camps as well to give them an opportunity. Finland, there was literally a girl, she's a female Westwalker. That's all I could have imagined. She's out there breaking off. All of these people dominate, but, and they hitting in pads and everything because if they play in pads, we do a padded camp so we can actually teach them the proper way to tackle because that's the thing is we want to make sure they learn everything the proper way versus here's how it is. And then they go do it a different way because they weren't taught how to tackle. So we want to teach them the proper way of doing everything.
[02:00:41] Speaker B: It's awesome.
[02:00:42] Speaker C: That is awesome. And so is there a website that you have if anybody wants more information or would like to?
[02:00:48] Speaker E: Yeah, afwbcamps.com.
[02:00:51] Speaker C: Awesome. We'll make sure we put that at the bottom of the screen in post production here. So real quick, though, all of that is great stuff. It's great things that you do for the game of football to grow it and really bring that to people overseas and help bring them here even and kind of connect everything. But I do want to kind of go back to the time that we get to share on the open ocean in March of 2024 and a couple of amazing stops along the way. So let's talk about some of the things that everyone should look forward to on this fan cruise. On the Cleveland Browns fan Cruise. Is there an event or activity on this cruise that you're looking forward to the most?
[02:01:30] Speaker E: Yeah, honestly, probably the Little beach party. I know there's a beach party going to go on and we're going to all go hang out and do stuff. I don't really know what all games that entails or what else all going to be included, but I think that's going to be fun because I'm sure some people are going to want to throw the football and all that kind of stuff, but I think it's going to be some other type of games as well. And then you'll get an opportunity to possibly beat us in something. There might be a horse competition or pig or there may be a shuffle board or a ping pong, and then you can say, you beat one of us. Now we're not going to go down easy, I promise you, because we're all competitive. We don't like to lose. So I think it's still going to be fun, but I think just the interacting aspect of you're going to get with every one of the players, you're going to actually see their competitiveness come out. When it comes to competitions. I don't like losing in trivia either. I know there's going to be a bunch of trivia, and I'm all about trivia.
[02:02:24] Speaker C: Yeah, that is going to be a great time. The beach parties are one of the things that I'm looking forward to. Most the events, like you said, they've been kept under tight cover. So far. Nobody really knows yet what's going on. We're going to find out. Yeah, TBD. But I do know they have some great things planned. I also know there's a competition for the Browns Backers organizations out there. Basically what it is, is the chapter with the most bookings will get an all expenses paid balcony cabin for two on the Browns fan cruise. The chapter with the highest members to bookings ratio also gets an all expenses paid Ocean view cabin for two. All members of the winning chapter will receive a specialty dining pass for two guests, and all members of the winning chapter will receive a Browns fan cruise commemorative Cleveland Browns autographed football. And so with that being said and knowing there's a competition for Brownsbackers specifically, do you have anything that you want to say to Brownsbackers across the nation and across the world, even?
[02:03:20] Speaker E: Yeah, I would say thank you for your support because I've been multiple places overseas and they have had huge supports of the Browns there. I've seen them everywhere and I would say that's a huge asset. Thank you for all that. And I know how competitive we are as players. I'm sure Browns backers, their chapters are super competitive as well. Don't let another chapter beat you out because you're never going to hear it down because they're always going to be the person that their chapter was, the most diehard fan over, the other ones that don't achieve the rewards and the most people coming. So you don't want to be your Brownsbackers group doesn't want to be the one that gets left out on that?
[02:03:59] Speaker C: No, absolutely not.
Kenny, did you have any last second?
[02:04:03] Speaker B: No. I know we're running a little bit long here. We really appreciate the time you spent with us, Gary, but I did have one final question, which is just around this Browns team this year, I know, we've been a little bit up, a little bit down.
Are they meeting your expectations? Do you have thoughts around the rest of the season for this team?
[02:04:20] Speaker E: Honestly, I would say they are probably meeting what I expected right now.
Again, Deshaun Watson hasn't played in years and he's banged up and then we just lost probably the best weapon on the team and Nick Chubb for the year. So I think it's going to be tough slutting up, but I think they have the ability because they have the players to make up for that and I think they can do it. They're going to have to rely on their defense more than their offense, I think. And Deshaun Watson's just got to, he's got to produce more than what we expected from when he came from Houston and he hasn't lived up to that yet. But again, I see it as he had a full year and a half whatever off and then he only got to play half the year last year. So basically two years off. So it's going to be a lot of rust coming back. So I think once he gets back on track, if he can get back to the Houston Texan days when he was playing that well, I think we'll have no problems there.
[02:05:12] Speaker B: Do you think there's a playoff run in this team or you think they fell just short this year?
[02:05:16] Speaker E: I think this year is going to be tough without depends. The defense can win games single handedly, so I think without Chubb it makes it a lot harder. I think they could be on the verge and they're going to need some help from other teams, but I think they definitely can be on the verge. I think if they had Nick Chubb, they definitely would have been in the playoffs.
[02:05:37] Speaker C: Yeah.
[02:05:38] Speaker B: For.
[02:05:38] Speaker C: Yeah, unfortunately, I probably agree with you there.
[02:05:42] Speaker B: Sorry, I know I keep saying. One more question, final question for me. I know you mentioned that you have your own podcast there. I should know if you wanted to throw a quick plug in just around what you have going on with that.
[02:05:51] Speaker C: Yeah.
[02:05:51] Speaker E: So me and DeAngelo Williams have a podcast called Cinnamon and Sugar.
I'll give you the backstory.
[02:05:57] Speaker C: Love the name.
[02:05:58] Speaker E: Yeah, I'll give you the backstory of it, too, where we literally just talk about any and everything. We talk about football, we talk about daily life, we just talk about any topic we want to talk about, we talk about. So it's not just sports because we want to show a different side of us than just sports because we have a lot of other Interests, a lot of other things we like to do. And there's more to us than just sports. So we talk about literally daily girth. We may talk about whatever DeAngelo had to deal with his kids, and then he'll ask me for a parent advice. I don't have kids, but still, I've seen it, so it's all good fun. We have a good time with it. But yeah, Cinnamon Sugar is the name. It's on Spotify. It's on Apple Music. It's on YouTube. Our YouTube is CNS Network, which is Cinnamon Sugar Network. You can go there, see all the videos and stuff like that. But yeah, the cinnamon sugar is obviously, it's a little play on black and white, but it's also cinnamon. Everybody knows the Cinnamon Challenge. You can't eat a handful or a spoonful of cinnamon because it's too much, but you can eat a spoonful of sugar. Well, that's how we are. People can only handle D'Angelo and spurts, but they can handle me all day. So it plays on who we are as well as people. So everything works out and we mesh well together. And it's another version of Cinnamon. And Sugar together are amazing. You get cinnamon rolls. Those are amazing.
And me and Dee together makes great.
[02:07:21] Speaker C: We're for sure. Burning River Sportscast is definitely going to subscribe to that because that sounds amazing.
But no, we really appreciate your time, Gary. It's been awesome.
[02:07:31] Speaker E: Can I say one more?
[02:07:32] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, go ahead.
[02:07:35] Speaker E: For anybody out there that actually, I'll ask both. You first. Do either one of y'all believe in ghosts?
[02:07:41] Speaker C: Sure. My wife always gives me shit because I don't believe in ghosts, but go.
[02:07:47] Speaker E: All right, so one thing me and DeAngelo are also doing, we have a thing on our YouTube. It's called Skeptic.com. It's skeptic on YouTube.
We do ghost investigation stuff. I do not believe in ghosts at all. I don't believe in any Sasquatch. None of that stuff. They all do believe, and they're trying to make me a believer. So we go and do these little investigation type things to find out if it is, and then I try to debunk what's going on, if I can. And we've released one episode already, and it was an hour and a half long investigation. We did a place in Tennessee, and then we have some more coming this year where we actually went to Waverly in Louisville, and I'm working on trying to do Mansfield Reformatory, which I went to when I was in Ohio. When I played there, we spent the night there and did a whole thing there, but we're trying to do an investigation.
[02:08:40] Speaker B: Appropriate. That's a perfect place to try it out.
[02:08:41] Speaker C: Yeah. If you do Mansfield, let us know.
[02:08:43] Speaker B: Yeah, we'll be.
[02:08:44] Speaker C: We could tag along, and they could try and make me a believer, too, because I'm right there with you. Yeah.
[02:08:49] Speaker E: I don't believe in any of it. I think a lot of it's fear based, but it's all fun, it's all good time, and if something makes me a believer, then I love it. But if not.
[02:08:58] Speaker C: Sounds like nothing convinced you in the first episode.
[02:09:00] Speaker E: Use it to watch this thing. Can't tell you.
[02:09:04] Speaker C: All right, well, like I said, gary, we got to save some of these stories for the fan cruise because we will be doing some more interviews there. But we really appreciate your time. It's been awesome, and we will talk to you soon here.
[02:09:16] Speaker E: Thank you. And I hope to see everybody on the cruise. It'll be a blast. Come have fun with all of us and get all your questions answered.
[02:09:23] Speaker C: All right. Take care.
[02:09:37] Speaker E: I'm Gary Barnage, and you're listening to Burning River Sportscast. Go Browns.
[02:09:57] Speaker C: Dude. What a life. Gary lives, man.
[02:09:59] Speaker B: BPG, baby.
[02:10:01] Speaker C: BPG. BPG. Big play, Gary. See that?
[02:10:05] Speaker B: That's what I said.
[02:10:06] Speaker C: That's what I said. You said.
[02:10:07] Speaker B: Well, I don't understand.
[02:10:08] Speaker C: There's a question mark. It's like when you accidentally type a question mark into the teleprompter. That's what happened to me. Something just happened to my brain.
[02:10:14] Speaker B: Big plague here, man.
[02:10:15] Speaker C: Look, this is just a small sample of the stories that you'll be able to hear if you go on the Browns fan cruise and get to hang out with these guys. On deck. On deck.
Look, you'll get to hear about the Amazing Race. You'll get to hear about his podcast and going to supposedly haunted places. I'm with him, though. There's no such thing as ghosts.
[02:10:36] Speaker B: There might be.
[02:10:36] Speaker C: There's not.
[02:10:37] Speaker B: There might be.
[02:10:37] Speaker C: Nah. But, yeah, I mean, it's going to be a good time. So if you want to talk to Gary and kind of learn more about what they've got going on, then make sure you're on that fan again.
[02:10:47] Speaker B: I'll say this whole interview series with the alumni has been mind blowing. Some of the stories, some of the different paths that each of these guys has taken to get to the NFL.
Inspiring, just motivational, just absolutely mind blowing, mind numbing stuff. And you never know what you're going to get. So I'd like Ryan said, get your tickets get on this cruise, not like anything you're ever going to experience in your life because this is going to be one special event.
[02:11:14] Speaker C: It's going to be dope as hell.
[02:11:15] Speaker B: Dope as hell.
[02:11:17] Speaker C: So that'll take us to the week ten preview.
We mentioned it already multiple times in the show this week. We have round two of the season with the Baltimore Ravens in Baltimore this time. Kenny, you got anything you'd like to talk about before I jump into this thing?
[02:11:46] Speaker B: Yeah, I would just say this Baltimore team is playing really well right now, and no surprise, they're seven and two.
You know all the names. We play them twice a year, every year.
You got hardball there. Who's been consistently excellent hardballs? Yeah, hardball.
Great. Now you broke my brain.
But I think we've talked a lot about our defense this year and how good they have been. I don't want to sleep on Baltimore's defense because they are ranked number one in opponent points per game. They're ranked number one in opponent points per play and yards per play and opponent touchdowns per play and red zone scoring. So this defense, it's formidable and they've played really well. It was late. They've gotten really healthy. We'll talk about the injury report here in a moment, but they have gone the other way that a lot of teams have. So with this team getting healthy and everybody kind of meshing at the right time here in the middle of the season, it's a tough matchup. I think we had very clouded view of what this matchup should be during the first meeting because that was the week that Deshaun's shoulder fell off and nobody knew it. And he practiced all week but didn't show up at the game. And then DTR was starting.
[02:13:04] Speaker C: Basically everything bad that could have happened happened in the game.
[02:13:07] Speaker B: Yeah. So we had a really kind of muffled view of what this matchup should be with the Sean back this week, and you're kind of playing strength for strength.
Our good quarterback versus their defense, their quarterback against our defense. These are both going to be matchups to watch certainly throughout the game. But I just think that this is the first time all year that they've really been healthy as a unit, which is a little scary.
[02:13:32] Speaker C: Yeah, you mentioned each quarterback versus the other defense. So perfect segue. First matchup that I have highlighted here, the Browns front seven specifically versus Lamar Jackson.
And so I highlighted this matchup because the Browns front seven has been solid. The Ravens offense overall has been solid, but that front seven is going to need to contain Lamar, as far as making plays with his legs, and we're going to need to force him to throw the ball. And I know that he's been better at it this year than a lot of years past, but here's the deal. Our DVs are pretty darn good, and I like their chances against him throwing the ball. If we force him to throw the ball, we can't let Lamar beat you by himself, and especially with his legs. And so I think that it's going to be something that you need to keep a close eye on is if this front seven is able to keep him from running all over the place.
And then my next matchup I had was Deshaun Watson versus the Ravens defense.
And basically all the same things you said. I said, don't sleep on the Ravens defense. Everyone talks about the Browns defense, but I know you mentioned several things, that they're ranked number one, and overall, the Browns are the number one defense in the NFL, and the Ravens are the number two defense right behind Cleveland. So Deshaun Watson appears to be taking a step forward as far as this last game and even the game before that when he was healthy like before the injury happened. But can he do it against a good defense? We've seen small steps. We need him to take that really big step in order for us to start kind of staking a claim as the top or one of the top teams in the division. So we got to keep an eye on him and see if Deshaun's able to take that big step forward or not.
But overall here as a team, the Ravens have a seven and two record, like you mentioned coming off a blowout win against the team that we lost to the previous week, the Seattle Seahawks. This team is a very good football team. They seem to have a pretty complete team, and they aren't just beating teams, they're beating a lot of teams in routes, and the Browns were actually included in that. Although, as you said, it doesn't tell the full story of the two teams. They did beat the Browns 28 to three earlier this season.
In order to win, I think the Browns need to start fast and finish strong, as Stefanski likes to say. He said it again in his post game locker room speech this past week, but I think that's really the case here. I think that's what you have to do, because if you're off to a slow start and you spot them a few touchdowns, you're not coming back from that in this game.
And if the Browns do win this game, then the chatter surrounding the Browns is going to get a whole lot louder, and all of a sudden the Browns will be right there atop the division, but everybody's going to be talking about what could be in this whole second half of the season. The expectations are going to be through the roof.
[02:16:28] Speaker B: We know how the Browns play with expectations.
[02:16:30] Speaker C: You just shut your stupid mouth. Just shut it. Filthy bastard. Wow, I just hate you sometimes.
[02:16:37] Speaker B: Look, I'm right with you. I would love to see nothing more than that. I just think they have to play close to a perfect game, I think, to beat these guys.
Look, I'm looking forward to it. I think, like I said, strength for strength here and we're going to see are we as good as we thought we were or are they who we thought they were?
[02:16:58] Speaker C: They are who we thought they were. Either way, that takes us to the injury report.
[02:17:20] Speaker B: So Kevin Seymour, questionable said that he is day to day after an MRI revealed no serious injury to his shoulder coming out of this weekend's game. So he's the only one with this question. We'll have got just a few guys sitting on the injury report on the IR, but honestly, this team is as healthy as it's been all year. If I look on the offensive injury or on the offensive depths chart right now, you got JK Dobbins on IR and third string right tackle, right guard out, and then Morgan Moses is out right now as well. But outside of that, they are clean on the offensive side of the ball.
Have a couple of injuries on the defense. The number one is David Ajabo there as an inside linebacker, but they do have Judavion Clowney starting there in his place right now. So that'll be another fun matchup to watch for sure. But outside of that, the only other starter that is in jeopardy right now for them is Marcus Williams at free safety. Outside of that, this team is really clean for the Browns. Jed Wills obviously is the big injury that came out of this game.
Like Ronnie mentioned earlier, that we should be looking at close to six weeks or more.
No serious damage done, but it's certainly not a small injury as well. So it's one that's going to keep them sidelined for a while.
And we have read all over our depth chart because you got Deshaun Watson's shoulder still. Jerome Ford still has the high low ankle sprain. Kareem Hunt's always questionable because he's backwards low high ankle, the low high ankle sprain. Marquise Goodwin's list is questionable and then the line, fortunately, has been getting healthier. Although Dawan Jones did go down for some time on Sunday, but I think he came back in the game. So hopefully nothing serious there.
But that will put James Hudson in likely at left tackle for this week's matchup. On the defense, pretty clean on this side. Sunitake is the only one listed as questionable at this time. So outside of that we're in decent shape. So a lot of injuries on the offensive side of the ball here, but it's all stuff that we've been playing with all year long. So we expect most or all those guys to play and then on know Taki. Taki has been playing as well with he has a shoulder or a knee or something that's been banged up but should be good to go Sunday.
[02:19:54] Speaker C: Well, there you go. So before we get into the king of the north picks, let's go ahead and give our players to watch. Let's start with who'd we start with last week? You guys remember think it was bone. All right, we're going to start with me because Kenny's having technical difficulties right now.
Look, I hate to throw out the obvious here, but my player to watch is Deshaun Watson. For all the reasons that I mentioned a few minutes ago, the defenses in this game are going to do their thing. I think contrary to what our Brownsbackers friend had to say, I think this is going to be a low scoring game and I want to see can Deshaun Watson continue to protect the ball and take that next big step for the Browns and kind of hopefully see us.
I want to see it to where he could take over a game. And even if that's not putting up 400 yards in this game, I want him to be able to say, okay, at key moments, I'm going to make plays against this stout defense that win us this game. And it's kind of on his shoulders. So I think either way it ends up we'll get our answer pretty early in this game, whether he's going to have a good one or a bad one. So yeah, Deshaun Watson is my guy to watch.
Kenny.
[02:21:12] Speaker B: I'm going to go Miles this week. Look, I know that's, again, kind of a loser pick, but I think it's down to as simple as this. Big plays or big games require big players to step up and make plays. If Miles is seriously a contender for Defensive Player of the Year, potential MVP candidate, this is the type of game he has to put himself on the map where people are going to be watching. They want to see what's going on in the AFC NorTh stages that are good and at some point you got to just step out and do it. And this is one of those weeks that Miles Garrett can truly make a name for himself as a premier talent across the entire league, not just at his position, not just on the Browns, not just in his division, across the NFL, if he can disrupt this game and leave his mark on somewhere. So I'm going Miles Garrett, I like it.
[02:22:00] Speaker C: Bone man, who you got?
[02:22:02] Speaker D: I'm going to go defense as well and I'm going to go with somebody.
He's had a great year. I think. I feel like he's thickened up this year. He's always around the ball, he's fast. And I think maybe he'll play a pivotal role in controlling Lamar this week. I feel like in the past they've talked about him being a spy or whatever it is. I don't know the scheme that Schwartz has for him, but I think he's going to come up big and containing Lamar this week.
[02:22:31] Speaker C: You mentioned it and I can't talk about this enough. Jim Schwartz getting the most out of all his defense of players. Miles Garrett, that you just talked about. One of the best years of his career so far. We talked about earlier in the show, Denzel Ward, one of the best years of his career. J-O-K. Best year of his career. I mean, you just go down the list. Grant Elpett, best year of his career. It's insane, but I digress. We'll get into the King of the North.
In case anyone doesn't know by now, you should. You haven't paid attention, but this is our year long AFC North Pickham competition. At the end of the season, whoever comes in last place gets punished in the offseason. This past year, Kenny had a gross of eggs thrown at him by fans in the Muni lot before a preseason game. And now we haven't figured out the punishment for this year yet, but we will. Guys, off top your heads. You got anything else you've been thinking?
[02:23:34] Speaker B: Flaming arrows.
[02:23:36] Speaker C: Wow.
[02:23:36] Speaker D: Ice bucket Challenge. Some type of freezing cold jumping into.
[02:23:40] Speaker C: Lake Erie in the middle of January.
[02:23:42] Speaker D: That's scary.
[02:23:44] Speaker C: He went to Ice bucket Challenge and then he completely backed away from.
[02:23:47] Speaker B: Put him in an ice bath, but lock the door on top.
Just see what happens. Just see how nature.
[02:23:53] Speaker C: This is getting good. So yeah, we'll think of what we're going to do here.
I thought Bone man was onto something. Then he got scared.
[02:24:00] Speaker D: Polar bear plunge in the Caribbean in some type of costume. I don't know.
[02:24:06] Speaker C: In the pond at my new bro.
[02:24:09] Speaker D: Yeah.
[02:24:10] Speaker B: No, not what I'm talking about.
[02:24:11] Speaker C: What?
[02:24:12] Speaker B: Ow.
[02:24:14] Speaker C: Just attacked me, bro. What?
[02:24:17] Speaker B: The punishment. I just had this idea.
[02:24:20] Speaker C: What is it?
[02:24:20] Speaker B: It needs to happen on the Browns fan cruise.
[02:24:22] Speaker C: What is it?
[02:24:23] Speaker B: I don't know, but it should happen there. That should be the venue.
[02:24:27] Speaker C: You got to dress up as left Shark and dance on stage.
[02:24:29] Speaker B: What better venue could there be for a king of the North Burner sports guest punishment than in front of a cruise full of Browns alumni and their fans?
[02:24:38] Speaker C: Oh, man. I think Bone is pretty scared now.
[02:24:42] Speaker D: You have to sing a rendition of the Greatest showman in front of everybody.
[02:24:46] Speaker B: Oh, that's happening. Anyway.
[02:24:48] Speaker C: All right. I don't know. We'll figure it out. We'll get back to you guys, but let's get into it. First things first, I want to remind everybody that I am still the reigning, defended, defending, not defended the reigning, defending, undefeated, undisputed King of the North.
Yeah, that's right. How's that feel?
[02:25:07] Speaker D: You like it when it doesn't feel good?
[02:25:09] Speaker C: Bon, you don't have to be upset. You didn't just. You joined us for the punishment, but you didn't lose last year.
But we did return to some normalcy a little bit this week.
[02:25:20] Speaker B: Zach helped carry out the punishment. He was like one of the Romans.
He was just there.
[02:25:28] Speaker C: But we did return to normalcy a little bit this week because Kenny had a really bad week.
[02:25:33] Speaker B: Oh, thank you.
[02:25:34] Speaker C: And once again, he's where he belongs. He's in the basement of the standings.
Also, in case anyone hasn't been following along, we did add, as we just mentioned, our trusty Bordeaux, Bone man, to the competition this year, and he is currently tied with me for first place.
So real quick, before we make our picks, remind everybody of what the current records are. Bone man and I stand at 14 and 14 and Kenny bringing up the rear. Twelve and 16.
[02:26:01] Speaker B: Yes.
[02:26:02] Speaker C: How's it feel?
That's how. All right, so let's go ahead and get into this week's matchups. We'll start with the Steelers. They take on the Green Bay packers in Pittsburgh.
I'll start. I'm going to go ahead and take the Steelers on this because I've picked against them too many times.
[02:26:18] Speaker B: I think the Steelers might be good. I'm going Steelers.
[02:26:20] Speaker A: I don't know.
[02:26:21] Speaker B: I don't know what else to do at this point.
[02:26:22] Speaker C: I'm not picking them because they're good. I'm just picking them because I picked against them too many times.
[02:26:25] Speaker B: I think Green Bay is in a heap of trouble because they just are all over the place.
[02:26:29] Speaker C: No, it's funny. We went from beginning of season, everybody talking about how Jordan loves the guy.
[02:26:33] Speaker D: He's not very good.
[02:26:34] Speaker B: He may not be the guy.
[02:26:35] Speaker C: You don't hear that anymore. You got the Steelers, we guess bone man, who you get?
[02:26:39] Speaker D: Yeah, I'm picking the Steelers. I don't think Jordan Lowe's very good. And I think, yeah, Pittsburgh defense is really good, so that's that combination, especially.
[02:26:47] Speaker C: With Cam Hayward back. Next up, we got Cincinnati hosting the Texans. Bone man, who you got? Whoa. Yeah, I came right back to you. How you like that zipper? How do you like them apples?
[02:26:57] Speaker D: I'm going to go Cincinnati. Cincinnati at home. They're rolling.
Yeah, I don't see them being the Texans. All right. See them beating.
[02:27:06] Speaker C: I was going to say you're picking the wrong team then, Kenny, who you got?
[02:27:10] Speaker B: I learned my lesson last week. Cincinnati protects home field in this tight ass division.
They beat the Texans, but I do think it'll be close because I'm a little scared of CJ Stroud.
[02:27:22] Speaker C: I'm going against you guys. Somewhat of a homecoming game for CJ Stroud, as he did play just up north at Ohio State.
And I think he has another big game here. What's the weakness of the Cincinnati Bengals past defense? Defense isn't very good.
They're not terrible, but they're not that good.
[02:27:42] Speaker B: Kryptonite, I think you make a good.
[02:27:44] Speaker D: Point with him kind of coming home.
[02:27:46] Speaker C: I think he's going to have a lot of family there, probably a lot of friends there. And I like CJ Stroud to show out again. And I've got the Texans in this one, so this could make or break this week for all of us.
And then next up, we got the Cleveland Browns. Obviously, they're traveling to Baltimore to take on the Ravens. Kenny, who do you got?
You've been way too Cleveland optimistic this year. I need you to pick against us.
[02:28:14] Speaker B: Yeah, you're probably right.
I think as good as the Browns can play just may not be good enough this Sunday in Baltimore.
I think it'll actually be a higher scoring affair. So I'm going to go 33 30, Baltimore.
[02:28:37] Speaker C: Whoa. That's high scoring.
[02:28:39] Speaker B: I think it'll come down to Justin Tucker Hopkins final kick, whoever has the ball last.
[02:28:44] Speaker C: Nice bone. Who you got?
[02:28:47] Speaker D: I'm going Cleveland.
[02:28:48] Speaker C: Hell, yes.
[02:28:51] Speaker E: Yeah.
[02:28:51] Speaker D: I believe it's going to be a tight game, and I think it'll come down to the kickers. So I'm going to go. Cleveland 26, Baltimore 23.
[02:28:59] Speaker C: Damn, and I also have Cleveland in this game. I think it is going to be a very tight game. But as our friend from the Brownsbackers of Baltimore City pointed out, the Browns actually tend to play pretty well in Baltimore.
And I like us winning on a last second field goal from Dustin Hopkins. 17 to 16, baby.
So everybody needs to get excited. But before you get excited, why don't you go ahead and call the Burning river sports guest hot take hotline.
Don't forget to call and leave your hot takes on the hot take hotline. Remember, these are hot takes. We want hot takes. We want hot takes.
[02:29:36] Speaker B: We want hot takes.
[02:29:37] Speaker C: We want hot takes. 330-227-8080 JUmp the Gun 3302-2780-8033-0227-8 Call now. Operators are never.
[02:29:50] Speaker B: They're never standing by.
[02:29:52] Speaker D: They're not there.
[02:29:52] Speaker C: No. But we'll put you on air and be sure to check out our gear at WW dot dtappinmedia.com shop and that'll do it for us. So, Kenny, what can we expect next week?
[02:30:03] Speaker B: Well, we're going to obviously break down this important division matchup with the Ravens, hopefully celebrating a big, big divisional win. Previewing the next week's week eleven matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Interview, obviously with another BrownS Backers chapter. And we're actually going to have a local Browns Backers chapter on this week. The Kent Browns Backers. Good folks over there. I've done a couple of things with those guys. And an interview with another Browns alumni who will be joining us on the Browns fan Cruise in March of 2024. And his name is Ben Davis. Ben Davis.
[02:30:40] Speaker C: Remember we switched him and Gary Barnage. You got Gary Barnage a week early, but you get in Ben Davis a week late. You win some, you lose some.
[02:30:46] Speaker B: You win some, you lose them.
[02:30:47] Speaker C: Don't forget to check us out on social media. Tapping media is on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, at the Tap and media and Burning River Sportscast. That's this podcast is on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube at Burning River Sportscast and on X at Burning River Podcast. You can find our podcast wherever you get your podcasts. I'm talking Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Amazon Music, Stitcher, Pandora, iHeartRadio podcasts, good Pods, Castro and so many more.
[02:31:08] Speaker B: So close.
[02:31:09] Speaker C: So close. Do you know that takes us to Kennedy?
[02:31:12] Speaker E: Thanks for days.
[02:31:37] Speaker C: What do you got for me today, Kenny?
[02:31:39] Speaker B: Oh, say that again.
[02:31:40] Speaker C: What do you got for me today, Kenny?
[02:31:42] Speaker B: I have some facts for days.
[02:31:44] Speaker C: What are your facts for days?
[02:31:46] Speaker B: The first one is that ketchup leaves the bottle at a measured speed.
[02:31:54] Speaker C: What is that? Measured speed?
[02:31:55] Speaker B: It leaves the bottle at a rate of 25 miles per year.
[02:32:01] Speaker C: Per year?
[02:32:02] Speaker B: Yeah. Comes out to.
[02:32:04] Speaker C: Man, that's actually pretty slow. I would have thought it was faster.
[02:32:07] Speaker B: There's not a lot of it. It's a small bottle.
[02:32:10] Speaker D: Does it depend on who's squeezing it and how strong their hands are?
[02:32:13] Speaker C: I don't really understand this.
[02:32:17] Speaker B: How do you not understand that's the rate at which it leaves instead of per mile per hour is miles per year.
[02:32:23] Speaker C: That'd be really slow, though.
[02:32:25] Speaker B: It comes out slow. Have you seen the viscosity of ketchup?
[02:32:28] Speaker C: Wait, you're talking about not a squeeze bottle. You got to be talking about, like, Heinz 57.
[02:32:35] Speaker D: The glass bottle.
[02:32:36] Speaker C: The glass bottles. You shake it out. That makes sense. Now I get it. That's slow ass.
[02:32:42] Speaker D: Those bottles are the worst.
[02:32:43] Speaker C: No wonder they were repping the Steelers for so long.
[02:32:47] Speaker B: Yeah, for sure. Number two, you would think if you were lost somewhere, what do your essentials become if you're lost on a desert island?
[02:32:59] Speaker C: Rope. Okay, well, before that, water, shelter, and you probably need food.
[02:33:09] Speaker B: What do you do if you catch the food?
[02:33:11] Speaker C: Well, you got to kill it. That's where that knife comes in that Zach was talking about.
[02:33:14] Speaker B: And then what are you going to do with it? You just got to eat a cat raw.
[02:33:16] Speaker E: Fire.
[02:33:17] Speaker B: Fire. Fire is important, right? So you're thinking if you were needing.
[02:33:21] Speaker C: Fire also gives away your position. So what situation are we in here?
[02:33:25] Speaker B: You have to have a fire if you're watching naked, afraid. That's the first thing they do.
[02:33:28] Speaker C: Yeah, but what if we were in hostile environment? Somebody was trying to kill me.
[02:33:31] Speaker B: They're not.
[02:33:31] Speaker C: Okay, well, you didn't stipulate that before. All right, go on. I understand. Now, look, this is the fact, okay?
[02:33:38] Speaker B: You ruined the whole thing. I'm just going to tell you the fact. The match was invented before. It was after the lighter. The first match was made in 1826. However, the first cigarette lighter was made in 1823.
[02:33:48] Speaker C: Why?
[02:33:49] Speaker B: Doesn't seem like it makes any sense, right? You would think a pocketbook of matches is like way old technology.
If you were DB Cooper, you'd just have a pocketbook of matches. But no, you'd have a lighter.
[02:34:01] Speaker C: Yeah. Why do they do that backwards?
[02:34:02] Speaker B: I don't know. Why would you like, after you had the lighter, why would you have a book of matches?
[02:34:05] Speaker C: I don't know. We keep in our hiking bag, though, waterproof matches, and they're dope as hell. And they scratch on like anything.
[02:34:11] Speaker B: You should just keep a waterproof letter.
[02:34:13] Speaker C: I could, but that would be better. They're smaller. Well, I guess they're the same. I digress. Go on.
[02:34:18] Speaker B: You can put a waterproof letter up your bone.
[02:34:21] Speaker C: That's weird. But I'm really starting to question why matches exist now.
[02:34:25] Speaker B: Right.
[02:34:26] Speaker C: Go on.
[02:34:26] Speaker B: Number three.
[02:34:27] Speaker C: Number three.
[02:34:28] Speaker B: An organism with a disappearing butt exists.
[02:34:31] Speaker C: With a what?
[02:34:31] Speaker B: A disappearing butt.
[02:34:34] Speaker D: Where does it go?
[02:34:35] Speaker B: A disappearing butt.
[02:34:36] Speaker C: Yeah, but where does it go?
[02:34:39] Speaker B: So science is named.
[02:34:40] Speaker C: No.
[02:34:43] Speaker B: The comb jelly or the sea walnut.
[02:34:46] Speaker C: Those are two completely different things. How is it called both in order?
What do you call it? The comb wallet or the sea jelly.
[02:34:55] Speaker B: Look, I'm just going to go ahead and assume.
I'm just going to go ahead and assume. You haven't heard the term transient anus before.
[02:35:04] Speaker C: No, that's exactly what we're dealing with here.
[02:35:07] Speaker B: This phrase was coined to describe an anus that appears only when it is needed for pooping. Vanishing as soon as the deed is done. The proud unowner we talked about is the wart comb jelly or the sea walnut.
[02:35:19] Speaker C: I got them backwards.
[02:35:20] Speaker B: Is a jellyfish like creature native to the western Atlantic. They are believed to be about 500 million years old. And scientists actually believe that their fleeting buttholes mark an evolutionary stepping stone towards permanent features supported by more modern organisms. So they think this.
[02:35:38] Speaker C: We're going to have disappearing bowls.
[02:35:40] Speaker B: Everybody's going to have disappearing bowls soon.
[02:35:42] Speaker C: I want one.
[02:35:43] Speaker B: It's incredible, right?
[02:35:45] Speaker C: What a good party.
[02:35:47] Speaker B: So this Sydney dam, who discovered this, this transient anus was a leader of a research group in Massachusetts. And they were looking for this anus under a microscope and noticed they couldn't see one.
And then studied it for years and years and years. And then they did determine that it does have a through gut, which means it has a hole. Food comes in and that poop did come out. Not the same hole, but it's interesting because there are jellyfish and sponges which endure the unfortunate situation of having to use the same hole for eating annex.
[02:36:26] Speaker C: I don't want that.
[02:36:27] Speaker B: But anyway, they did eventually notice, I get it, that this new anus was formed each time it needed to release waste, which turns out it's pretty frequently. Once an hour.
[02:36:37] Speaker C: That's incredible. The old disappearing butthole.
[02:36:40] Speaker B: Disappearing butthole. It could be a problem.
[02:36:42] Speaker C: I got to get one.
[02:36:43] Speaker B: Don't just be a part of the problem. Be the whole damn problem.
[02:36:46] Speaker C: And only you can prevent river fires.
[02:36:50] Speaker B: Burning river sportscast burning river burning river sportscast, burning river.
[02:36:57] Speaker C: Zach, take over. We're sick burning river sports gas.
Hell, yeah. Keep going. Keep it going, keep it going.
[02:37:06] Speaker B: Burning river sports gas.
[02:37:08] Speaker C: As many times as you can in 30 seconds. Burning Rivers sports gas. Burning Rivers porch. Burning river sports gas.
Burning river. Burning river sports gas. We're going to go on a fan cruise with the Browns. Put all my seas out of it. Fans out of it all. Bernie River Sports.
[02:37:28] Speaker B: Good night, Cleveland Browns fan Cruise and.
[02:37:32] Speaker E: The Bernie river sports cast. What better combination could you possibly think of?
[02:37:36] Speaker C: Motorboat.
[02:37:36] Speaker A: You play the motorboat.
[02:37:39] Speaker B: You motorboat son of a bitch.
[02:37:41] Speaker C: You old sailor, you.
[02:37:43] Speaker B: You know, I was thinking during that.
[02:37:44] Speaker C: Interview, what were you. Nothing. Because you don't have thoughts. Because you're a brainless idiot.
[02:37:49] Speaker B: Wow. My name is Uhtred, son of Uhtred.
[02:37:58] Speaker C: Zach helped.
[02:37:59] Speaker B: Zach helped carry out the punishment. He was like one of the Romans.
Cross.
[02:38:05] Speaker C: Yeah.
[02:38:05] Speaker B: He was just there.
[02:38:09] Speaker C: By the way, I want my foreskin back. The expectations are going to be through the roof.
[02:38:13] Speaker B: We know how the Browns play with expectations.
[02:38:15] Speaker C: You just shut your stupid mouth. Just shut it. Filthy bastard.
[02:38:20] Speaker B: Wow.
[02:38:21] Speaker C: I just hate you sometimes. The other one, the finger eating food fingers. That's 174ft. So for comparison's sake, that is less than three singles in baseball. That is only 14ft longer than the width of a football field.
That is less than running down and back on a basketball court. That is about half the length of a soccer field and less than one width of a soccer field. And that is less than the length of one hockey rink and just about.
[02:38:51] Speaker B: Twice as ties as my penis.
[02:38:53] Speaker C: Yeah, right about there.
[02:38:54] Speaker B: The weather outside is weather.
[02:38:57] Speaker C: All I do is win, win no matter what.
[02:39:00] Speaker A: What do you mean, funny?
[02:39:01] Speaker C: Funny? How am I funny? Erroneous. Erroneous on both counts. Oh, Lord.
[02:39:05] Speaker B: Wow.
[02:39:05] Speaker C: But damn.
[02:39:06] Speaker B: The leads are weak.
[02:39:08] Speaker C: Leads are weak?
[02:39:10] Speaker B: Fucking leads are weak.
[02:39:12] Speaker C: You're weak.
[02:39:12] Speaker B: I've been in this business 15 years.
[02:39:15] Speaker C: What's your name? You.
[02:39:16] Speaker A: That's my name.
[02:39:17] Speaker B: You know why, Mr. Because you drove a Hyundai to get here tonight, I Drove an $80,000 BMW.
[02:39:24] Speaker A: That's my name.
[02:39:27] Speaker E: Where's Logo girl when you need her?
[02:39:28] Speaker A: I desperately want to make love to us.
[02:39:30] Speaker B: We need cheese Girl, now.
[02:39:32] Speaker C: Oh, man.
[02:39:33] Speaker B: We need cheese girl, now. Eating. We need cheese girl, now.
[02:39:36] Speaker C: Eating that.
[02:39:37] Speaker B: We need cheese girl, now. Who's canceled now? Who's canceled now?
[02:39:41] Speaker C: Probably me.
[02:39:42] Speaker B: You making a photo of fat people?
[02:39:44] Speaker C: I'm not just you. We're a whole race, basically.
[02:39:50] Speaker B: Down Joe Sanderson.
[02:39:52] Speaker C: Down Joe Sanderson, finger banging her salad.
[02:39:59] Speaker D: You first get shocked, and then you.
[02:40:01] Speaker C: Get the shocker.
[02:40:05] Speaker B: You like to see.
[02:40:06] Speaker A: Almost naked that's cool, man.
